GMRS transmission/receiving problem

Hello everyone, I have a new guy problem. I am using a Tera tr-505 to transmit to a Midland base camp xt511. I can't get the 505 to transmit until the base camp transmits first. When I transmit with the 505 there is a hum on the base camp and thats it. If I hit the push to talk on the base camp then my 505 can transmit to the base camp no problem. I odd thing, if I turn both radios off then on the 505 will transmit to the base camp, once I change channels no go. I must have touched a setting or something simple. If anyone can steer me in the right direction that would be great. Thanks.

Possible problem #1 - units too close together. solution: they won't work in the same room with each other due to overload. Move them apart by 100 feet or more.

Possible problem #2 - CTCSS or DCS settings do not match. - "Private Codes" are NOT the same number on each unit. Solution: Get a chart for each unit, and set them for the same CTCSS frequency or the same DCS code - watch for normal or inverted codes.

Possible problem #3 - Tera unit on charger, using speaker-mic to make a "pretend" base station. - Solution: Take it off from the charger base.  The thing is meant to run on its battery.  It WON'T transmit properly while sitting in the charger stand, and will transmit a loud 120 Hz buzz, if it transmits at all.

I'm sorry. I should have mentioned earlier that I had turned off the codes on the base camp and had used the programming cable to turn off the codes on the tera. I tried moving units further apart. I didn't have it on the charger. Could I have messed up something with the program cable on the the tera? There was a features screen and a side button screen, also a a vox screen which, I didn't mess with. If someone is familiar with these radios and has some advice please post something. Thanks.

I read the specs on the Tera, and what I've found is the thing is set up by default to scan when on channel 16. It is likely that it is in scan mode, and when you transmit, it will stop on whatever channel it was last going past.  If you key up the Midland first, the Tera will stop on the frequency it hears, and stay there for a few seconds, thus you can then transmit back to the Midland.

The frequency chart for the Tera does not line up with the Midland.  Channels 1-7 will be the same, but on the Tera, when on channel 8 or above, you need to add 7 to the channel number to match the Midland.  In other words, if the Tera is set to Channel 11, you will be on 462.625, which is channel 18 on the Midland.  If you are trying to use channel 16 on the Midland, then set the Tera to channel 9, and you should be able to talk.

Thank you so much for anwsering. I'm aware of the scanning feature on both radios. I was attempting to make them work on the lower channels. Niether radio was in scan mode. I am also aware of the fact that the Tera has no FRS frequencies. I removed all the privacy codes on the tera with the programming software. I turned the privacy codes off on the Midland as well. If I turn the radios on when on the same freq. I can transmit with the Tera to the Midland no problem. If I then turn the radios to a different freq. I can no longer transmit first with the Tera. I must transmit 1st with the Midland and then I can transmit fine with the Tera. Now when the radios have had the frequencies changed and I try to transmit with the Tera, the Midland does not show show RX on the screen. I can hear a hum from the Midland, but no sound and no RX is present. I guess this must be something simple, but for the life of me I can't get my head around the problem. Please, if you read the post, give me your ideas and I'll try them out in hopes of finding the solution. Thanks again for your help.

At this point, you need to bring in a third radio to do some A-B-X testing.  See if you can borrow a known-good FRS handheld from a friend or neighbor, or just buy a cheap one from a discount store.  One of your radios has a problem, and I do not yet have enough information to determine which one.

Hmmm my Motorola Repeater on GM300 and M120 is not working and I can't hear go farther at 20 miles. Something on my repeater system has brought back in 1 mile local repeater. All I knew my repeater should be correct frequency and duplexer.

I think I put something wrong programming on Motorola RSS GM300/M120 software on DOS program mode

GM300- RX Mode

RX: 462.6500
TX:462.6500

or

RX: 462.6500
TX: BLANK

M120- TX Mode
RX: 467.6500
TX:467.6500

or

RX: 467.6500
TX: BLANK

Can you tell me which is the correct frequency to programming and make long distance? Please let me know.

Thanks,

Captain Randy

I’m not expert but should the RX machine be

RX: ###.####

TX: blank

And the TX machine be

RX: blank

TX: ###.#####

?
