  1. I hear a lot of farm irrigators systems on MURS 5 in my area.
  2. I have use this site with really some good accuracy. You put in your location, antenna height, for the base state, and then use a height of four foot to check your range.
  3. What is your budget to work with?
  4. I don't know how good this is, however you might want to check this indoor antenna out.
  5. @ TonyAldo Here is the antenna I use, I got the magnet base on it. Comet FC-54NMO
  6. You could do like I do as well. When I'm in my car I hook my Handheld up to a mobile antenna, at least until you find a good mobile radio that you like.
  7. Obviously, the current rules and interpretations prohibit crossband mobile repeater at this time as the rules are currently written. However, a low power (1 to 2 watt) crossband mobile repeater channel would be an interesting ideal to petition the FCC for. I think/assume if we ask Rich or the staff here at GMRS they could provide some guidance, assistance in drafting a formal petition, as well as suggest the best verbiage needed to give the petition the best chance of getting the current rules changed to allow a low power crossband mobile repeater in the GMRS.
  8. This is about as close as your going to get in the rules. §95.347 Automatic control.
  9. Some of the scanner I had. Yes back late 70s early 80s even had a 8 track scanner.
  10. Here is some of the radios, MDT I had in my squad car back in my LEO days. BTW this was one first MDT placed in to service in the US.
  11. I have used this Antenna from here with a lot of success. http://www.dpdproductions.com/page_gmrs.html#gmrsvert
  12. More than likely, they will turn it on when the system is completed.
  13. @ peterdohherty Your ideal, has some good merits, other people has brought up the some concerns, do you really want PSAP to monitor full time the GMRS channel, when people may be talking about what they need at the store, or to pick up little Johnny or Susie at school. Most likely not. A lot of it depends on what your objective is. I would suggest maybe look in to what I have been doing, in my case, my goal is showing the value it would bring in tracking severe thunderstorms, or tornados thru the county or area. I have spoken with 3 EMA county directors, they open to the idea and have expressed interested in setting up some kind of emergency radio network for non-hams, non- Public Safety people in the county ( AKA GMRS/FRS, and or CB people) to direct report things (such as Storm track information). A couple of them have considered and spoken about the value of additional resources it could bring, one of them is even considering assist in setting a GMRS repeater, and putting person in to the county EOC during severe storms or tornado. I really think you would find the EMA directors much more receptive to the ideal of setting up some kind communication link to the GMRS Service, then going thru the local / county LEO official's. I hope that helps.
  14. The great debate, there is a time and place for encryption’s of public safety radio traffic. I think most people will agree with what I think when it should be used. IMHO, here is how, when Public safety should be encrypted in the following conditions: EMS-Medical calls: Primary tone out should be in the clear when they dispatch and on a separate channel, (I.E. Unit 1 you have a Delta response for a code 10 at 123 main street) However, any and all traffic from the EMS unit should be on separate channel (if possible) and encrypted. Fire departments: Anything to do with investigation of arson or similar crimes. LEO: When an officer makes a Routine traffic stops, it should be in the clear when he makes a traffic stop, however the requested information and returns of the Tag, Driver license, or check wants and warrant check should be encrypted. Selected calls (such as Suicides, or Sexual assault are the main two that come to mind should be encrypted. SWAT/Tactical operations should be full time encrypted. (warrant round-up, standoff etc.). Stings, (IE Prostitution, drug buys, DUI Check points etc.) should be encrypted. All Detective, investigate operations should be full time encrypted. Jail operations. However, if the department has good MDT / Data system in place, there is a good work around with that. I know DPD dispatcher years ago will sometimes tell the officers check your MDT, or unit 364 you got the signal 60 (Special assignment) I just send to your MDT in the #### block of any street, they kept the details off the off the air, however other unit in the area knew that I was on something, and they, we could look a call sheets MDT to see what it was.
  15. I have used this site http://wisp.heywhatsthat.com/ and found to be good one as well. Show is gaps in certain areas, that were pretty much dead on.
  16. If the radios has an open < unlocked> VFO, it also voids the part 90 cert that many of CCR claim to make them legal under in GMRS.

If your looking to keep un-approved user off your system, use DCS tones only < knocks bubble pack off right off the bat > and use separates DCS tones for input / output.
  18. I think it interesting, that 4 of these item listed is common problems in the GMRS service.
  19. Might I make this suggestion: Not sure what your budget is, however find yourself a really good handheld that you like, get a mobile antenna for you car. < make sure your portable can accept an external antenna> By doing that, you use it as handheld as use it as both, a portable, and a car radio, and when you get in to the car with the outside Car Antenna, connect it, this will give you little more range. Of course, it depend on what kind of radio you get as to the cost there, some range from 1 to 5 watts, and can be programed with repeater splits, you can also find some 2 to 4 DB gain antenna for around $25 to $50. I set up both my wife's and my vehicle for $180.00 each. When we are in out cars we have the out side antenna, when we are away from the car we are using the antenna that came with the radio. The main thing to consider is a most bubble pack don't allow you connect a external antenna, and if do attach an external antenna you will not be able to use FRS channels legally. Hope this suggest helps.
  20. I am considering getting 4 to 6 Motorola Radius M 1225 unit, model M34DGC90J2AA This is the 4 channel 40 Watt UHF model. I am planning on putting 4 of them in my vehicles, and taking 2 of them and making a repeater out them. I know I will need a controller, duplexer, and power packs, Unless someone has other ideals. My current thoughts are, take the radios with duplexer to my local Motorola Shop and have them program the radios for my mobile usage, set up and program the radio as repeater, and tune the duplexer for me. However, my questions are this: I cannot get the FCC Site to work to see if they are part 95. Has anyone had good or bad experience with the radio, for vehicle uses? Has anyone had good or bad experience with the radio as a repeater? Is it possible to do with model? Would I need to have to power turned down so it would have 80% to 100% duty cycle? If so, what's the power output would it need to be turned down to? Just so I know what to except. Thanks!
