  1. Thats what I did but the cable was not long enough for the application. I am one of the 10% ?
  2. Seems like I am not the only one having problems with this radio. I dont understand why they didn’t at least offer a monitor option. I have a separate problem with power. It will not produce more than 25 watts and that is in High mode. And something else I dont understand is why my swr is better in repeater mode than in non-repeater mode?? I may also have a dud. Lets hope a swap will fix it. Good luck!
  3. Thank you Michael. Great info! I do have a barrel connector between the two when I tested the magnet antenna. Let me see if I have a different one somewhere and try that.
  4. I am doing battle trying to find a decent coax for my GMRS mobile setup. I used the RG-8X and it seems to be a big fail. I am losing power and the SWR is high. I am pretty sure it is the cable but how can I tell? When I put up my magnetic antenna on top of my 2020 Ram, The SWR is around 1.3 to 1.5 @ 20 watts. If I connect a 10 foot RG-8X extension then it goes south and the swr raises to 2.5 to 3.5. Yes the cable is ok. I tested it. The magnet mount is a Midland with a Midland 6db antenna and it is using RG-58U cable. If I extend it with the RG-8X will that really cause the swr to raise that much? I am trying to hard mount an antenna using an NMO mount with good cable but want to make sure I have everything running before I invest a lot of time running the cable. Thanks for any help.
  5. Ok I think I got the answer. Let me get a hold of a dummy load and test again. I am using a MFJ-894 SWR meter for the test. The meter works as I have used it on other radios with self-test functions that show the same readings. I will get a dummy load and have a look. Thanks!
  6. I finally got my hands on the Wouxun KG-1000G to replace my Midland MXT 400 as my Mobile. The removable face plate is great! You can put the box under the back seat and have the faceplate up front. So far so good. Went to check my swr and power and saw I only was sending about 20 watts with an swr of 1.4. The radio has three power levels and I checked them. The display says “H” so I should be putting out closer to 50 watts. Well, looks like I have to disassemble everything and return it costing even more. I am hoping someone here van maybe shed some light on the subject. Just for info.. My Midland had an swr of 1.2 and about 35 watts. The antenna is the same. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
  7. Thats a good idea. I am trying to figure out where I am listening to so I can get a direction and know where the repeater is. Basically I am learning.
  8. Thanks Michael and Alex. The bird house feeder was exactly what I had in mind with an antenna sticking out however I was concerned about a ground plane. How could I possibly get antenna cable in the house without damaging my window frames?
  9. Thanks! Those are a few great ideas. I never thought the signal would transmit through PVC that well.
  10. I am new to GMRS and trying to get back into the ham hobby. I was involved with CB overseas for many years but when I came back to the U.S. everything has changed including my memory. ? I am living in an association and or course antennas are not permitted. (Let's leave it at that). I am up in Farmington MN and there is a repeater about 2 miles as the crow flies in an open direction on the side of my house that my deck is on. I currently have a Wouxun KG-805G that won't reach the repeater from my basement window even though its a straight shot to the repeater. I just ordered a Midland MXT-400 for my truck but would like to base-station it until I can get my hands on a KG-1000G. I want to try and put up an antenna, on my deck, that is so low to the rail that it is very hard to see so that the association won't complain. I was thinking of a small yagi antenna to point at the repeater and would like to hear your opinions please. I chose the yagi for the gain and small size. Also, If I had to run 50 foot of cable what would be your recommendation for cable. Many thanks! WRMG216.
