  1. That is a good price, but more than i have to spend right now LOL I am still kicking myself for passing on a quad 6 right when i moved down to tn, was on market place for $150, fully working and had the bands opened up already.... i would have nabbed it if i hadnt already put myself into debt just from moving expenses... gotta refill the coffers before buying any more major radio gear LOL hence the $35 antenna, the $50 gamble president grant....etc.
  2. I have had my eye on the qt80, anytone at6666, which are effectively the same radio, and the 5555n2 or 5555plus, 50 and 45w respectively... been patiently waiting to find one on the cheap... just about every mobile/base i have gotten has been a "unknown condition" for gmrs, all of which ended up working either out of the box, or after replacing something simple (2 at878uv that needed nothing, and an at5888 needed a fuse and works great) meanwhile i found the grant for $50, in "unknown condition" which turns out to have meant modded exactly how i would have wanted (additional channels, clarifier unlock and slider mod, and dimmer knob converted to rf gain), dirty pots, and a missing internal speaker but a fully running grant goes for upwards of $150, especially the d858 chip version, since its the easiest to mod (since pretty much any cobra, uniden, or president from 1976-78 all ran the 858 chip on a 176 board, regardless of mobile or base unit) For me its more a matter of time... i am coming into my stupid busy season at work, (small engine mechanic) its hard to carve out multiple times to go test, so i would rather make it one go... also, a few of the guys i am looking to get back in touch with are cb/gmrs only, so not on 10m anyways so i would still need to play on 11m to reach a few guys
  3. I think the main stuff surrounding it is that i moved this past fall, and i had a good circle of friends from the former local gmrs repeaters, and most of them are also ham/ssb cb guys, and i miss rag chewing with em.... it aint the same callin on the phone... i certainly will get the ham license, been consistently practice testing 90-95% for tech, but i feel like i need more work on general, and with the bands on the downswing of the solar cycle in a year or 2, i am gonna want more than just a small sliver of 10m so i feel like i am not ready to go test... because why not go straight for general.... So tl/dr: im an impatient bastage that wants to get back on the air asap with my ole buddies from NY
  4. I guess my desire for 11m is mostly fueled by not having the time currently to go take the technician test, nor the spare funds to get a decent 10m radio. So far i have $50 invested in the radio (havent seen a single working 10m radio for under 150-175) and $35 in the antenna... swapped the lmr400 over from my gmrs antenna to the antron, and done... 11m setup. I do need to look into what all frequencies this radio actually has, as it has had a fairly substantial channel mod to it, it may be able to get up into the lower end of 10m, which would be handy once i do get licensed... but i have only had the radio for 3 days so far and only had it on air for about 25 min... i know it has at least 3 sets of freqs it can do so far, according to my tiny sa and a dummy load... gotta work thru essentially each channel and switch combo to see what they all do.... i might go thru that headache tomorrow as i have a rare random day off....
  5. Aside from one idiot probably pushing 2k+ watts jabbering about someone being mad because a jamaican "did something" with his wife, everyone else i heard on 37lsb was civil, talks of the weather out in oklahoma, vermont, massechusetts, etc... only one dumbass that i heard...
  6. None that would be type accepted, but just about any boofwang can work for both...
  7. Type acceptance for both gmrs and marine frequencies would prohibit this, as a gmrs type accepted radio wouldnt be able to tx "out of band" That said, something like a boofwang ar5rm likely would do what you are asking, as it can tx/rx in the 154-176mhz fm spectrum, as well as tx/rx gmrs frequencies
  8. Any of the folks on 10m ever slide down to 11m sideband around here? I dont have my ham license yet, but got an old President grant (the good original 1977 japanese one) up and running today, hooked up my antron 99, heard some traffic on 37lsb and called out for a radio check, and got back a great signal from south texas... not too shabby for an old cb barefoot... Now i gotta find some deox-it, since a few of the pots (painfully the volume is the worst) are scratchy, and maybe see about recapping it... and find an external speaker maybe...stock one leaves a lot to be desired.... Anyone else out there on 11m as well? I have chosen to go by triple 6 in east tn, as sideband seems to have a make up your own callsign from 3 digit number and location... easy to remember as my gmrs is also triple 6...
  9. Depending on what sound equipment they are running for wireless mics, 900mhz could interfere...
  10. Precisely..... like the 75 royce thats in the mail to me.... heres the original ad copy.... would anyone pay this today for a stock cb only radio? I doubt it...
