SteveShannon got a reaction from WRYF747 in Has anyone tried the KG 1000M yet?
I agree with the others. A mobile MURS radio doesn't do anything that a good MURS handheld won't do.
Either can be connected to the same external antennas, With a handheld all the controls are in your hand, a feature folks are willing to pay extra for in a mobile radio it would appear, It's possible that the KG1000M has a better receiver than an inexpensive MURS radio, but probably not much different than a decent handheld, 2 watts is 2 watts, regardless of form-factor, 5 channels is 5 channels, regardless of form-factor, If you just want a microphone in your hand, there are ones that plug into the handhelds. It's like they asked "What's a problem nobody has, so we can solve it?"

I’ve found a few over the years. Or sure how accurate they are.

I'll take a solid pass. Way, way to much money, even though I'm positive it's a great radio.
I used a pair of ICOM MURS handhelds and couldn't get 1 full statute mile out of them. Measured output was 1.2w on high. I sent my son the the school parking lot and he went out of range before he got there. Just for grins, I called out to him with my bullhorn and he could hear that. Could make out what I was saying, but he heard it, which was better than the radios.
So, while you're mileage may vary, it's a whole lotta nope for me.

Maybe they're hoping to sell some to walmart drivers? Walmart is known for being a big user of MURS, and in many states a hard mounted radio with hand mic is exempted from hands-free communications device laws....not that you can't achieve this with a portable and hand mic, though.
I don't think it's a big change to the firmware between this and the GMRS version... both similarly locked down, just a different range and power level for tx. Being based on the uv920/980 means they already cover both bands anyway.

I personally have not. I’m sure it’s a good radio but it’s a lot to pay for only five channels maxed at 2 watts tx. I imagine it’s the same as the KG 1000G for rx. I wouldn’t say no if it was given to me though ?

I don’t know of a single introductory thread here. If anything you’ll be permanently scarred by the arguments about what kinds of radios are best and whether a roger beep portends the end of the world as we know it, but it’s actually a pretty fun bunch of people.
Some of the best introduction to gmrs is in the form of Notarubicon videos on YouTube, although you will also want to pay attention to some of the people here to hear some reasoned differing opinions. In particular, look for his GMRS for Dummies video.
Don’t let anyone tell you your radio isn’t good enough. Eventually something someone says may sound like that, but don’t take it personally. You’ll quickly learn what’s good enough for your own needs.

Naaa, the REAL arguments are about antennas!
Also got a mobile unit for offroad, but didn't find many people to talk with. But around home we have three good repeaters, so plenty to do. I also got repeater-capable handhelds for camping use, and also use one at the home w/ a base antenna positioned in the room for best reception.

SteveShannon reacted to WRTJ886 in Is more than one license permitted by the FCC?
@OffRoaderX
I don't have a link to the rules explicitly saying it's allowed, but I accidentally paid for (2) licences under the same FRN number and now I have (2) calls. I never use the other one, but it exists in ULS and the feds haven't said anything to me about it yet. I think they were just happy to have their extra $35.

I was telling Steve (and may have mentioned it earlier), my original FRN was created for managing my amateur license. I created a second FRN for the GMRS license so my wife and kids could each have their own FCC login account to view/manage the GMRS related items without them having access to my account associated with my amateur license.
Since I lost my GMRS license info and FRN, I just requested a new license under the FRN I created for my amateur account. Technically, I had two concurrently active GMRS licenses under 2 different FRNs. Though, after Steve helped me with information I needed, I was able to recover my second FRN account, but there is literally nothing listed under it anymore. I have no idea what happened to it.

I had my ham license back in 1996 but let it expire. Doing a search on my old callsign (still unassigned) shows it was issued in 1996, expired in 2006 and cancelled by FCC 2008. I didn't remember anything about a FRN when I got my license or if it even existed. When I got my GMRS license in Oct, the FCC site said something about a existing FRN in my name but was tied to a email address from my old dial up provider, phone that doesn't exist anymore and a address long gone but let me create a new one so I guess I now have two FRN's. I clicked on the link you provided and searched my last name and it shows the FRN RegDate was 5/22/2001 (when I wasn't even active anymore) and the same RegDate for my dad who got his license a year or so after me in another state. If I had to guess, FRN wasn't really a thing until 2001 and they moved everyone over to that system but I could be or am probably wrong....

I just found two FRNs for your name and sent them to you in a PM. The older one was from 2002.

So, I don’t know if this will help, but I was able to find it this morning. I went to this page:
https://apps.fcc.gov/cores/advancedSearch.do?csfrToken=
And when I searched I gave just my name and my city/state/zip, although I probably could have left those off.

However, if you want a different callsign it is possible to cancel your existing license and get another. There was a guy on here just the other day who has done that four or five times.

Yes. It is listed in public search results for a license in the ULS.

SteveShannon got a reaction from WRTT642 in Newby wondering about licensing process/timing
A lot of people have problems paying because of the software. I did too. I called the toll free number listed in ULS and a nice lady walked me through an alternate way to pay. Do that.
