  1. Looking for some help. I’m located in Illinois. Recently purchased a VXR 7000, with duplexer. The programming cable was from bluemax49ers. Using ce27windows when I plug in the cable the repeater switched to display CL on briefly and then that disappears. When trying to read the repeater nothing happens. I have not been able to find anything related to this online and any help would be greatly appreciated
  2. Hello, I work in San Luis Obispo, Ca and there is a repeater in town, when I try to add Rx/Tx codes 141.3 I don't hear anything or have confidence I am connected. There is also a NOAA tower in San Luis Obispo, and I can hear the weather loud and clear. Any thoughts ? I am using a Baofeng UV-9G TH
  3. Lets start out with my setup so this might not work for you. My repeater is a Bridgecom BCR-40DU, I purchased the URIx, 25 pin cable, and Micro SD from the myGMRS store. Make sure your not using a Raspberry Pi 4, trust me it doesn't work. I ended up getting a Raspberry Pi 3B+. After installing the micro sd card into the pi make sure you connect an ethernet cable, log in, change password like instructed, then set up wifi if you want by following instructions in the quick start guide that came with the micro sd card, don't forget to log into your router and set up port forwarding. Your gonna wanna go into your simpleusb.conf file and change a few things. sudo nano /etc/asterisk/simpleusb.conf carrierfrom = usbinvert ; no,usb,usbinvert ; no - no carrier detection at all ; usb - from the COR line on the USB sound fob (Active high) ; usbinvert - from the inverted COR line on the USB sound fob (Active low) ctcssfrom = usb ; no,usb,usbinvert ; no - CTCSS decoding, system will be carrier squelch ; usb - CTCSS decoding using input from USB sound fob (Active high) ; usbinvert - from the inverted CTCSS line on the USB sound fob (Active low) duplex = 1 ; Duplex 0,1 ; 0 - half duplex ; 1 - full duplex When your done making the changes hit ctrl + o followed by enter then ctrl + x followed by enter. I wasn't able to use DTMF tones to connect to different nodes so I found a command in one of the forum pages to connect through ssh. sudo asterisk -rx "rpt fun 24219 *3172" 24219 is my node so insert your node number, *3172 will connect me to node 172, *3xxxxx will connect you to your node of choice, xxxxx being the node number. If your gonna use the Pi as your repeater controller then your gonna have to modify your rpt.conf file. sudo nano /etc/asterisk/rpt.conf hangtime = 1000 ; squelch tail hang time (in ms) (optional, default 5 seconds, 5000 ms) althangtime = 2000 ; longer squelch tail totime = 180000 ; transmit time-out time (in ms) (optional, default 3 minutes 180000 ms) idrecording = |ixxxxxxx ; cording or morse string see http://ohnosec.org/drupal/node/87 ;idtalkover = |ixxxxxxx ; Talkover ID (optional) default is none see http://ohnosec.org/drupal/node/129 ; See Telemetry section Example: idrecording = rpt/nodenames/24219 idtime = 900000 When your done making the changes hit ctrl + o followed by enter then ctrl + x followed by enter. Change the xxxxxxx to your callsign make sure you keep the |i or it won't identify. After your done making all the changes make sure to restart asterisk by using: sudo service asterisk restart These are all the changes I did to make everything work with my system.   4. Well, it's been not quite a month now since I received a partial refund* for a brand new BCR-40U I purchased back in February. I received the unit in early March and it was bad out of the box. I contacted Bridgecom who instructed me to 'open a ticket'. In fact, they don't do anything until you go through the process of opening a ticket. Then you wait anywhere from a day to a week for a response. I had my suspicions as to where the problem lay and informed Bridgecom that I could, with their approval, crack the cover and diagnose the problem and, that I am not only qualified to do this, but have state of the art test equipment (if required). However, they basically insisted that I send it in to them (at my cost ~$90 USD) I sent it insured of course, but even if I hadn't, it would have been about $50 to ship it back. It turns out, it was a bad duplexer (as I suspected), and so they sent it back and it worked fine, save for yet another issue (I'll get to that). Less than a day later, it stopped working for no apparent reason. This time I decided to at least look at the programming and found that the repair tech left in a test channel and, after I removed it with the software, the repeater started working again. Now to the next problem... One of the first things I found wrong with this repeater is that if you program in a user with DCS on RX, that is the only user you can have, included the sysop/control user. Tone squelch users, you can have as many as you want up to the limit of 23 users/coded squelch per channel. After reading the manual and all of the sales literature, which makes no mention of this limitation, I Contacted Bridgecom (again), and they basically became forthcoming and stated it was a limitation of one of the chips controlling coded squelch system. It is also important to note, that per the instruction manual, the unit IS CAPABLE of multiple DCS users. Indeed, I think it was me pointing out that fact they agree to refund my money. After that last confession and 2 primary failures, I decided enough is