I am licensed in amateur radio call W5CKB and GMRS WQUU332. I have been told however that amateur radio is for two way communication and not one way. My question is can I transmit on an amateur radio frequency (2 meter) to my family which are all covered under my GMRS license and have them listen on that channel and transmit back on a GMRS frequency that I in turn listen in on. You have to be within range of their GMRS radio to hear them, and they have to be within range of your 2M to hear you. If you try to accomplish this through someone's repeater in either or both directions, you'll probably incur the wrath of the owner(s) quite promptly. WQWI871 Posted April 24, 2017 Report Share Posted April 24, 2017 I suppose I can understand if one may be using a mobile unit that supports amateur and GMRS frequencies, but, doesn't have an amateur license to legally transmit on amateur frequencies and can only legally transmit on GMRS frequencies because of the callsign supporting multiple residents, but, an amateur repeater may be needed for them to receive the transmit due to range, power, or, other factors of GMRS. The sender (amateur user) may have the ability to receive the transmit of the GMRS user depending on equipment and factors. I'm not implying anything, I'm just stating "one" possible reason I can understand why someone would need to do that if they did. Or, similar situations.
