  1. Its hard to cover all GMRS radios, but the terminology is not standard. in and out tones are a big one. And repeater offsets. not all GMRS radios call it the same. And maybe a word on "Chirp" I've had alot of issues with it.
  2. Ok, so what is between 450.0 MHz (end of 70cm) and 462.5625 (beginning of GMRS) or between (top of GMRS) 467.7125 and 902.0 (bottom of 33cm) Kinda new to alot of this and I have nothing to scan these frequencies with. But they are NOT in the Ham spectrum, so what are they used for? And could GMRS expand into them? Ok so the existing GMRS would not be able to use them, but the FCC recently authorized FM to the CB world..Thanks to Cobra electronics. how many old CBs have FM? We started with 23 channels AM & SSB, then 40 AM & SSB now with FM
  3. What happens when a soldier speaks to a truck driver? Both have special acronyms and codes, Then a LEO gets involved, again different codes. So, a lawyer who speaks in circles and is incapable of answering a simple question gets involved with alot of leagaleese and double speak so it's nearly impossible to get a clear message. The FCC does not understand or really care so the OK it and there we have it..Everything should be in clear and concise English. And Alice Cooper says "mixerthingwhaynowbatcrapwhatdaywasitbefore." and we are all confused.
  4. I have an older ICOM IC-731 that I still like, goes from 0.100.0 to 29.999.9 and everything in between. My BAUFENG will get me into the 2M and up, just no FM or SSB. About the only thing I can't get to is the 60M 50MHz band...Maybe not the newest whizbang equipment, but it works
  5. I dont usually travel in a group, but when if/when I do its with a CB. It still has way more users and gets better range. I have a Nagoya Model NMO 200C antenna with NAGOYA GPK ground plane sitting at 35 ft and usually don't pick up anything. I push 47W and can't talk to repeaters 20 miles away. So far GMRS has been a big waste of money. I left it on scan from near Austin TX to Shreveport LA and didn't get a peep. Travel channel? Pick any of them nobody uses them anyway. Midland MXT 500 base/mobile Wouxun KG805G and Baofeng UV-9G handhelds
  6. I picked up an ICOM IC731 but can't find any manuals or information on it. 19.76.5-29.976.5 I don't have the right antenna set up yet. Is the ATU 100 EXT a good antenna tuner 18-50MHz? Just kinda waiting to buy a tower/antenna and all the bells & whistles.
  7. I'm hearing a repeater Loud and Clear, it says "welcome to the military repeater", I should be able to reach it as I'm less than 5 miles from FT Hood. But so far nothing..It transmits the same message about every 30 minutes or so...Is there any way to find out if it uses input or output tones? Or any information? Its on 462.550 Ch15 Also while scanning this morning I spoke with a ham operator about 12 miles away, who was just playing on the GMRS band...
  8. If I only wanted to talk to my wife I would have got a MURS 900MHZ radio. or simply walk into the other room. I got into GMRS to talk to other people. Not chatter away for hours but check on road conditions or events. There is only one repeater that I should be able to use, but so far nothing..don't know if I'm doing something wrong or just can't reach the distance. I've put it on scan and pick up NOTHING ever. Very disappointed by the whole deal. At least with the little CB in my truck I can hear the gravel haulers and a few other trucks that come thru daily. But no locals.. I've scanned the 10M band, the 12M band, 2M and 6M bands and only thing I pick up is a religious station in Nashville. So, I see no reason no get a ham license. Granted I don't have the right antenna for Ham bands. I've put quite a bit of $$ into the GMRS just to hear static. Radioddity DB20G on a Nagoya NMO200c high gain antenna with Nagoya GPK-01 ground plane, sitting 25ft high. A Wouxun KG 805G and Baofeng UV 9G handhelds, and the Midland MXT500 in my truck. And all I get is static.
  9. thank you I've edited the question. I was reading it wrong.
  10. Some fantastic info on coax, very informative. But why when you buy a GMRS radio that comes with and antenna is the coax so tiny? OK, On to my question, how far apart should the base antennas be for CB 27Mhz 11 M and Gmrs 462--467 MHz both are vertical with ground plane. Both will be around 60 ft. I will probably never transmit on both at the same time but I don't want bleed over. I know the coax used will have alot to do with that too.
  11. There is one in Troy TX I'll have to find his info
  12. OK please explain how to go back to GMRS. Was fun for a minute. Never mind I got it:)
  13. One downside to "opening" this radio is it takes forever to scan It goes past the 450.0 MhZ on 70cm 420MHz and below and over the 144.-148.0 mhz on 2 M 144 MHz. of course it does NOT have side band so your not going to hear alot of conversations. You will get the noise from what I assume is data, loud static.
  14. The Radioddity DB25-G is CHIRP compatible according to the website, kinda wish I'ld gotten that rather than the DB20_G Multi Band? JMHO if your licensed for GMRS and Ham why not? Unless your running too much power, how does the FCC know what radio your transmitting on? A "modified" GMRS or an unmodified ham radio? As long as your legally licensed to operate those frequencies. Power? go to CB ch6 27.025 any evening. Sitting in central Texas with 1 ft of coax on a 100W dummy load I can hear Orlando FL, Lansing MI, a Few way up in the NE Main, CT NY NJ Them boys are putting out some power. ch 17 and 28 are just about as bad. I know some of you would rather take a butt whopping than mess around on 11M 27mhz but its alive and well LOL
  15. I'll be doing 100% coax I have a Surecom SW 102and Surecom SW 33 mark II. to check SWR and power. I was certainly disappointed to learn all my CB test equipment SWR/Power wouldn't work on GMRS. I do have dedicated GMRS antennas but they look just like the ones that come with the little CBs that are on the market. Fit in the palm of your hand, some dead key around 6 Watts and swing 10-15Watts I run a President Bill in my Ford Ranger but have it on a 5 Ft firestick, SWR is 1.5/1 to 2.1/1 from 25.615 to 29.205. If I'm on a longer trip I'll put in a RM AM/SSB KL23P 100W linear. On a good day it will talk across the grass median. Ran a Midland MXT500 for awhile, with the included antenna, I was not at all impressed. Nobody out there. Of course alot of places I go there is NO cell service, NO FM radio, and AM is the boarder blaster Mexican stations. So, I was thinking of running the Midland as a base station, and as long as I have the pole down put up a good CB Base as well. That's another story on a different forum.. Guess I'll go looking for an antenna analyzer. And see if I can figure out how to use it. Rules can be broken, Laws cannot (should not). So don't lecture me on power and frequencies, I know the rules.
