  1. Hey pfactor and PB92 Thanks for the info on narrowband, I did not realize this. I did a little googling and could not find a spec sheet for the MXT400 on line, but it make since. Even though the audio is VERY clear and the signal is strong there is a reduced audio level on our end (base/repeater) and I just assumed they were not holding the mic close enough, like a cell phone on speaker. Once I was talking to my granddaughter about their cats, she got all fired up and the audio was GREAT!!! I do find that when I talk to this unit on the base I turn the volume up, but through the repeater to a HT its normal. I did also notice that ch 8-14 (467's) were left out as FRS only and I didn't see any info on Midland's web site about a new/updated version as to the 2017 regulations, like Btech did with the GMRS V1. I doesn't affect our use, but in some of the larger city's I'm sure the users would like access to those frequencies also. But sill it
  2. Yes we do and yes we do I bought a lightly used one a few weeks ago and we installed it in my son's pick-up truck, with a Browning WSPBR10353 magnet mount and a BR-176-S 450-470mhz 5/8 wave 3Dbd gain antenna. He runs on Medium power and makes a great connection with our base/repeater. It has a good clear Rx & Tx (even with our 5yr old granddaughter with the mic) and has a easy to use menu. They only use the radio for talking to our family group, so it is kept keys locked on one freq set. Hits our station like a hammer!!! anywhere around town and it's hilly around here It provides clear and uninterrupted (12v truck power) conversations with my son on his way to work and evening conversations with my granddaughter after school (pre-K) on her ride home. So yes I love it!!! And it is a great GMRS radio, but like all of the rebranded to 95 conformity GMRS only units it is very basic compared to unrestricted units. I would recommend this as a good mobile unit. How about you?
  3. Hey rockhound If anyone finds an adapter please let me know. https://www.amazon.com/Antenna-Adapter-Connector-Converter-Coaxial/dp/B076HHDTFT/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1520088848&sr=8-16&keywords=bnc+to+sma+adaptor I think this is the antenna adaptor you need Are these radios capable of tone scan? Scanning for CTCSS Tone 1. Press the [MENU] key to enter the menu. 2. Enter [11] on your numeric keypad to come to Menu 11: R-CTCS 3. Press the [MENU] key to select. Insure you have a tone activated (and it is not off) 4.Press the [*SCAN]to begin CTCSS scanning A flashing "CT" will be in the left status display to indicate the radio is in CTCSS scanning mode. In this mode, whenever the radio is receiving an RF signal on the selected MR channel or VFO frequency, the lower display will cycle through the CTCSS tones as they are being tested. Once the frequency of the received CTCSS tone is determined, the "CT" indicator will stop flashing. Press the [MENU] key to save the scanned tone into memory then press the key to exit the menu. We have one and ordered another last night for our grandson. I am very pleased with this radio.
  4. Thanks SteveC7010 for the heads up I leave some slack in the coax on all my stuff, maybe because I'm not that neat Thanks n4gix I thought that there might be a reason they said to add a loop. We ran a choke on our Solarcon A-99 , we live right off I-40 at the edge of town, a mile away from two big truck stops It's a spewing RF nightmare around here. I tried to read the pdf you linked, but WOW!!! way over my skillset, but thanks for the info. As for the physical loop, before unrolling the coax I slowly formed the loop then straightened out the rest. I really didn't want to bend this expensive (to us) new coax but the antenna manufacture knows WAY more than a radio loven hillbilly so I did it anyway. again thanks for the info ya'll
  5. Thank you JohnE That makes since That's also something I would have never thought of
  6. I just noticed this was my first post on this forum. So Hello Fellow GMRS operators & enthusiast WRAN 763 Charlie Mc here in NW Arkansas Been 11m for a while, FRS for 3 or so years with the grandkids :) Sold ALL! my 11m equipment and went GMRS this year. I'm a very slow keyboard operator, so I won't post much. But I read a lot. Really it better that way. Thank Ya'll for all the great GMRS info!!! Charlie
  7. Good Morning I have a question about our Comet CA-712EFC antenna. Here are the supplied instructions They say to make a loop or two with the coax. I was wandering the reason for this? Also has anyone using this antenna added the loop? Will it affect the propagation pattern? We did add the loop, app 18-24" diameter and down from the antenna app 24" We are running a desktop base/repeater @40W with a internal duplexer 70' Commscope LFD4-50A coax Comet 712 with the base at 25' above the ground (& we live on a good hill) We are getting good clear communications across down town (app 7miles) to a Baofeng GMRS V1 HT so I think our setup is all good. Any thoughts on this loop? Thanks Charlie
