If only someone would make a very simple to understand youtube video explaining this all in very simple terms that anyone could understand, while at the same time using very easy-to-understand hand-gestures..
Whoever could achieve that would literally become the queen of all that is GMRS!
I wish Josh would get right on that

Of course it depends on what you want to get from it. My favorite GMRS-only radio is the Wouxun KG-935G Plus. I am also a huge fan of my Wouxun KG-UV9D Mate H.A.M. radio. Other folks may not want to spend the money (I also have some cheapo Baofengs, like most here). My suggestion is to watch a bunch of YouTubes, get a feel for what you want to do with it, and get a feel for the wide range of radios that are available. It's kind of like asking "What's the best car for my needs?"

For a few dollars more, I chose this:

I've checked both antennas that came with the HT and I cannot get below 2!
Are you using a ground plane plate to help measure the SWR? Measuring HTs can be tough from what I have read.

It cracks me up how the militia guys will spend $$$ on guns, ammo, and preserved food, but they cheap out on radios (that they probably aren't even licensed for).

Would a Yaesu Motorized Mobile Antenna: 40m through 70cm - ATAS-120A tune GMRS frequencies on a MARS open yaesu 6000r.
I don't know anything about that antenna. However, I have a MARS-modded Yaesu 6000r and it pairs wonderfully with my Tram 1181 on 2m, 70cm, and GMRS, without adjustments.

Someone actually turned my transmitter off on one of my repeaters last year. They were using DTMF 1111 as a quick burst preamble and that was the default combination for the disable command on the repeater. I also had someone have a DTMF code setup as a roger beep and coincidentally happened to be the same combination I made up to stun the repeater. I had to drive to the repeater site to reset it on the panel.
You may want to reset the combinations on your luggage while you're at it, Mr. 1234

For years, my father designed and oversaw development of the top jet fighter IN THE WORLD, and to this day he refuses to read a manual for anything. I just sent him a Blu-Ray player, and he asked me to hook it up next time I visit. IT'S ONE HDMI CABLE. And his planes are still winning dogfights fifty years later. I give up.

Probably best to avoid the one named BARF...

I see that my Nagoya UT-72G GMRS antenna does not have a coil, but my Tram 1181 VHF/UHF antenna does. Hmm...

because you want to listen on your Wouxun radio
Both of my Wouxun radios pull in NOAA just fine.

No reason, if my existing radios pull in NOAA just fine.

I keep hearing "I don't want to have to carry two radios while doing an outdoor activity, while traveling, whatever..."
Two radios are not heavy. Also, you get the benefit if having tuned antennas for each, instead of one that might be almost good enough. If you don't want two radios, good for you. I think it makes me more attractive to the chicks to have two on my belt clips.

Yep, GMRS offset is always +5 to my knowledge.

I'm easy to find, but if someone reached out to me, I would ignore them. That might just be me.