  11. Some of the boofwangs are actually pretty close to what they say... like my ar5rm... rated 10w, , pushes 9.6w on uhf, 9.1 on vhf, also does approx 8.6w on gmrs, all tested into a dummy load, which in .y opinion is more than good enough for "out of band transmit"
  12. I have had good luck with using a 30" steel whip style mobile antenna for a base setup, had this mounted to a pole that pushed it above the roofline of my apartment in NY, and now have it mounted to the peak of my shed. Its a $30 bingfu antenna, so239 female bulkhead adapter, and a groundplane plate added to a shelf bracket. The round disc of metal was an attempt at a geoundplabe that didnt work out, and i didnt feel like trying to take it off, so i just added the so239-pl259 ground plane on top of it LOL used to be able to hit repeaters 30+ mi away with both my 25w anytone 778uv, as well as with my 5888uv that replaced it for more wattage...now i moved to TN and havent been on the air near as much, but i know i can get to repeaters a good 15-20mi away over the hills...
  13. The pioneer stuff is good..... i think i would give my left nut for a 70s Marantz though.... (that seems to be about the going rate anyways, with working units pushing into the several thousands of monies range....)
  14. Oh, i am nowhere near old enough to have been around tube radios when new either i was born in 88.... but yeah, the 60s and 70s hifi stuff is leaps and bounds better than the cheap chinese "radios" that they pass off as "DLP" "thx certified" etc....
  15. sounds like fun....LOL my "bluetooth speaker" on my fireplace mantle is a 1963 Nordemende Boehm with an adapter cable to a bluetooth reciever for the DIN plug for the phono input.... this isnt mine, but mine is in similar condtion.... there has been no internal modifications to it, it also does work for FM and short wave reception, but the internal antenna isnt optimised for shortwave, it would work better with an actual shortwave aerial....
  16. i may fall under the category of "some people" having just purchased a 1975 royce 1-635 am/ssb cb radio.... oh the joys of a completely crystal synthesized radio....LOL
  17. That can be done with a ssb capable cb radio, with no license whatsover... Also, with a standard technician license it opens up dstar and echolink vhf/uhf repeaters all around the world at the touch of a button on your phone... buddy of mine was showing me that right after he got his tech, we were talking to people in scotland via echolink on his phone...
  18. This right here..... i never would have thought that to be able to make a call from my property here in Tn, only 10min from "town" i would need 2 cell boosters in the house, just because we are on the wrong side of the ridge LOL Also, i am not far from where hurricane Helene ripped down all that complex infastructure last year... and NOONES cell phones worked here for months... This is why i am studying for the ham test... it happened once, it is only a matter of time before it happens again.... and i want to have comms working sooner than later... my "ham shack" is already 100% off grid. With battery banks and solar, and has not run out of power yet... have 2m, 70cm, gmrs, and cb comms already, about to put up a tower and a base antenna (antron 99) for 10/11m, and invest in a sideband capable setup for HF... i am going to be ready.... and i want to see if i can hit the skip to my buddies back in NY
  19. Im not so much wondering about how many fars it has, as thats easy to solve when you are only starting with 5w....plenty of 10/11m amps out there that will boost that signal plenty... more wondering interface, usability, etc... i aldo have my eye on the qt80/anytone 6666, but i seek to like the face plate of the at5555 pro better, i feel like it gives more info... i could be wrong though.... you also take a wattage hit on the 5555 vs the 6666
  20. While i am in the middle of nowhere, closest grocery store (fairly large chain food lion) is 12 min away, and work (lawn and garden mechanic) is 27 min away. As for family, my wife and i are the "black sheep" of our families, so not much contact there, and we have no children, only fur babies. My wifes commute to work is 15 min as well...
  21. Those are the parts of the country i try and stay away from..... hence why i am living on a mountainside in eastern TN.... i can walk out my back door and sight in the scope on my (redacted for forum rules, dont want to get in trouble) and no one cares...
  22. Let me know how it works.... i have been eyeing those for a while now, for once i get my tech... wonder how well they would work on the antron 99 i just picked up 2 nights ago i have stsrted slowly building up a ssb setup for primarily 10/11m use, and have started with the antenna...
  23. Did socalgmrs get a new username again? This conversation feels familiar.....
  24. Welcome from a snowy eastern TN!
  25. Presumably with sharp implements no less....
