I haven't looked into GROL myself, but it sounded like from what he said that a port-based business that uses radio communication with ships would similarly need equipment installed and maintained by someone with such a license, and depending on the size of the operation it might behoove them to have such a person on staff.  This was in the PNW and there are commercial ports, so 20-30 years ago before ubiquitous cellphones this may particularly have made sense even for ships in port.

I have to ask what do you want out of being a HAM or going GROL?  Are you on the water or more land bound?  In my case, I have a 12 year old Grand Daughter who we both got our HAM ticket together.... But everyone in the family needs to connect with us via GMRS...  Hope this helps.

  2. If this Repeater owner is like me.... I only turn it on as needed for my community and I do not list it on any directories.  Sorry but it for family in the field and neighbors who lose power and internet...

Hope this helps from the mind of a repeater owner.

I know Goodland as I have a few wells in the area.

    Just your old post.

I am getting a UV-935G shipped this week after watching your YouTube review and positive comments regarding the radio.

Have you found a work around for programming the radio using Chirp?

From comments I have read, the Wouxun software is alot to be desired but does work with a bit of effort.

Like on my Baofeng radios I do like the ability to group, copy and paste frequencies as new channels are discovered and dropped them in the corresponding groups.

    Enjoying your videos!

I had one of the first KG-935G and used CHiRP and made a backup img file if I screwed it up like I did on my 805...  While my local repeater was down I offered to RT Systems if they would like my 935 to write software.  They took me up and within 2 weeks we have this great software.  https://www.rtsystemsinc.com/RPS-KG935G-Programming-Software-and-USB-K4Y-cable-brfor-the-Wouxun-KG-935G_p_1993.html

CHIRP only works for those programers who have a 935 to play with and sometimes it work and not.  O true confession... on my 805 I blow away all the channels and it bricked my radio so that is why I offer a CHIRP img file to fix it because I had two 805 and had one radio to make the file....

935 is a great radio and I monitor my HAM channels.

    Hope this helps.

  5. If you are going to do Zello, get the app on your cell phone...  I have a GMRS repeater for family and neighbors and I hook up a iPad with a sound cable to repeater and load Zello app on iPad.  Also setup a few channels for my select group of preauthorized user to use as it for the teen girls to talk on.  Now the teens just text only.  Only had the cost of the sound cable.  But I could take that off my discovery list of how to do it.

I just finished a conversation on one of my repeaters about the antics of an operator on the system last night.

Like I personally have any control over it.  But then I realized I do have control of it.  By yanking the cord out of the wall feeding power to the repeaters.

At this point Johnstown675 and Johnstown600 (the linked repeater to midwest) are off. And may well be for good.

So here's what NOT to do.  When you are a GMRS user, and you are using someone else's repeater FOR FREE because they make a serious effort to provide and maintain equipment for you to use.  Don't complain to them that someone 3 states away on a linked system was acting the fool, cussing and drunk on the repeater system.  It's a REALLY good way to make them mad.  For them to decide it's NOT worth the trouble to keep the equipment on the air and then decide to just pull the plug.

For those of you in this area that were using the link and the 675.  The jury is still out on what I am gonna do going forward.  You have ONE person to thank for it being gone.  And that's for you to figure out.  But I ain't listening to people complain to me about the actions of another on a linked system.  And if you happen to be the guy that complained.... CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! You got the repeaters shut down.  SO there will be no more bad words on the repeater, since there will be no repeater.

    RANT OFF>...

As a fellow repeater owner... I agree with your rant...  In fact, I have an aproved only closed repeater and first problem maker, change the codes.  Per FCC I have the rules in my favor.  There are two types of users, those so thankful and the other who think it like public access and they can say whatever.  Keep to you guns...

EDIT: My repeater is not listed and it more word of mouth, friend of a friend....

  7. As a fellow KG-935G owners and for future owners.... I use the following to program this radio.  I found the free software from MFG does not cut it like cut and paste and host of other features....  You can purchase form the following:

    https://www.buytwowayradios.com/rt-systems-rps-kg935g.html

    https://www.rtsystemsinc.com/KG-935G_c_2138.html

Just so you know RT System has done other Wouxun radios of which I had software for another Wouxun Ham radio.  So I asked them if they where going to do a 935 software.... they said yes but have not ordered a radio yet... I said I will send my 935 to use so you can make the software which is like the other sister Wouxun radio...  They accepted the offer and returned the 935.  I ordered the software and all works well.  Get it.

Hope this helps you.....  I wishing they will do it in Mac OS as I have an old XP pc to run it.  This is for what it is worth.

