  1. yes it does help and thank you... RFB? I will need to find it.....
  2. Hans thank you for the great advice. I had no idea that there was a difference in the two. or that it was even a thing. I'll let the other guys that I have in mind to do this with me know and we will get going on something. I also need to find a place that will allow a repeater to be placed. this might be an issue as all the raised land around our valley is privately owned and locked down. the only good thing is that if i let the farmers use part of it for their family communications while they are in the fields. but i digress. organization first then we will work on getting the rest of the paperwork finished. thank you to all that have given me some pointers.
  3. Thank you for the help on that and i will look it up as soon as i am able. i am finding that these forums are chalk full of info if you take the time to read down through all the pages. there are many many pages that i am finding. helpful yes but still a daunting task when i only have an hour or so to be on the computer at one time. i multitask a lot......
  4. OK I live in a bit of a bubble. what headlines are you reffering. and thank you for the clarification on the ARRL part.
  5. Hello all, I have looked on here many times in the past year and many things have been helpful. What I am looking for and am having some trouble finding information on, is starting a club. I know that with Ham we need to have at least 4 people to start a club, is it similar to GMRS? if so where do i find the information and requirements on starting one? in the area that I live and work I have a large group that drives and is around the county a lot. the best thing is that this county sits in a large valley and GMRS works well. Thank you in advance for the help.
  6. Very nice going. I took my Tech test a week and a half ago and have not seen anything. I will be going for My General in a couple months. I want to get on the air and play around a little bit. there is a large cluster of repeaters in my area and a lot of chatter all times of the day and night. have a great time and looking forward to maybe contacting a few of you soon. 73
  7. Well i guess that I will be looking at a little bit more for a radio, I really don't want to buy a CR and have to buy one in a year that would be pointless. If I spend the money on a radio that will last i guess it would make better sense than the alternative. I am assuming that Motorola and the like are the better option? I would love an ICOM however we all know that they are also a pain on the pocket. in the long run i can see where everyone is leaning, you get what you pay for. Thank you for the input and I will be waiting to hear from the others.
  8. I found the Zastonete radio for $229 on amazon. I was also looking at the QYT KT-8900D seems to be a semi solid product for $95.00 for a decent starter radio. Would this be an item that could work. I also do not see where it is licensed for Part 95. which is partly a concern for me. Do any of you have an opinion on the QYT products?
  9. will look into it thank you,
  10. Thank you everyone for the input, yes it makes much more sense now that you have worked it out for me. I have just received my Armature Ticket and am awaiting my Call Sign. I may invest in one of these radios for that function. I will still be looking to purchase a good radio for the GMRS side of things so that I may be able to play a little with that as well. again thank you everyone this forum is always interesting and a learning experience. On a side note the radio that I want get would be under the $200 range. and at least 25w. what would you recommend?
  11. well that went fast.. I may be a little bit miss quoting. I believe that it is the DR-635T I was watching about GMRS radios on YouTube. (we all know how accurate that is) and wanted advice from those that actually use the radios. I will re watch them and get back to you... i am looking for a good radio that is reasonably inexpensive that works on both as I have just gotten my Tech Ticket. I will be back soon.
  12. What do any of you know about the Alinco DR 365T being both 2 meter ham and also being part 95/97 compliant with 85 watts? are you aware if it is legal that we use it for GMRS and HAM? I would like to pick one up but I'm starting to get tight on space in my vehicle and am looking for a good (not great) radio to install and be able to use on a local repeater. my Midland is not repeater capable. Thank you.
  13. Logan 5 I am very familiar with solar systems and battery back ups, I have built control boxes both solar and AC for Cellular networks. However I have never build the radio portion. I will be building sometime soon we will see how it works. thank you for the help.
  14. William thank you for the heads up on all of that, and thank you to everyone for the solid advice. I will take it into effect when I start my build.. If it is alright I will post updates, and ask advice as I go along with it.
  15. Hello from way out west in Oregon, Glad to see ya.
  16. Thank you, i will give them a try,
  17. I am new to this and live in rural Oregon, I am looking for a group of people that live in or around my community that I can chat with and contact once in a while for fun, and networking. Doe anyone know of a group around Salem or otherwise that I can contact and what Freq. they would be on.
  18. Pastor Gary- Thank you for the heads up on that mater. I will see to it that the rest of them get their license as well. I will only need about 5 more guys to get theirs as well. will not be a problem. as for the rest of the group it will be my kids and wife that are using it. Thank you everyone for the input.
  19. I do not believe that there is power to the site, I would have to look into a Solar unit possibly with a Battery backup. I will continue working on it for now and see what comes up in the future. As for a Mobile repeater for mobile operations in a wooded and elevated environment I was looking at putting two radios together with a generator for power and a battery back up, and again a 20' antenna height, approximately 40 watts. it will be while my group and I are running through the woods. Or running a large caravan of vehicles. We also have multiple camp outs with more that 300 people and spread out over several miles. would be nice to have radios for the events. thank you for the help Logan5.
  20. Possibly, it is private property, I'm thinking that I might be able to speak with the owner and work out a deal for our prosperous benefit. He does own a ranch, and the neighbor is a large vinyard. It overlooks the Willamette valley from McMinnville all the way to Willamina and beyond. about 60+ miles. What kind of wattage would a person need to cover that area if there was a 40 foot antenna? Or should I look at a taller one. Like i was saying I am just now getting into this and trying to understand it. There is a possibility that I could be moving out into the surrounding farm lands that would allow me to get better signal from my home. I know that a mountain top would be better. What kind of equipment would you recommend if I could get a tower on top of hill next to the house. the hill is about 200+ feet high.and jutting out from the main mountain range from here. Thank you for the help..
  21. I am still very new to GMRS, and this site as well, however I have learned much in my couple days. What i am looking for information on is 1) Doe's the new Midland Mobile Mini work with repeaters? If not what mobile do you recommend on a budget? 2) If I am wanting to set up a repeater for my area, (which there are none), do i need to license it separately or does the license that i currently have work as well. 3) I live at the bottom of a mountain and if I was wanting to set up a repeater at my home what would you recommend for me to use in order to project out into the rest of the valley? 4) I would also like to construct a mobile repeater that I can mount into my vehicle and extend the range of my HT while out in the field. I currently have (4) 5 watt HT that i use for my group while out in the field. Is there one that is an all in one unit out there again on a reasonable budget. My area is very GMRS poor for repeaters and radio signals. I would like to start alleviating that. Thank you for your time and understanding.