enough. You spend good money for a new repeater you expect better. So I requested and received a refund, well, sort of. The refund appears to have been short the tax I paid for the original purchase. Compound that with the fact that I had to pay to return it twice (once for the repair and once for a refund) at a cost to me of just shy of $200, I am out of pocket about $250 just for 'trying' a (brand new) Bridgecom repeater. I'm really sad to have to write this, but others should be warned. I very much wanted to support a small American vendor/manufacturer, but I've never been so disappointed with any vendor/manufacturer. Between the failures, slow service, basically false advertising (the DCS issue) and, having to pay to return (again twice) a unit that was defective from day one, it was just too much. I'm kicking myself today because what I should have done was purchase a used Motorola repeater for less than what I paid for the 'new' BCR-40U. And I am not talking buying off eBay either, there are plenty of mainstream dealers where you can get a used MTR2000 or even a Quantar for less than the BCR-40U. Bottom, line, I have to call the Bridgecom BCR-40U a 'Don't Buy'. Not just for the defective unit, but also their warranty policies which leaves a customer out of pocket. I had to pay for their problems? WTF?? Indeed, given their service/warranty policies, I don't think I'll ever buy anything from them again. Just my own experience, FWIW!
  5. Hello Internet! It has been awhile since I've been playing around in GMRS and I have learned a lot of things over the past few months. I believe I am finally ready to try and create a repeater of my own. My location is favorable as im on top of a hill that oversees the township so I want to give it a go. The ideal use of the repeater is to provide a method of local communication within the township. Im located near and in range of the CSRA Columbia network, but I want something small and local, plus its just a fun project to try and accomplish. I have developed a rough plan and got some equipment I have looked at and will start collecting soon based on how this thread goes. So far I have got 2 Motorola GM300 UHF radios as they were fairly cheap and work well with the repeater interface I got for it. I plan to run theses radios at 25 Watt output. For the repeater interface I chose a Motorola HLN3333B R.I.C.K. as its just plug and play with the GM300's plus it adds the option of remotely shutting down the repeater via DTMF if I desire. I already have covered a power supply so that's good there. I want to get a duplexer and this one offered on MyGMRS looks good but I want some opinions about it from folk who know a bit more first before committing on buying it. If there are other duplexers out there that I should consider, let me know. The antenna I have planned to get is a Tram 1486, also offered by MyGMRS as a option and i'll have this mounted straight above the set up which is inside of the shop. From floor to antenna base, about how tall should I mount the antenna? And for coax, I am leaning towards using 100ft of LMR400 coax cabling. I herd it would get the job done well and its not too expensive. So far that is everything I have on the list. I'll worry about building antenna mounts and a cabinet for the radios later. I know i'm not making something that is perfect and i'm not trying to cover an entire county, but I want something that works well for a starter and to go from there. Im hoping to achieve about 20~ miles and I hope im making the right decisions with some of the equipment I have and plan to get. Let me know what you experts think and help guide me in the right direction. Looking forward to learning more!
  6. I was inquiring on if anyone has a quick spreadsheet on all parts required to get a repeater going for gmrs. Rough estimate on all equipment, parts required...I have also been reading that the KG-100g is repeater capable with another same type radio. Is anyone tried this and what were your results and range with it if so.

  9. Well, this is actually a rewrite of round #2 and is technically round #3 now. I am reserving further judgement pending the outcome of my current situation. The (NEW) repeater came back from Bridgecom with a new, now external duplexer, as I had originally intended when I ordered it and, it initially seems to be just fine. Unfortunately that did not last long. Somewhere over the weekend, just days after putting it back on the air, the repeater died completely, no TX or RX. I can still talk to it with the software and it, from that perspective, is fine. However, there is no longer any receive or transmit. I've opened yet another ticket with their system and I am awaiting a response from Bridgecom. I expect I'll have to again shell out another $50 just to send it back. So this post is just a placeholder/heads up for now, based on what Bridgecom does in response. Personally, I am really pissed off and, extremely disappointed. I chose Bridgecom because of their (apparent) reputation and because it is a USA company. Right now, I'm feeling pretty stupid for that choice. However, as I stated previously, I'll reserve judgement after they have a chance to respond. In my nearly 50 years of working and playing in radio communications, I have never experienced such ridiculous repeat failures of a brand new piece of equipment. Stay Tuned.
