  1. Noise filter was ineffective. Dang!
  2. Doesn't have to be perfect, just tolerable to those on the other end. I don't want to be "That Guy"! Thanks again, Steve.
  3. Having a heckuva time tracking down the cause of electrical whine when transmitting on my Midland 575. My final attempt will be a noise filter and it should arrive in a couple days. If it does not work, is it possible to use an isolated power source like another battery or a Jackery Portable Power Supply to power the radio? Something that can be charged when radio is not in use. The idea of pulling over every time I want to transmit just doesn't seem too appealing.
  4. Alternator was 17 years old and I found one at a higher amperage so I went ahead and replaced it. I grounded the antenna and felt that 3 bolts in the alternator should provide a good ground. I may strap it too. Ferrite beads on Alternator to battery cable, radio power supply, coax, and a few nearby power leads. I was going to place the chokes on the LED headlights as well, but there is no interference when I turn them on. It's only when the engine runs. The spark plugs and wires are about a year old. Plugs are resistor type and the cables are not the very top of the line, but the better of the in-store choices. Same whine. I ordered a filter today as a least resort.
  5. Grounded the antenna and still have the noise. Next step, new alternator
  6. As an update, the ferrite beads were attached to alternator main as well as the radio power at each end on both. Ground is attached about 2 feet from radio at the seat mount. Still have that irritating whine on transmitting only.
  7. You guys are great. Thank you!
  8. Well, apparently I am a liar, or senile (most likely) I put everything back together and set one of my HTs out where I could here it. Terrible noise! Tried it again after a short break and no noise. Clear as a bell. I then realized this time engine was off. So I was incorrect answering earlier about that. My apologies! So... I need to fix the engine noise. Researching that now. Thank you all!!
  9. No, just the one mobile and 2 HTs
  10. I have a ground plane kit as it was previously mounted on the fiberglass roof. No Christmas lights.
  11. Thanks! I appreciate the input.
  12. In my driveway where I always do my checks. Odd thing I just remembered is that, at the same time, I was only hitting the repeater about half of the time. When I did, is when the other guys would tell me it was a strong signal but a lot of whine or interference. I installed the roof rack yesterday and relocated the antenna to the back corner of the rack. I added a bulkhead connector, so I checked all of the cables/components between radio and antenna. No shorts anywhere and continuity was good. None of the power components were altered at all.
  13. Engine was off. This is a brand new issue. Never had a problem before. Radio connected direct to battery.
  14. Will the radio circuitry produce a continuity reading at the SO 239 connection? Having issues with a transmission whine according to those receiving the signal. Checked all the fittings and cables. (There are 2 as I have a bulkhead fitting on the roof.) All test fine, but I get a definite short or continuity reading at the back of the radio itself.
  15. Okay, this really has me puzzled. I plugged my Baofeng G15Pro in to charge in my Jeep and I noticed that it did not operate as it charged. Ok, that's fine, but as it was plugged in it created interference and static in multiple channels on my Midland mobile unit. I unplugged and moved it into the garage and it still created interference across the board on my 575. What would cause that?
  16. I don't think so, but senility runs in the family...
  17. Ok, so I dug the mag mount antenna out and tested that as well as retesting the others. Here's what I got this morning: Mag Mount: SWR 1.19, 45 Watts Ghost: SWR 1.36, 50 Watts MXTA26: SWR 1.10, 46 Watts So apparently it was the meter or operator error . Needless to say I am both pleased with this morning's results and a bit embarrassed by my panic. I certainly appreciate you guys helping me sort this out, as well as your patience!
  18. It's transmitting at least as far as the HT in the house. I just remembered that I have the Mag Mount antenna that came with the radio! Headed out to test the meter on that that now.
  19. Only thing on the screen is the info when you power it on. Nothing changes when mic is keyed
  20. I was using the green scale at the top. Is this correct?
  21. I misread your question. It looks like it reads up 2k. The actual reading is 6 or 7
  22. If I'm reading it right, around 6
