  1. Just stumbled upon this radio this AM, was wondering myself. Seems solid for a CCR. Not a fan of the fixed antenna but Im sure that has to do with the weatherproof 'certification'.
  2. Anything specific you’re looking for help on? I have some experience with kenwood and can maybe help.
  3. Hmm.. that definitely makes sense. For the lesser output of portables would you mount them 10-15 feet apart at same height that way you'd equalize potential for reception and output? thanks for the reply...totally fanboy-ing right now LOL. LOVE the videos, have made a ton of info way more simpler to understand and are as equally entertaining! Also just sort of thinking out loud with this whole process....I agree the RT97 seems way more straightforward and more bomb proof. I don't have the need as much as the want or the 'can I make this work' factor. This and some cheap-bay radios could be worth the cost to tinker.
  4. **EDIT Moved to this forum because this may be the correct location, I apologize for wrong spot. Hello, I am newer to GMRS and have some basic understanding of how radio transmissions work. I'm a little fuzzy on nomenclature when it comes to repeaters, but I understand the concept. I had wondered in my head if you'd be able to set up a portable radio based repeater. This would be something for like at the beach, campsite, event, etc. In my internet wanderings I came across the following. Does anyone have any experience/thoughts/ideas they'd be willing to share. Seems like a lesser expensive idea to work out that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. SR-628 Cross Band Duplex Repeater Controller with Cable Free Shipping - Walkie-Talkie Android Phone Two Way Radio (walkytalkyshop.com) Thanks!

  6. Can I ask what you use the sat for? The ocd in me is twitching because it’s not centered lol….
  7. Kept trying! I was able to hit a repeater the other day about 47 ish miles away with the stock antenna.
  8. If no one is talking then you won't 'receive'. Its hard when there isn't alot of radio traffic. You should be able to key up the radio on channel 29 and hear the repeater opening (an open carrier for a brief second after you release your PTT). It is recommended you broadcast your callsign when you do this so it isn't a random key up. when you use a repeater it uses 2 channels - one to receive your radio transmission and a second to rebroadcast and repeat it out to a larger coverage area using more power. Have you checked on here to see if there is any other active repeaters local to you that may have more radio traffic?
  9. Good morning! I realize I’m new. I lurked for a while then got my license and now a HT. The uv-9g seems like quite a capable starter radio. The only real drawback I’ve found is the belt clip. Who on earth ok’d that design? Does anyone know of a company that makes any sort of kydex holster or clip set up? I’ve seen some things for the uv5 just not the 9g. thanks! john
  10. Just remember when mounting stuff under your seats, there are drains there so always consider water.
  11. I’ll apologize, I’m super new. I’ve been lurking for a few months and pulled the trigger on my license. I’d like to humbly ask for a handheld recommendation that may allow me to do the following. TX/RX GMRS RX vhf for monitoring public safety around me/on vacation. I work in Fire/LE and enjoy being nosy to the places we go. My home agency simulcasts some fire and ems on 151 vhf. It would be nice to monitor both. id like to be able to program groups/banks/zones with the capabilities to scan. That way I can select those specific areas I travel to. TYT 380 looks like I can do it and keep it in analog mode. Wouxon possibly too. thanks for your time! john