  10. I'm setting up my node on the GMRS Network and I'm having a little difficulty. I have a Bridgecom BCR 40DU repeater. I know that I have connected everything correctly because my node shows up on the GMRS map and I'm able to connect to other nodes. I can hear traffic from other nodes and it transmits through my repeater. The issues I'm having is I cannot transmit. When I try transmitting, I notice the TX light doesn't illuminate on the URIx.   11. I set up a repeater with my KG-1000's using an XLT-50 duplexer from BuyTwoWayRadios and the performance was not good. I used a Tram 1486 fed with 55ft of LMR400 with a height of about 50ft. The receive range was only a couple of miles. Thinking about two antennas and separating the two radios by extending the coupling cable that came with the radios. I would like to separate the radios by about 70ft or so. Each end of the house. Question, does anyone have any experience in such a situation, and if so, do you have any info on how far you can extend this connecting cable without affecting the performance of this repeater configuration? I'm thinking this would help greatly reduce the affects of desensing.
  12. I have been around repeaters for most of my adult life but all I had to do was push the talk button on the mike and listen to the speaker in my Sheriff's vehicle. Things have changed. I have a Midland MXT275 and have turned on my Repeater Mode for channel 17 to reach a certain repeater's frequency. The Repeater has a listed output of 462.600mhz with 141.3HZ and a listed input of 467.600mhz with 141.3HZ. I put these CTS codes of 141.3 into my lower channel 17 (frequency 462.600) and my upper Repeater frequency channel 17 (467.600). My Midland Radio CTS number for 141.3HZ is 22: not a problem. My radio indicates all are input. But here is my rookie question so I don't make a mess out in the field. Do I transmit and receive on the same Repeater channel 17 or do I have to scan back and forth between the input and output channel 17 of the repeater. I even think maybe I have to utilize the Monitor mode of the radio to transmit and receive the repeater on the same channel. I just can't find reference in my instructions. Appreciate some guidance.   13. Some have read the other post that I sort of hijacked with my crazy GMRS plans. Guessing some have questioned the validity, my ability, and said " cool story bro". They took anything metal. They even took a door. Not to mention every bit of conduit. I had been in the site 6 months prior and everything that AT&T had there was still in the building. It took 3 very large roll off dumpsters to get it all out of there. So I went to work rewiring, reworking and rehabbing the building. At this point, we have a large AREDN (Amateur Radio Emergency Data Network) with access nodes on all four corners of the tower covering 900 2.4 and 5.8 There is a large ham packet switch network hub in place covering all bands including HF. And of course a GMRS repeater (soon to be more). Not to mention the ongoing projects. A Centracom Gold Elite console system. Several ham repeaters, DMR and analog. I semi serious HF station... More antenna's to be installed in the spring. It's been time consuming, but fun. And the best part is, since it's all private, I can do as much or as little as I feel like on any given day. Specifics on the tower. Height 239 feet to the lightning rod tip. 43 feet from leg to leg. Two decks on top, one is octagon. The lower is square. THe lower deck is 40 by 40 with 4 horns Upper deck we haven't measured, but it's smaller, has 2 horns. Since I always get ask about the horns. They are 12 foot wide and 15 feet tall at the apex of the top. Electrically they are a section of a 24 foot dish. Beam width is 1.5 degrees and the mathematical gain is just under 40 DB for 11 Ghz and 30 something for 6 Ghz. Feel free to ask questions.
