A couple of questions

Hi All,

 

I am a total newbie, having some trouble with a couple of things

 

- I can hear some local chatter on 462.600 but they do not copy me at all. Is this because I have it setup with a wrong TX PL and no RX PL? Will radios receive all transmissions when no RX PL specified?

 

- I am trying to use a local repeater to no avail. I setup the freq and shift and PL and can key it up and it responds, but my transmission is never relayed to other handsets. I've used another repeater before and it worked fine, just not this time... could I be missing something?

A few quick things, if you have the 462.600 simplex channel set for no PL/DPL then you will hear all chatter regardless of what code they are using.  So when you attempt to return the conversation their recievers set for a PL/DPL will not hear you. 

 

Second and I get this many times with my repeater system.  Some members love to test to see if they can "hit" the repeater but never actually try an audio check.  Hitting it and being heard are two different things.   So it appears that if you are "hitting" it you have the proper PL codes in/out because you can detect your own signal.  It seems you just need more power, elevation, the basics to get that audio to be detected.  Putting your HT's too close to one another may also cause a situation of temporary desense.   Try putting them in different locations within the house or outside, at least 20 feet away.

Welcome to the MyGMRS forum.    Looks like Billy and I were posting at the same time....

 

(1) Unless your own CTCSS or DSC codes match what the TX and RX codes are set to in the other units, they most likely will not hear you.  If you do not program in an RX code, you will receive everything on that frequency within range.

 

(2) Some repeater owners use different INPUT and OUTPUT codes so unauthorized users may find it difficult to bootleg the system.  If you are keying up the system and you have your RECEIVING radio set to receive the same code as what it takes to key the repeater, you may wish to use a receiver for testing that has NO RX code in it. If you hear yourself that way, you will have to find out from the repeater owner what OUTPUT CODE is programmed into his repeater and set your own receiver programming accordingly. A regular scanner might work for that no code test. Also, many imported radios have a CTCSS / DCS capture mode that will monitor a frequency and tell you which code is being transmitted by that monitored system.

The repeater has both in and out codes set to 110.9, which I have programmed into my radios.

 

If I set the RX code then I can't even hear the repeater acknowledgement. If I clear the RX PL I can hear it just fine, but my second radio does not receive my voice. I'm very close to the repeater....

It works! Apparently I need to key it up, release, and then start talking AFTER I hear the repeater open up! Newb

Some repeaters, especially some that are slow to respond to input codes, do that. I remember one locally that took a second and a half to fire up once it detected an input signal.

Shouldn't that be  "  110.9  "   not, 110.09 ?     If that was just a misprint and you have the  110.9  in your radio RX and TX, perhaps a message to the repeater owner might net some results - perhaps something was changed recently and it hasn't been updated in whatever data source you are looking at.

Well, aside from that one time when it worked, I could not make it work on the road anymore... gave up, used simplex instead, lost contact on many occasions but at least it worked

Can you share with us which repeater you were trying to access and if it is registered here at the main MyGMRS website?

OK - Thanks... we have some members in that general area who may have suggestions. The repeater is listed in our main database and access info can be found in the repeater search engine for MA repeaters.  The owner's first name is Ralph and his contact info is in the database listings.

 

Have you tried the ALTERNATE CTCSS for that system (traveler's) to see if that works any better?
