  1. To all who have replied, I'm going to go out on a ledge and risk looking like a fool... The targeted vehicle is a Jeep Wrangler JKU with removable fiberglas top. As such, in my opinion, the fiberglas rooftop would not provide any sort of ground plane effect. The antenna proposed (Nagoya NMO-20C) based upon what I could learn/find, is a 1/2 wave, center loaded antenna. With this understanding: Q1) could I create the necessary ground plane for the proposed antenna? If yes, would a small circular disc be suitable? What diameter? Q2) If the proposed antenna is a 1/2 wave antenna, is a ground plane required? As you can determine, I'm against the hood mount/ fender mount approach. If there is a lip mount that can be attached to the rear swing gate of a Jeep Wrangler, plse advise.
  2. Marcspaz, Gortex2 thank you both for the feedback given. For me personally, I do not want to see a radio antenna on the hood of my car. I'd prefer to put in extra thought/effort for a cleaner looking antenna mount, hence my decision to mount the antenna mount (Tram 1470) to my Jeep tailgate, and raise the antenna to be installed above the roof line using a riser/pole/pipe TBD. What are your thoughts regarding the use of the Nagoya NMO-200C antenna, which has the fold-down capability. I plan to use a Wouxun KG1000G or KG-XS20G radio, depending on the price I have to pay when the time to purchase comes (looking for best deal at that time). Respectfully, DG
  3. Recently purchased a TRAM 1470 NMO ground plane antenna mount kit, which will be used to locate a GMRS antenna just above the roofline of my Jeep Wrangler. I'd like to use a low profile GMRS antenna (Laird or similar type). Will the ground plane mount kit purchased improve the performance of a antenna of this type, or am I better off going with a standard antenna, such as a Nagoya NMO-200C type? Any shared wisdom is appreciated.
  4. FrostyFruits, thank you for your reply. A little background info first as there may be an error in my thinking / path forward, and/or info previously provided. I intend to make a custom gmrs antenna riser that will attach to the rear door hinges on a Jeep Wrangler JKU. The riser will have a small, top mounted platform that will sit just above the roof line of the JKU top (for best TX and RX operation.) I'm looking at the Phantom Elite antenna because...1. it does not require a ground plan. 2 small and somewhat aerodynamic. 3. reported good operation. My question relates to the best antenna mount that I can attach to the top of my riser, or can I simply create a mounting hole that will directly accept the Phantom Elite antenna. My plan , at the moment, is to use a KG-1000G mobile radio with the Phantom Elite antenna. I welcome any comments or suggested "re-direction". VR, WRQW247
  5. Currently doing homework for new GMRS install to my Jeep JKU. I will be creating a custom antenna mount that will elevate the antenna base just above the JKU fiberglas top for improved TX/RX. I'm wanting to use a low profile antenna due to height restrictions I must deal with. I like the Phantom antenna based upon reviews, but this antenna requires a ground plane. I'm searching for advice / hints as to install this antenna to the mount I will make and a proper ground plane to use. Any shared wisdom is appreciated. Thank you in advance. Dave G / WRQW247
  6. WayOverThere, very, very helpful. Thank you.
  7. I need to determine/understand when I am in the "forum" and within the mygmrs website. I'm guessing ("SWAG"ing perhaps) that the mygmrs website is the database/site information aspect, while the forum allows people to search/review threads regarding different topics related to GMRS. The learning curve is still pretty much horizonal. DG
  8. First off...thank you to add who have commented/added to this thread. Similar to WROZ437, I am new to the GMRS world and seeking an education before purchasing a GMRS radio. Lessons learned: WB and NB programmable capability are desired (although 'm not sure what each mode represents and the effects). Don't buy the "275" model, as it is limited in features and programmable abilities The -1000G" unit appears to be well liked / well reviewed. May someone explain to me what the references to Part 95e represents? Are there any good quality USA made GMRS radios available? thank you to all for your time. VR, DG
  9. Gortex2, thank you. Being that I had to login to the mygmrs website to see the repeater map, doesn't this qualify as being already "logged in"? I guessing there is a different login location that is needed....help plse. VR, DG
  10. Is there a method to insert a keyword and search the mygmrs website for discussions related to the specific keyword? VR, DG
  11. Is a HAM Callsign absolutely required to complete my Profile on mygmrs.com? I currently do not have one and was not planning on getting one. VR, DG.
  12. New to GMRS and this website. Used the mygmrs.com website to look at local repeaters. Based upon screenshot attached, is permission/approval required to access the repeater site noted? I'm also a little confused regarding the "sign In to View" note regarding tones associated to this repeater site. Any guidance is appreciated. VR, DG
