Quick Question

Hi All,

I am really new to all of this, so of course, I have questions. I have my ZA - General Mobile Radio (GMRS) license, am I allowed to access and use the repeaters in my area as long as I either have permission or access an open repeater? I am seeking my HA license, however, I am still reading over the material. I should be taking the test next Friday evening...if all goes according to plan. Just wanted to know if I can get in on the chatter I hear while connected to the area repeater.

Thanks in advance for the information!

Christopher- Welcome to the Forum.

There are at least three repeater systems in or near Houston.  Please log in to our main Repeater listing site for access details. Two of the systems listed are OPEN and one requires permission. The open systems are for all GMRS operators with an active license. The repeaters that require permission from the owners have contact information in their info listing.

[Note: The Moderators at MyGMRS do not have current operational status of any systems listed at the main website. The listings there are up to the owners to manage and update, so any data there may or may not be accurate currently.]

In addition to what was specified earlier, that goes for the GMRS repeaters. Not the amateur repeaters. You can listen in on amateur repeaters, but, no amateur license means no amateur transmit. I think the last portion of your comment was kind of unclear if you were asking about using both, or, asking about just GMRS and casually mentioning amateur.

You can only transmit on frequencies for which you hold a license. Listen to ham all you want, but no transmitting until you get your ticket.
