In light of the past three weeks worth of severe weather in the US, the Moderator staff here at the Forum would just like to remind all licensed GMRS simplex users, GMRS repeater owners and ham operators to formulate an emergency communications plan for your area and to do occasional drills for preparedness - just as Public Safety and Emergency Operations Centers do.  These drills can give you insight into any problems that may occur and to correct those issues before the communications systems need to be used in an actual emergency.

Please reply in this thread if you already have a plan in place or if you need some pointers. We can all learn from the experiences of others and may be able to pick up ideas that can be implemented in our own disaster response planning.

Thank you.

I agree you can never be too prepared for an emergency ,keep all of your portables charged ready to go and having a battery back up for repeaters is a good idea  in case you need them during a power outage but only use your repeater as needed to conserve battery life, you never know how long the power could be out.

Simplex works for several miles and will conserve battery life of your repeater, everyone stay safe,be prepared for weather and make sure you have enough food and water to last several days if needed along with a supply of batteries and good flashlights.

This would be a good time for those who have generators to get them out dust them off and do a test run with them and buy at least 2- 5 gal containers of gas and if you do not use it in a month put it in you vehicle since the great ethanol gas we have now  only has about a month shelf life ....William

So when you talk about generators.. there are quite a few out there.. What are folks thoughts on the different types of fuel generators. I am seeing now that they have LP ones and was thinking maybe the life of the parts might be better vs gas the deteriates the plastic parts and floats in carbs. Thoughts?

Gas and LP Generators are good for temporary outages, but if you need long run times and 100% duty cycle, I would go with diesel. either way if you use the generator to charge battery's then it does not have to run 24hours. Keep in mind depending on the cause of the outage, any fuel may be hard to come by and or expensive. you may need precious metals or something to trade for fuel if the dollar becomes worthless.

You mean, like today?  I just read that two female Democrat members of the House of Representatives have proposed that a National Park be established on the MOON to preserve the artifacts from all the Apollo landings. Why not?  They're wasting all our hard earned tax dollars on all their other nonsense, so just add this one to the National Debt.............

they who? what "all other nonsense" as I see it the majority of the money was already squandered on credit fighting two unlawful wars, we continue to speak of repealing the ACA when it's the USA Patriot ACT that needs to be repealed. we have allowed our complacency to price ourselves directly out of competitiveness, we are no longer relevant and the US dollar is on it's way out as a world currency. This all started long before the current administration. just like the wars, the wheels of debt and spending were set into place long before this president. and now, the national debit. It is actually falling for the first time in over 14 years. Yes unemployment is still high, thanks to corporate leaders that continue austerity in an attempt to make the current administration fail. and when we really need republican leaders to work on our economy, the'y instead call for the repeal of the ACA, that "I directly benefit from" New legislation that affects women s body's and lives, anti Gay right's legislation. where is our GOP when we need them? Naming new post offices.
