iOS App Beta Testers

After much delay, we are ready to begin testing the iOS version of the myGMRS app!

We're looking for anyone with an iPhone 6 or newer who is able to join the test program and provide feedback on how the app is working. If you know how to take screenshots and share them, you might be able to help us.

What kind of iPhones do you guys have? I only have an old iPhone 5 kicking around, so I can't test anything newer.

I added you guys to the tester list. I believe you should receive an email for the Apple TestFlight program. This is new to me so some trial and error may be necessary.

Please take any screenshots of weird behavior and either post them here or email to support@mygmrs.com.

Here's the release notes so you know what to expect:

App should be fully functional with the following possible exceptions:

1. Some app icons may not be the myGMRS radio tower logo, but might be the default Cordova icon from the library we use. Let me know if any default icons are noticed.

2. At least on the iPhone 5, the top of the login form is blocked by the header bar. Not sure if this happens on all devices. If it does happen and you can't enter your username, try clicking Login anyway and the error message will push the username and password form fields low enough to be usable.

The default app I'm referring to is this:

Thanks everyone!

Looks like Apple has to review the beta version before you guys can test. In the mean time I've sent you PMs with a link to download the .ipa file, which can be dragged and dropped onto your iPhone in the left panel of iTunes when your device is connected. Let me know if you have any problems.

If it doesn't allow you to, I may need your device's UDID to whitelist the device for testing, which can be looked up using iTunes as well. PM me your UDID if this is the case. Here's the guide:

Anyone with a working iPhone newer than the iPhone 5 who wants to donate to the cause can send it to me, so I have something more modern to test on. Otherwise I'll have to find something on eBay for dirt cheap.  :D

Does this work with iPads yet?  I have a Mini 4 and a Mini 1 that I can test with.  If I can scare up my old iPhone 4 and 5, they're on the table too.

For now I think I built the app as iPhone only, but I can do an iPad build later. The app isn't optimized for all the extra screen real estate but it should work in theory.

If you want, send me the UDIDs of the other 2 iPhones if you still have them. I'll add them as testing devices.

I see the invites went out for TestFlight and some of you have already downloaded the app. I'm seeing GPS issues that are intermittent on the Repeaters page and the Map. Sometimes it loads, and sometimes it doesn't. I thought that was ironed out already but I'll have to keep looking into it. For me, I have to hit the home button and then the permission prompt will come up asking to use your location. I used to have the problem on the iOS simulator but then it was fixed. Kinda strange...

Anyway, send me any screenshots of any weird behavior.

I have it installed on an iPad and iPhone and both seem to work well. No icon issues. However, as I am outside the US at the moment (Italy) I am unable to test the location related services.

Thanks for the feedback. No issues with the login form being blocked by the logo banner/header? I do see that on the iPhone 5 but every other page is perfect.

You can test the GPS by going to the map. It should acquire your location and zoom to your rough location. Obviously you won't see any repeaters nearby, but it'll prove that it's able to locate you. If it still stays on the US view indefinitely, then it's not getting your location. That's where hitting the home button and jumping right back into the app worked for me.

No issues with login—though the signup info is blocked by the keyboard, really not an issue. The map would not switch to my locale until I did as you suggested, at which point I was prompted to allow the app use gps info, and then it worked fine. However, in retrospect I probably should have been automatically prompted for gps permission when the map first opened.

Also, for some reason I see 31 repeaters (yellow ball) located below Ghana. Clicking on that icon breaks the maps- amusing the yellow ball to appear in the middle of an u es capable blue sea. Clicking the menu icon and selecting any fu cation other than the map gets me out and I can then load the map and it works until/unless I try to look for a repeater near Ghana

I like how TestFlight sends a message from a screen shot, but I ne issue I see from using it is...I have no idea what I have sent in already or issues others may have had that I may not have noticed.

Does it automatically update the app from TestFlight as changes are made or has there not been any updates since we started Beta testing?

I haven't had the chance to rebuild the app, I've been swamped with work (my 9-5) taking over my free time again. Possibly this weekend I will have a new build out on TestFlight.

Seems like the main issues are GPS not always working (having to close the app or tap on something outside of the app for it to get a fix), and some icon issues when opening the app. The GPS issue is that iOS doesn't prompt you for permission when I'm asking for the location. For some reason, you need to leave the app for iOS to realize it should ask you (not my doing). I saw it was a known issue with Cordova but I'll have to try a different fix than the one I tried.

I added jeremyb66 and mainehazmt to the testers list. You guys should have received emails from the Apple TestFlight program.