  8. JD, we started as GMRS for family, Jeeping plus installed a neighborhood repeater.  With our Ham Ticket opens up the two radio even more.  In fact, you can take your KG-935 (which I have one as well) and only monitor Ham repeaters in your area.  You will not be able to put in the TX Freq but good listening and learning.  O the reason grand daughter at 13 and I got our Ham Ticket as we did not have learn and use Mores Code.  I think the Hams get together over a meal which my grand daughter likes to go to some of her favorite restaurants.  Last suggestion find a local Ham club and go to a meeting with or without meal and make a connections.  They may help you get you on the track to study and or give the test.  If you want to know more how we studying let me know... we did a study buddy on iPads and it was fun and competed with each other on practice test scores.

  9. You can spend any amount of money.  So after got GMRS license we purchased a used VRX-7000 on ebay for less the $500 and learned a lot as we got it on air.  Now we hardly have it on as we have a great regional GMRS repeater near us.  Good luck and finding what you want to do with your repeater.  Our VRX-7000 is for family and neighborhood mostly and the regional repeater is by permission to get access on.

GMRS is a practical radio service where short range voice communications is needed.

Amateur (ham) radio can be used for the the same purpose but is more of a communications hobby radio service.  It can be used for local or world wide communication, experimental communication, satellite, bouncing signals off the moon and back to earth, microwaves, TV.  You can use different modes like AM, FM, SSB, CW (code), digital etc.

Good points Jeff.  Because of doing simplex from one HT to another it is limited so I put up a repeater at the house and range/sound is great in the valley.

I think if you came to GMRS to rag chew with randos you probably feel underwhelmed. That is definitely ham territory. GMRS is really just an expanded FRS and seems to be focused on family and friend tactical (meaning local) communication.

You are on target... we use GMRS for family and neighborhood with PL code thus we know each other and more meaningful conversation, e.g. your horse is loose again.  Half of our family will not get Ham ticket.

Side bar question: Do you think your family would benefit from a HAM license? What can do you on HAM that a basic user of UHF/VHF can't do with GMRS/MURS?

This could be my misconception but I see HAM as a band for people who like to experiment and more "advanced" radio work besides simple voice communication.

Personally my family isn't going to get any benefits from HAM at this point in time. In our situation the GMRS license works well, for us. Its purpose was back up communication here in the local area. Our telecommunication network has gone down in earthquakes, mostly due to overloading. Based on where we live and work a single low powered GMRS repeater connects it all together. That made selling a GMRS radio to them easy. A simple HT that they can just turn on to monitor and talk with a simple PTT. Simple, easy, affordable. No need for them each to apply for a license. Call signs are simple. When needed you just call it out and from there just use your first names. And quite frankly, no one is going to jump down the throat of a user if my wife or kid doesn't ID every 15 minutes or the end of the convo like happens on HAM. This user friendly experience has morphed it into more than just a backup plan and it get used recreationally. Mostly for backcountry communication here.

I am not saying GMRS is the greatest thing ever. It's just another radio service band that has an intended purpose. Same as HAM.

I have five in our family and only my now 13 yo grand daughter and I got our Ham ticket end of May 2021.  We like GMRS more for conversation with the family but Ham allows us to be in the world... we talk to folks all over the world via DMRoIP.

I got mine.  Been wanting to get one for the family, mostly to keep in contact and motivate them to get a ham license, but couldn't part with the $70 fee.  When I heard it was going to be $35 I waited and finally got it.  I really don't think they will get a ham license but who knows.

I agree... got new GMRS license for my grand daughter and all is good for 10 years as I'm 75 and she good to go!!!

  14. WOW what a pain...  Because I have several FRN numbers and logins, it took me a day to clean up and consolidate.  All done and granddaughter applied for her GMRS (code ZA) license.  Just in her price range $35 along with her Ham license.

So if you are having issue gave a shout out and someone maybe able to help you....  It is a system of getting your FRN # first the setting up your online payment via CORES then applying for your license via ULS database...  Have fun it a government bureaucratic process.

  15. Your are the man... I only have one and love the KG-935G (can monitor my Ham channels not TX) and one sister radio KG-UV8H for my Ham side of life (I my Ham ticket and can monitor GMRS as well (not TX on GMRS).

They both are same beefiness and interchange battery and accessories.  B2WR did it right and great customer service which I only used once.

    Enjoy your 935G...

I am going to have to study for my Ham I guess.

Go for it Mike.  I like my GMRS for family as well as using for our family a private GNRS repeater for us and neighborhood.  BUT with a Ham ticket so much more with selection of radios and hundreds of repeaters to pick from to use without joining.  My now 13 yo grand daughter and I got our Ham ticket last May 2021 and we have fun talking to locals within 40 miles via repeaters, doing fox hunts as well as the speaking to the whole world.  We only use HT and do a lot with DMRoIP.  Grand daughter talks to a group of teen hams on weekend via Digital Youth Group Net FRI, SAT, SUN at 6:45 PM EST on Brandmeister Talk Group 96 https://hose.brandmeister.network/#/?subscribe=96  It a new Teen group and growing.  FYI like GMRS folks, Ham folks are good and welcoming folks.
