Hello all! New to GMRS and would like to see if anyone has any experience with the Wouxun KG-UV8H or the Tera TR 590 radios?

I am looking for a good hand held for GMRS and understand these radios may not be Part certified. Any other recommendations are appreciated. Not looking for CCR but nothing to break the bank as I am a retiree. Thanks!

No experience with either unit but I would take the Woxun KG-UV6X over the 8X as the 6X, like the Tera TR-590 is an FCC registered Part 90 radio.

Thanks for the info, I need to keep the Part certifications in mind.

Part 90 radios aren't really legal in Part 95 but the general consensus is the FCC tacitly allows it as the technical requirements are stricter than required for GMRS/FRS.

Good to know. I would like a radio I can see the freq I am using or at least a screen I can look at.

I've been working with Wouxun to develop a new "Pro" GMRS radio. It's currently pending FCC Certification now. It's based on the KG-UV9P (with firmware and calibration tweaks) and will be the best GMRS radio ever, with dual superhet receivers and hi power. There's a waitlist if you're interested: https://bit.ly/BSRKGUV9G

Note: This device has not been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission. This device is not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased, until authorization is obtained. FCC Certification in progress! :)

If you are going for a Part 90 radio then go with a 2nd hand Motorola, Kenwood, Icom, Vertex Standard, etc... just don't believe the hype about those cheap China radios (CCR), Oh, and to be clear, a superhet without proper front end is just worthelss too...  those radios are just expensive trash.

The superhet buzzword is just used to mislead customers by sleazy salesperson like bsmark. Why? b/c the top of the line Motorola XPR7550e uses a direct conversion receiver, not a superhet, and that direct conversion receiver smokes every other superhet brand portable I have, even the Motorola XPR 6550, which uses a superhet with a proper front end, and still no match for the XPR7550e.... So, my unsolicited advice is: don't waste your money on that piece of trash, which btw, its just a rebadged piece of crap radio made 5 years ago. For 189 you can get yourself a real radio like a Motorola XTS3000 UHF that will draw rings around any turd made in China, and moreso when someone just came here to post claiming they are "working with Wouxun" snake oil.

If you decide you don't like that radio, good luck ditching that Wouxun derelict, nobody will want to touch it for what you ask for it... so you won't recoup your money, been there, done that, whereas something like an XTS3000 will hold its value rather well if you decide to ditch it, sometimes you might even be able to flip it for a few bucks gain. There are lots of members in the forum that can and will help you get a radio like that working...

Its your money, tho...

Here is an XTS3000

So it is less then a year from your post and wanted to know what radio you picked...  I going sit for my Ham test the end of May and have a KG-805G and 905G for GMRS and looking at the KG-UV8H for a Ham radio which will only monitor GMRS and can not transmits on GMRS.

So just wanted to know what you have discovered.

The Tera TR-505 is their GMRS radio. I have had a pair of them for four years now, and they work well, and have held up well. At the time I got them, there were not a lot of options in decent part 95 radios. Now there are more. I am still happy with them though.

I have some 505's as well, used mostly for camping for the kids to use. I like having a screen to look at so I use other radios.

I admit I have one of those. The radio hardware is ok. The programming software sucks. I’m tired of the bugs. They fix something then the next version it’s buggered up again, or something else is now broke. I haven’t touched mine in over 6 months.

I don't know enough about radios to notice any bugs. I listen to group talk sometimes on Sunday nights but don't talk. I do use it at work though and haven't had any problems.
