  1. I know on the HA1G, if you quickly press the # key/Lock button once on the key pad then it will switch to single channel on the display. I’m not sure about the NR30
  2. I actually talked to a group last night on my local repeater with my handheld. That was pretty interesting
  3. Thanks everyone, all the tips and advice is much appreciated more than I can express.
  4. Thank you @Borage257
  5. I have no set distance or destination in mind. I just wanted to try this type of setup, learn about it as I’m doing it and just see how far I can reach and what I could pick up. If I reached out and picked up a repeater (other than the one close to me), another ht or other radios then that would be great. If I don’t hit anything then I will keep learning and tuning things. I’m not trying to go so fast that I overwhelm myself. That’s why I want to learn what my ht can do before moving to a different type of radio. Plus I’m just enjoying it. Don’t be sorry, you gave me a lot of information that I did not know and greatly appreciate that. Also, I am about 10 minutes from the beach so there are plenty of open areas. The yagis being very directional was about all I knew about the yagi antennas until you gave me more info about them. This is why I like posting on here because everyone here has been helpful. Thanks for the reply & info.
  6. Well, I don’t really have a particular set range. I am new to GMRS and I am just wanting to try these types of setups to see how far I can reach, to learn more about these setups & about GMRS. Thanks for the reply and info, I will check it out.
  7. Hey everyone, I’ve got another newbie question if you all don’t mind. I want to try something with my handheld just for fun. I received two retevis ailunce ha1g radios as a gift and I like them as a beginner radio. I would like to get an adapter, coax cable (if needed) and a small antenna to attach to my handheld. I’ve seen handhelds being used like this but I need help as to what type of adapters for my antenna port, cable & antenna to maybe try. I’ve seen handhelds being used with yagi antennas but if I understand correctly the yagi antennas have to be very precise as to the direction of the repeaters. Please correct me if I’m wrong and would like advice/tips as what to try. Thanks!
  8. lol that’s alright, I’m gonna enjoy exploring this rabbit hole. Thanks!
  9. Thanks everyone! I’ve still got a lot of the basics to figure out but making my first contact just boosted my interest, excitement & motivation to learn more. Thanks again everyone!
  10. I got my GMRS license a few weeks ago and received my handheld radios a few days ago & started setting them up (still learning & trying to set them up lol). Well, I reached a local repeater and made my first contact. It was exciting to me so I just thought I’d share that. Thanks everyone for helping me with my newbie questions.
  11. Thank you everyone for all the replies, the advice, the help and friendly welcomes. I’m going to look into the suggestions everyone mentioned so I greatly appreciate it all.
  12. Thank you for the reply and advice, it is much appreciated. I have two Retevis HA1G GMRS radios coming. I was thinking about a mag base antenna to go with a mobile for my car but just unsure which one. I am trying not dive into it too fast because I would like to learn all I can. I would like to do things the right way, understand what I’m doing and not just grab a radio and jump on the air. I’d like to learn what I can, set up everything correctly and possibly make some friends along the way. Some things have already seemed a little overwhelming but I’m still excited to get into it and to be here. Thanks again!
  13. Thanks, I’m excited to be here!
  14. Thanks for the replies everyone & I apologize for that wide open question with lack of detail as to what I had in mind. My idea for a mobile radio is that I’m real new to GMRS so I was thinking budget between $400-$500 on the mobile itself then add in the cost for an antenna. I didn’t want to go too deep right now while I’m still learning everything about radios and GMRS. I have plenty of room in my mid suv for the radio & was even wondering if I could connect it to its own battery instead of the car battery. I’ve got handheld GMRS radios on the way that were a gift. I live on the east coast and for now I was just wanting to use the mobile to reach around town, back to my house while around town & a 40 mile or so radius if possible. Of course I plan on using these handhelds & mobile as another way of communication, to talk to new people, improve my knowledge and upgrade a little later when I know more of what I’m doing & what to look for. But I’m still new so please bare with me for not knowing the range, knowledge & details of GMRS radios yet. Thanks everyone!
  15. Hey everyone, i am new to GMRS so forgive me if this is a burnt-out question. Can anyone give me some suggestions on a good mobile GMRS radio and antenna? Thanks!
  16. Hey WRJZ939, thanks for that review on the HA1G radios. I am new to GMRS and a family member just ordered this radio for me as a gift. I'm looking forward to testing them out. Btw, i'm also a weirdo as far as finding things sometimes like you found with the NOAA as well lol.
  17. Hey everyone, I just got my GMRS license aprox 2 weeks ago, I'm new to GMRS radios and everything that includes. I am excited to be here as this is all new to me and just recently had a family member to order me two GMRS radios as a bday gift. I don't really know too much about GMRS radios so i hope they will be good enough to start out on. Everyone have a good day!
