  1. I'm doing this now with Zello but I hate VOX. It cuts off the first part of a conversation.
  2. Thanks, those are the ones I have followed for the radio. These people are actually connecting the radio to a URI or a DIY URI. Both have CM1xx sound card inside.
  3. Not planning to use the Allstarlink network per se. myGMRS uses it to run their netowork. Just a few modifications are all that are needed to setup a small group of nodes. You don't need a registration server.
  4. So, I've been trying to setup a small Allstarlink network. I was looking for a source that I could purchase a modified USB sound FOB. Not much luck there and my micro-soldering skills are not so great. I just don't have the eye sight to do this. I contacted Repeater-Builder and asked if he had anything or knew anyone that had anything like what I needed. He said he felt sure his RIM Lite would work. I told him I could do the radio part of the soldering. I also showed him a pic of one of the guys node radio that I will be connecting to with his Maxtrac board on a Baofeng 888. He still said he thought the RIM lite was the better way to go. So, I got the board and the radio soldered up. I tried using simpleusb but it's not working. Error messages show the connection to the RIM Lite dies, reconnects and dies, over and over. I tried the usbradio setup but have errors there as well. Simpleusb: [Oct 26 10:30:45] WARNING[3421] chan_simpleusb.c: Loaded parameters from simpleusb_tune_usb_1501.conf for device usb_1501 . I can't post my questions on Allstarlink.org as I'm not a Ham and no response from Repeater-Builder. I'm close, but no cigar. TIA
  5. Hello, I setup a backyard repeater that's not giving me a lot of range due to antenna height and numerous tall trees. In this location, I will never be able to be above the trees. I am also in a paid repeater group that is connected to myGMRS. I do not plan to compete against them but may try setting up a 'private' Allstar network with some friends in IL and WI and others that may want to connect. I have a VM running Allstar now and just need a radio to connect to it. I'm a little fuzzy on this regarding connecting to a network like myGMRS. So is a radio in a box, connected to a Pi, simplex even though it RXs and TXs on a repeater channel? What if that radio in a box is also connected to a repeater, does that make duplex? Thanks!!
  6. Just an FYI, your mileage may vary! I bought this meter due having issues with a Latnex meter not correctly calculating SWR. Seems the Surecom is no different. Apparently, the newer models have this issue. Older models do not. Contacted Surecom about this and they are playing dumb when I presented evidence to back this up. I'm not a radio expert by any means but I feel I'm pretty confident I can read a cutting chart by a antenna manufacturer and can measure twice and cut once. I don't think I can get the SWR to 1:1 on two antennas. If so, I need to buy some lottery tickets. I think its an issue with the advertised frequency range. I checked it on a ham frequency of 146.52 and got a 1.72 SWR. Some of that could be the antenna isn't tuned for that frequency but it shows it can report something other than 1.0. This antenna was checked with a NanoVNA that was calibrated just prior to the test. Notice the difference in SWR.
  7. Hello, I ran across this a few days ago looking for a way to connect a HT to Zello w/o using VOX. https://www.ebay.com/itm/123227719042 VOX is OK but its fiddly. Any way, I was wondering if this could be connected to a Baofeng UV-82? I found how to do this on AllstarLinks Wiki. What's holding me back are the connection for the 6 pin DIN connector on the R1-2020 controller. Not sure what Y/K/I SQL is but I "think" its the same as COS on the Baofeng. The other 2 I'm not positive about are AF in and AF out. Again, I "think" AF in is RX and AF out is TX. Can any one say for sure or have any clue. I can make the cable to connect the controller to the radio. 8. I'm on a repeater and was going to go with 465 but since SWR is for the TX, I wasn't sure. Didn't want to start cutting if I wasn't sure. Thanks!!
  9. I searched the forum but couldn't find what I was looking for. Just got a Tram 1486 antenna and it needs to be tuned. Do I tune it for 462 or 467, or maybe in the middle, 465? Thanks!!
  10. I d/l a second copy yesterday to install the software on a laptop I planned to use. It also didn't have the help file. The copy I d/l a couple weeks ago and install on a desktop did so I don't know what happened. Anyway, here it is in case anyone is interested. The part that I'm scratching my head over is the PTT configuration under the Port menu. simplex_en.chm
  11. I had plans to have it be an open repeater but have been thinking about not doing that for reasons you just stated. I would like to know who's using it and that they are licensed to operate a GMRS radio. There are plenty of yahoos out there unlicensed. I heard some this past weekend burping and farting over the radio. Not going to tolarate that. Just not cool or even funny!
  12. Hello! OK, so I've been in this for 2 months now and definitely not an expert. Know enough to be dangerous. I'm retired and have a lot of time on my hands. I plan to setup a neighborhood repeater with two HTs and an amp that should give me 35 -40 watts of power on the TX side. I have a repeater controller, Surecom SR-328. It works. No duplexer yet, but its on the list. I'm working on moving this setup outside and have a weatherproof enclosure on the way as well as a solar charger. So, my question is this. If I use this for personal use, I don't have to broadcast my call sign every 15 minutes. But if I allow others, I do. I'm on several repeaters and I have never heard the call sign transmitted. Is this something in-audible? Found this piece of software from a YT video, http://f6dqm.free.fr/soft/simplex/en/simplex.htm , that might do the ID for me if I connect a HT and to a PC. It may as well had been written in a foreign language as I do not know all the terminology. Anyone know how to do this?? I have a .wav file with my call sign in morse code I'd like to broadcast. TIA
