New GMRS User in Pittsburgh, PA

Hi all,

I am a new GMRS user in Pittsburgh PA. I would love to test my Midland MTX400 but don't really know how to hit a repeater with it. I understand that I need to be on the repeater channel and dial in the correct squelch (please excuse my ignorance of technical terms.) But how do I get anyone to give me the right DCS code? I've requested 2 repeaters near me but haven't heard back.

I would love to be able to just see if I can hit anything from my location but haven't had any luck at all so far.

All I've been able to pick up is a couple low power transmissions (FRS?)

Any and all advice / comments would be greatly appreciated!

Ah Pittsburgh, Home of Anthrocon. We are hoping to take over your city in July, though with this virus stuff it may not happen :(

As for your repeater issue. MyGMRS only shows 1 repeater out in Butler that you might be able to hit. If you are finding other repeaters you may have to first identify the repeater/owner to try and get permission. Another way to do it is to "guess" the code and key up. Either they will be accepting and nice, or a dick. A good code to try is 141.3 which is the "GMRS travel tone." Usually open repeaters will use this tone so anyone can connect.

Short of that, you'll have to look around for local GMRS clubs or groups as they may be able to give you more guidance.

Hello from Beaver County. I was into GMRS a while back and got away from it for a while. I just got back into it. Only have some frs/gmrs radios at the moment, but I have a Midland MXT115 coming later this week.

As far as repeaters, I recall being able to hit the local REACT repeater in Beaver County. This was probably about 10 years ago, or so. I don't recall the frequency or tones at the moment, but when I get my new radio set up, I'm going to try to make contact again.