  14. Anyone have any experience with Bridgecom and/or their Repeater? I have two questions which, I believe I know the answer, but would like confirmation. I tried calling and even leaving a message and 4 days later they have not responded. That leaves me wondering about the company despite their videos and website. Anyway... Q) The BCR-40U is advertised as 400-470 and so, duplexer aside, is the unit programmable across that range? Q) 'Pandemic" shipping issues aside, the website shows they currently have 4 of these repeaters in stock, but also notes call for 'lead time'. Does anyone know what that actually means? Are they talking about configuration time, is the unit being shipped in from Timbuktu, what? Also, if you have one of these units, what was your order to delivery (ballpark)? As noted, I have called them twice now and left messages with contact information and they simply don't return calls, or at least they don't return my calls. Q.) If you are an owner/operator of one of these units, what is your impression of the unit and/or the company? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

  16. I have a few HT's and local repeaters that I have access to. I'm toying with the idea of setting up my own repeater at my house mainly because it would be "mine" and for the educational purpose. I'm wondering what's the cheapest way to get a repeater up and running at my home? My thought would be I could put an antenna (or 2) in my attic - I could put them outside on a lower roof but I don't think I can ground it adequately (hence the reason for just putting it in the attic), the actual repeater being two base units running a max of 50w. Is there any RF exposure issue to be concerned with at GMRS freq's at 50w? Now I live in an urban area where there are hills, not mountains and simplex to simplex with a KG-805 can get about a mile or two - two if I'm outside. I don't have the ability to erect a large antenna tower...and in reality even if I mounted an antenna outside on the highest point of the roof I couldn't get above the tree line - that's at least another 20-30 feet above the roof of my 2story house. Thoughts - is the cost to do this coupled with the expected performance going to outweigh the learning/fun aspect?

I just put together a controller kit yesterday, the ID-O-Matic IV from Ham Gadgets: http://www.hamgadgets.com/id-o-matic-iv From the name it sounds like just an IDer, but it actually can control a repeater. It has a lot of features for the low price, and is in my opinion all I really need or can use for a GMRS repeater. Works pretty well as a ham repeater too, in fact. You can get this controller already assembled for about $60, but I elected to save $20 by assembling it myself. It's been awhile since I put together a kit anyway, and that's part of the radio hobby for me. It shipped quickly and wasn't missing any parts. It doesn't include a hard copy of the manual; you have to download a pdf from the website. I had already done so in preparation. It went together with no issues, and no magic smoke escaped when I powered it up to test. I haven't tested it with the radios yet. First I have to figure out the programming, which is done via usb with a terminal emulator program. I also have to interface to the radios, which shouldn't be too difficult.
  18. Has anyone used the GMRS V1 to setup as a repeater like what has been done with the Baofeng UV 5R? I am trying to setup a repeater station for ,y grandkids to be able to talk to each other and their parents while camping or why they are riding bicycles in their community. I have Baofeng UV 9R Plus radios. Tried to set these up. Everything works fine. but when I try and access with GMRS-V1, I cant change the Repeater channels to allow for the "-" duplex. When I do it will only receive. . Any help will be appreciated. Thanks Stump
  19. I have a Wouxun KG-UV8D+ and I'm using CHIRP or the Wouxun software to program it. I just can't seem to get it right. The repeater is 462.6000 - Out PL 110.9 - In DPL 712 What I need to know is what gets entered into each column in CHIRP. I don't understand the column abbreviations.

FCC List of Equipment and Services That Pose National Security Threat Released On: Mar 12, 2021 http://www.fcc.gov/document/fcc-list-equipment-and-services-pose-national-security-threat "FCC's Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau publishes a list of communications equipment and services that are deemed a threat to national security, consistent with requirements in the Secure and Trusted Communications Networks Act of 2019" A later link takes you to a document with more detail on Hytera's issues: "Covered Equipment or Services Video surveillance and telecommunications equipment produced or provided by Hytera Communications Corporation, to the extent it is used for the purpose of public safety, security of government facilities, physical security surveillance of critical infrastructure, and other national security purposes, including telecommunications or video surveillance services produced or provided by such entity or using such equipment." Commentary: It looks like Motorola is getting great value for their DC lobbying investments. Some GMRS licensees that use Hytera products (including me) will find it amusing that they have again gone to the courts to kill their most viable competitor. So, instead of providing products that meet their customer's needs, Motorola has found it more cost-effective to pursue the low road. They are getting really lazy - not the same company when it was under the Galvins. For those not having used Hytera's higher-end mobile, portable and repeater products (similar build quality to Motorola in their DMR lines, designed originally for the Chinese police forces, etc.), you will find them to be superior from a feature, capability and ETSI compliance standpoint. Not even close. While I support death to the CCP (our greatest enemy) and the concern over camera equipment, I will give credit to Hytera for their product design efforts, even though they likely lifted some marginally important IP from Motorola (another ongoing litigation issue). As the repeaters have Ethernet connectivity, I can see a concern there that might be mitigated through a simple "air gap". This policy will really kick Hytera's a** in the utility market and elsewhere. They do not manufacturer any P25 products. FCC List of Equipment and Services That Pose National Security Threat:
  21. I finally received my shiny new RT97 portable repeater yesterday. I chose to have them program it in the ham portion of the UHF band, since they don't charge extra for it, nor for tuning the duplexer. I do have the service equipment here in case I ever need to retune the duplexer. So far I'm very pleased with it's performance even though currently it's connected to a tri-band NMO mag mount antenna on a 14' diameter pie pan. I was able to hit the repeater full quieting about 3 miles from my 40 watt mobile. I've read elsewhere that many (including our very own Rich!) have had problems getting the programming software configured properly. After several attempts, I finally discovered that Retevis only allows COM1 through COM20 in their software. On my development computer all COM ports 1 through 22 (save one) are already in use, so the system assigned COM23 to the Prolific programming cable! I noted that COM2 was not already in use, so I had to use the Advance option to re-assign COM23 to COM2. Bingo! Now the darn thing will connect and will allow for read/write operations to take place. I note that the RT97 has 16 channels that may be programmed. Evidently the duplexer they are using will allow +/- 500kHz to pass through adequate signal, so they have pre-programmed the other 15 channels accordingly! This has proved to be a blessing since my primary channel (#1) is 442.975/447.975. The closest repeater on that pair is in Attica, Indiana, nearly 120 air miles from me so I thought that was clearly enough separation to cause no problems, especially since I chose to use 141.3 CTCSS for the input/output tone. Unfortunately, Attica is a DMR repeater and the analog 'machine gun sound' has been coming in loud and clear! So I've moved up 12.5kHz (channel #2) to eliminate the nasty sound... I am intending this portable repeater to be used primarily as part of our ARES group here in NW Indiana, and am anxious to get this outdoors for some range testing!
  22. Hi Folks, By way of introduction, my name is JT (WRKZ907) from Great Neck, Long Island, N.Y. I'm a newbie to this hobby and just recently purchased a Radioddity GM-30 GMRS Radio, while awaiting delivery of my Wouxun KG-905G's to arrive. I figured I'd get my feet wet learning how to use the GM-30, which seems to have a rich set of features, one in particular I would have liked to have seen on the KG-905G, which is the NOAA monitoring. Anyway - as I stated, I'm totally new to this, and I'm doing my best to ramp up to speed on my own, but I find interacting with others has always been a great way for me to learn things, and in particular - trying to understand how to program the tones for repeaters with the Radioddity GM-30, both manually and/or via the software for the device. Don't know if anyone out there in myGMRS last would be willing to help mentor this newbie & provide some assistance in helping me come up to speed and understand how this repeater stuff works, and would be willing to spend a little time with me, ideally someone in the Queens/Nassau area would be great, so we could possibly communicate together on air, but I'm happy to accept any assistance from you fine folks if your available & willing. Thanks in advance for any input or resources you folks can point me to or provide.   23. Hey. I was trying to save two repeaters in my radio the other day and it didn't work so well. I have all 8 repeater channels in memory with freuqncies and tones saved. When I tried to add a second repeater output which was already taken up by one of the other repeater channels, I tried to create a new frequency line using CHIRP, and it saved like all the other did, however, when I go to transmit, the radio doesn't work there. I just get a dead key. I assume because on a GMRS dedicated radio, we only get channels 15 to 22 to use. So what do you do if you need more channels? Do I end up having to delete one and enter the other just to use that one? Is there no way to save the same repeater multiple times when the channels are all used up? If that's the answer, that we can't, well OK. I am curious if anyone else has run into this and what you do?
  24. Hey Guys, I am part of a new group of guys that is forming in Oklahoma, the Oklahoma GMRS Club. you can find us here : http://okgmrs.club. We are looking into setting up a mesh of GMRS repeaters through out our state and linking into the MYGMRS Network. I was wondering What equipment y'all are using for your Repeaters, Antenna's, Coax, etc. And how you linked them up to the MYGMRS network, also interested in creating a HUB node for the GMRS network that all of our remote sites can connect to and effectively cover the entire area. Also any tips or tricks on Antenna Access would be highly advantageous, we don't have many mountains around us so it takes a few more repeaters to cover a decent base area.
