uniden278 Posted December 13, 2014 Report Share Posted December 13, 2014 Hello all, Twenty-something new father and a newly licensed GMRS user here in eastern Mass. I'm in the process now of selling off some unused radio and other various electronic equipment to fund a repeater setup. I've been monitoring the repeater channels... there isn't much repeater use in my area and I've only heard a couple of other users that appear to be using simplex only. I've used CB for many years growing up and I'm an avid scannerist and commercial radio user for my two public safety jobs. Just looking to learn as much as I possibly can about repeaters, radio etiquette and pretty much just the lay of the land before I expand my radio usage to amateur... hoping to take my tech in the spring. I have a teenage daughter and is also an experience :-) I started in GMRS about a year ago and shortly thereafter got my technician license. Curious as to why you want to put up a GMRS repeater? I had thought of that also, but ultimately never have. Talk with family, friends (licensed), neighborhood or just plain old geekiness. I thought of doing it for family and geekiness myself! remember talking to someone that I had started noticing cool areas where one could mount an antenna for wide coverage. I started off as a ham…then got into GMRS (I probably use GMRS more than I do anything else FM). Repeaters are fairly simple. Receiver, transmitter, controller (optional depending on setup), cables to interconnect everything, a duplexer and antenna (or two antennas to remove the duplexer from the equation). A lot of people here tend to start out with mobile based repeaters. A couple of UHF surplus radios and some stuff to interconnect them. I hear people now talking on GMRS without any ID, but its clear its a repeater with a roger beep and tail, once they stop talking, the signal does dead, for days at a time. i have all 8 ch scanning 24/7 while i'm at home, and sometimes i use a voice recorder at night to see who's on... not much, but then out of the blue, some guys testing out a repeater, i can hear prefectly well. there is only 1 GMRS repeater in town that Id's every hour or so, except at night, i found the owner and got permission, which is great, but i still want to build my own for short range with my kids. [ Subpart (e) as an example ]If transmissions aren't being properly IDed, then the repeater needs an IDer. So if everyone properly ID's, then one is not required. Which is what makes GMRS repeaters so much easier (and cheaper) to build. The only real reason I'd put an IDer on a GMRS repeater, is for a private repeater used by those covered under a single license. I'm actually working on a repeater for my family and one for my friend's (who happens to have a family run farm). That reminds us to id in the proper amount of time. The morse id only says "time to id." LOL It is so busy that it ids all the time. We have well over 30 licenses on it and most of us are hams too. I can just talk to someone in my family, using the same ID, and just let the repeater do the ID? More specifically, does that mean that I dont have to force the kids to ID every 15 minutes, i can just say it once or maybe not at all if the repeater does the IDing? What channel would I use if I need help for any reason ? I will be doing some Kayaking this summer and want to bring the radios for fun and in case of emergency. Any help with this is appreciated.
