  1. Shot in the dark running off of memory at the moment (since I'm not at the computer), so I don't have the specific names at hand... i want to say it's the "tone setting" column that allows setting for for mixed tone types... For this situation I want to say that has to be "tone -> tone" to accept tones on both tx and rx...I think if it's set to "tone -> ", it won't store the RX tone. Chirp does do a bit of trying to outthink you sometimes...

    tuning handheld antenna..

The Nagoya 771 is a dual band amateur band antenna...which judging by its length, looks like a 1/4 wave on 2 meters and 5/8 wave on 70 cm ham band. I personally would not use this antenna for GMRS. This antenna would need to see some sort of ground plane to radiate properly, in addition to properly loading for lowest reflected power. As i am a Motorola person, I am not certain about the construction of the Btech radio in regards to the case acting as a proper ground plane. If it does not have a metal chassis, or metal impregnated case, and is only relying on the SMA connector for a ground plane, I am not so certain that your goal of antenna trimming will ever be achieved reliably.

  3. You cannot measure SWR of HT antenna by simply attaching the meter between HT and antenna. The body of HT coupled with your body is a part of antenna. You need measuring apparatus inside the HT to have a meaningful measurements. Attempts to use regular SWR meter to measure SWR of HT antenna are futile. SWR numbers measured this way are meaningless and junk science (junk engineering). And on top of that, SW-33 is not to be trusted on UHF, according to my personal experience.

  5. I suppose that since I'm still getting recommendations I should update the thread. I have gotten the Kenwood software and I've programmed the UHF radio with all of our emergency frequencies and frequency pairs. I like the radio so much that I decided to also order the VHF 7170 as well for our VHF repeaters in the area and it is literally the twin of the 8180. The only difference besides the band is that I couldn't find the 30w version in the condition that I wanted so I had to spend the premium to get the 50w version. We had to go into the mountains and rescue a stranded snowmobiler this weekend who spent 24 hours stuck in a bowl full of powder he couldn't get out of and the TK-8180 performed flawlessly in maintaining comms with the county dispatch office until I arrived on scene to take the role of SAR Command at the incident where we use Motorola CDM 1250s. We are seriously considering Kenwoods now so we can do our own programming. This is being talked about even more now because another mountain search and rescue unit in the neighboring county has just switched over to NX radios.

    something happened..

You need to check, and then re-check ALL the wiring, both ground and hot. Look at every connection, even the fuse holder, and especially the ground.
