  2. Despite the government's denials, a cell phone kill switch, I'm sure in the case of some "domestic disturbance" cell phone use would be restricted or disabled completely by their order. After J6 if it didn't exist then I'll bet it does now. That's when you're likely to need your radio the most to coordinate with others to get out of an area to a safe place.
  3. Yeah soldering connectors on is not for everyone. One won't go wrong with a quality prebuilt coax cable. And it never hurts to coil the excess cable right below the antenna.
  4. Iy you will find that it does not transmit, join the club have 4 different radios and none of them transmit just recieve. This one is supposed to but just can't get it to yet. Repeater is not standard freqs so I am trying to figure that out. Once you get it figured out you will like it. Get a notebook and write down all the abbreviations in the radio until you know them. Happy hunting.
  5. I've tried installing my own connectors, wasn't easy, didn't turn out that well. Unless you've done a lot of it, and have the right tools, it's money well spent to just buy a cable with the connectors already installed. One less question mark if things don't work as planed.
  6. I amstill trying g to figure it out, but I have found a lot of videos on u-tube. Also type in how to mannually program UV-5G+ in the search box on goggle.
  7. Thats one reason I'm afraid to update my firmware. I have 230317 ! Works fine no matter how I program it. Bluetooth or chirp. Hits all repeaters.
  8. Why does it not let me complete my registration unless I put a ham call sign in? This is a Gmrs site. I am studying for tech.
  9. I've tried to give radios out to my family for this purpose. They come back with the cell phone argument. @OffRoaderX just made a vid about it too. My wife and kids all have one, but my extended family just plans to use their phones, despite life experience telling me that's a bad idea.
  10. If you are on the repeater listing on the main site, just click "Request Access", and it will let you type a whole message to send to them.
  11. I am new to gmrs radio and I am looking for someone who would help me program my baofeng uv-5g+.
  12. If you have TDR/dual-monitoring enabled, and line-A is on Channel 23, and line B is on channel 21, then yes.
  13. Today
  14. You can use the same one.
  15. I found their mailing address and information , but no email. I was just wondering if their was a way to message them on this site. Thanks.
  16. I've noticed Pinal had changed their tones as well. So far the only repeater that we found to work well...flawlessly in our situation at Bartlett lake was CK575. I will need to try some of the others while at the lake and see if I can get a response from any others. I didn't realize there is a waiting list or line, heck I still don't even know how to get in line... either way the wait will be worth it if there's a chance for access again. Thx

    frn number question

If I already have a current FRN number because I have a ham radio license can I use that frn number to obtain a GMRS license ? or do I need a separate FRN number?
  18. Newbie question here. For example, I am monitoring on Channel 23 and someone is transmitting on that channel but yet I hear the responding person on say channel 21. I have a dual band handheld (UV-5G plus). Is that normal?
  19. I’ll probably be playing with the grandkids on Saturday but I appreciate your offer. My friend is back in Montana. I actually feel a little guilty even asking for it. There may be others who need it more than my friend. Take it to the ham thing and trade it or sell it!
  20. If they used their call sign as their ID, or if they’ve included it in a post you can find it with a search. It’s possible that they have a sign-in for the website but not for the forum. But, if you know their call sign it is very easy to look up their name and address using the call sign lookup on the website here or in the FCC database. What’s the call sign?
  21. It is important to use the correct type and good quality coax. The cheap Amazon coax will have more loss than TM LMR400 or the Messi and Pailoni equivalent. The cheap coax won't have as much braided shielding and/or use lower quality materials which leads to more loss. Using a good antenna with at least 6dBi of gain will overcome the 1-2 dB loss from the coax. Again use quality coax and quality connectors (if making your own cables).
  22. If they are a member here you can message them by clicking on their avatar and clicking the "Message" icon.
  23. I need to contact an owner of a repeater and all I know is their Call Sign . Is there a way to do that on here?
  24. As I was referring to the "R" and "Q" model radio, those radios are Motorola radios. The Kenwood TK880 model (25 watt) band splits are: the TK880-1 is 450-490 MHz; TK880-2 is 485-512 MHz; TK880-3 is 400-430 MHz and the TK880H is the 40 watt radio with the same respective band splits. As Lscott said, you may be able to push the 70cm freq programming in the Kenwood. Since, I am not an Amateur, as in HAM radio operator, I never had a need to try that with my Kenwood.
  25. I just installed a Cobra 75 All Road in my SUV. I like it! I bought the BlueParrott B450-XT headset to go with it. I set the BlueParrott button to be the PTT for the Cobra and it works great. Audio from the Cobra using the BlueParrott mic sounds almost exactly the same as using the Cobra mic. Now I can use the Cobra without having to pick up the mic, and a big bonus is that there is no need for an external speaker. It works great.
  26. For a db or two that's true for most people. With a modest gain antenna the coax loses can be compensated for. For people on the very fringe of a coverage zone every db counts.
