I saw that some people are 3-D printing mounts for the IC-2730A control head. Has anyone seen them for sale? Icom is out of their minds with their mounts and pricing!

Thanks but, you still need the MBA - 2 or MBA-5 to work with those mounts.

It rankled a bit but I broke down and bought the bracket for the body, and the plate/magnets for the control head. Definitely shop around, as the prices vary. There is a kit with both mounts (bracket/plate) for cheaper than buying each individually. I want to say I got mine from the antenna farm.

That said, for actually holding the control head, it's currently on a magnetic phone mount suction cup mounted to my glass top desk. In the car I have a cupholder power supply with a gooseneck magnetic phone holder that should work perfectly.

Yeah, that pi$$ed me off too.... $250 radio, $100 to be able to secure it.  My hunch... they're competing with Anytone, Baofeng, et al, on the price point of the radio.  The Anytone is $225.... for an added $25 I get Icom quality... it's a no-brainer.  Icom makes up the difference in the other stuff needed to make the radio usable.

In the end, I did the same thing as you... just buy the right thing.  Everything that I found, 3rd party, looked like junk.

It's an Icom thing though.  The 2730 isn't unique on this.  You bought a radio, they sold you a radio.  Peripheral hardware .... that's not what you bought, you bought a radio.  Mention to any HAM that you're buying a new Icom, and you will hear "watch out".  If it's not listed as "in the box", don't assume that it's in the box.

That's not quite limited to Icom. Yaesu, Connect Systems, even Anytone are all the same way. FTM400 has a head bracket that is useless, connect systems has a method to detach, but you have to configure the remote bracket yourself. In the end, there isn't possibly a way to put a single bracket in the box that would work for even 30% of the users, so they don't.

Connect Systems CS800 and CS800D radios are simple. Just remove the front bracket from the radio and use it as the remote head mounting bracket.

Even with that, I still had to make a bracket to attach the head bracket to the car.

Ah, I see. I got lucky and my control head & mount slid into an existing pocket below the factory AM/FM/Cassette radio.
