  1. Past hour
  2. My radio and accessories arrive tomorrow. At 47 ft above sea level, I'm hoping to hit a repeater 21.9 miles away with my 50 watt transceiver.
  3. It is much easier on the paint than what was originally on the base, and it can be easily removed and replaced when necessary. I have been using this for many years on different vehicles for various applications, and as I stated, the vinyl is attached to the base, not the paint of the car. Alternately you could apply the film to the roof of the vehicle, which is actually what it is designed for anyway. I have some attached to the paint of a motorcycle to prevent paint damage where something rubs against it. It comes off easily. The base originally had a very thing plastic/vinyl covering, not rubber, so this isn't really different, and with a 6 inch tall antenna, it isn't moving while driving. The only time it moves is when I try to remove it.
  4. I think we've all learned a very valuable lesson here today.
  5. Click on the gear icon in the upper left of the map and enable "Show Stale Repeaters." Stale repeaters are just repeaters that haven't had an update in more than 1 year. Also, checkout some local clubs, including ham clubs. Often times GMRS repeaters are owned by hams.

  7. There are not a lot of repeaters near Clarksville TN on either MyGMRS, or Repeaterbook. Anyone in the area that knows of local ones that are not listed? My daughter is in that area and getting into GMRS. I'm trying to help her out by doing the leg work and to program her radio. Thank you in advance for any helpful comments.
  8. I do good hearing Fire&EMS, but I can't seem to get GMRS. I got in to this to look at the traffic going throw my club repeater. But when I go to our frequency both on in put and out put I do not see anything. I tried NFM and WFM. I currently using SDR++. SDR-Sharp performed the same. I can only think I'm over looking a setting some where. Any suggestions?
  9. @OffRoaderX fair enough! Made up, and clearly 100% wrong - ignore this dunce over here and keep trudging on.
  10. On the UV-5G-Plus, channel 23 is Repeater Channel #1 (aka 467/462.5500) and channel 21 is GMRS channel 21 (aka 462.700). Because the OP says he has not made any programming changes to the radio, your made-up scenario is... made up.. and therefore should be ignored.
  11. That protects the base of the mount, but isn’t effective at protecting your paint. The vinyl will still move against the car’s painted surface, maybe even easier than the rubber. Iron dust (which is everywhere because 5% of the earth’s crust is iron) will be attracted to the magnet through the vinyl and can become embedded into the vinyl where it will abrade the paint. If the vinyl is stuck to the paint then it becomes the sacrificial surface that the mount grinds against.
  12. Channel 23 is not a regular GMRS channel (within 1 through 22) - Also note - 'channel' really just represents a programmed memory in the radio, IE: memory slot 1 I'm not familiar with the uv-5g plus, but its very likely that 'channel 23' is programmed or intended to be a repeater channel, and the Recieve frequency programed into that channel (memory slot) is the same as whatever channel you are hearing the response back from.
  13. You can still register and use the site. It just doesn't say 100% until you add a ham callsign.
  14. The best part of DMR in my opinion is using a MMDVM Hotspot. Easy to use around the house and chat with anyone anywhere. PI-star software easy to configure. Reasonable to build or buy. I understand there is something similar being used on GMRS but not sure how easy it is and at what price.
  15. I used 3M clear paint surface protection vinyl film. I applied it to the base of the magnet mount, trimmed around most of the base, leaving a wide section about an inch or so long one side, then folded the tail over to make it double thickness to be used as something to grab when removing the antenna. Also keep the paint under it well waxed. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004VG8DS0?ref=nb_sb_ss_w_as-reorder_k0_1_7&amp=&crid=1ELGBGSQ87X09&amp=&sprefix=3m+clea And it looks like I need to remove and clean it and the car once the weather breaks.
  16. I just got this radio several days ago and have not done any programing.
  17. How have you got your radio programmed up?
  18. Despite the government's denials, a cell phone kill switch, I'm sure in the case of some "domestic disturbance" cell phone use would be restricted or disabled completely by their order. After J6 if it didn't exist then I'll bet it does now. That's when you're likely to need your radio the most to coordinate with others to get out of an area to a safe place.
  19. Yeah soldering connectors on is not for everyone. One won't go wrong with a quality prebuilt coax cable. And it never hurts to coil the excess cable right below the antenna.
  20. Iy you will find that it does not transmit, join the club have 4 different radios and none of them transmit just recieve. This one is supposed to but just can't get it to yet. Repeater is not standard freqs so I am trying to figure that out. Once you get it figured out you will like it. Get a notebook and write down all the abbreviations in the radio until you know them. Happy hunting.
  21. I've tried installing my own connectors, wasn't easy, didn't turn out that well. Unless you've done a lot of it, and have the right tools, it's money well spent to just buy a cable with the connectors already installed. One less question mark if things don't work as planed.
  22. I amstill trying g to figure it out, but I have found a lot of videos on u-tube. Also type in how to mannually program UV-5G+ in the search box on goggle.
  23. Thats one reason I'm afraid to update my firmware. I have 230317 ! Works fine no matter how I program it. Bluetooth or chirp. Hits all repeaters.
  24. Why does it not let me complete my registration unless I put a ham call sign in? This is a Gmrs site. I am studying for tech.
  25. I've tried to give radios out to my family for this purpose. They come back with the cell phone argument. @OffRoaderX just made a vid about it too. My wife and kids all have one, but my extended family just plans to use their phones, despite life experience telling me that's a bad idea.
  26. If you are on the repeater listing on the main site, just click "Request Access", and it will let you type a whole message to send to them.
  27. I am new to gmrs radio and I am looking for someone who would help me program my baofeng uv-5g+.
