I've found a repeater in my area and got the okay to use it (Sherman 675). Problem is, I'm not getting any answers to my call outs. I'm almost positive I'm connected to the repeater, so we're okay there. I was just wondering if there is anyone in my area involved in GMRS. If you are, let me know and perhaps we can arrange a time to shoot the breeze. I still have a lot to learn. mbrun Posted November 6, 2020 Report Share Posted November 6, 2020 The time commitment of a VE conducting the online versions of the testing appears to be quite high. 3 people per person per test. Ordinarily there are 3 VE required for a single testing session of perhaps 6-24 candidates. I could not conclude that the online tests were anything more than 3:1, meaning a much greater personal commitment of the VE to conduct tests. I personally was not going to put the VE through that and waited for the in-person group opportunity to open up. In-person sessions are happening in the Cincinnati and Dayton Ohio areas. I'm using Ham Radio Crash Courses videos on YouTube. You shouldn't have to pay anybody. There's free resources all over the internet. Our club is still doing in person testing, socially distanced in a parking deck this month. We are going to online for weather reasons only starting next month. There are as mentioned previously many such places, including the flagship ARRL website http://arrl.orgThey are using the actual question pool from which the questions will be asked. The FCC places a great deal of trust in the integrity of the volunteer examiners, which frankly is truly remarkable. Back in the ancient days my dad and I had to drive from Ft Myers, FL down to the Miami FCC Field Office to take our tests. Because of the distance, we had to sit for all of the Elements for everything up to General Class, plus the code test. It was an exhausting but rewarding day!
