I have the UV 32. The way that the body is made around the antenna hole is an odd shape with one side higher than the other. I got the 771 g and had to sand the out side of the base of the antenna for it to fully screw down into the hole. Otherwise it works great. Not sure about the digital side and how it would work. Mainly commenting on the fit

Questions about a Retevis 10 watt repeater...and a 25 watt repeater
WSIF574 replied to WSLH454's topic in General Discussion
I think a better question to ask yourself is the use case of the repeater? My reason for the choice of getting a repeater was to be able to contact family when I get away from the house into town about 5 miles up the road. My kid could be anywhere in the neighborhood and my wife is not in the garage where the base station was. Each could have a hand held and TX/RX out to me from anywhere in the house and neighborhood. Homes in my area are difficult to get through so it gives anyone the height of the repeater antenna. I did go with the 25 watt as any help is good. Money was not the deciding factor in my decision. If the HT is reaching where you need it to and the location of the HT is not an issues why get the repeater at all. Just get a good antenna for the roof/attic or pole ? -
No I just looked again. I thought you were referring to the side keys 1&2. Sorry to get your hopes up.

I have the UV32. I use chirp and select UV21progps. In the settings tab you will find the key function options.

Got my kid using GMRS when he is running around all over the neighborhood. I rather him loose a uv5g mini over an expensive phone. My wife didn’t start using it until we moved into our new home a few months ago. We have very poor cell signal at home and not much better around town. GMRS works better for local stuff as long as I’m still in the vehicle. Not going to be some weird guy walking around Walmart with my radio on hip.
-
I’m one of those people who keep the box. Accessories stay in there radios are on a shelf in the closet. My only suggestion would be for long term storage, what ever you pick, charge batteries to 80-90% and remove them. Charge once a year and check functionality.

Just want an honest opinion. Not that the FCC is going to do anything. As I started my drive today I hit scan just to see what’s going on. As I left my neighborhood I heard construction workers. Get it to town. Then 3 or 4 channels of businesses taking. Once on the main highway I hear a gps giving directions and a radio playing with people talking, apparently I was close as it went on for miles probably a child playing with a bubble pack radio. Sure I could just stay on one channel and be rid of it So if it was up to you would you move the FRS frequencies off GMRS?
-
It would not be rude if you wait for it to be quiet on the repeater and just ID and state what you are doing and range from repeater. It’s good info for anyone listening don’t just key up and listen for the squelch

I have a wip antenna mounted on the backside of the house going to my repeater. Gets me the radius I need for anywhere in town my family maybe ( cell service stinks at my house). I can hit a ham repeater on south mountain with no problem on a hand held at 20miles but that would require my wife and I to be licensed
-
For me it’s GMRS will do everything I need. My father is a Ham and I used to sit and listen to him talk all around the world on his set up. Antenna stretching from one side of the yard to another and a 70ft tower in the back yard ,whole room of the house full of equipment. I live in a HOA so it’s not possible for me to have those things. Any thing I could set up here would give me the same fars as GMRS. And I don’t need to talk to people I know in other states. He did to save long distance charges back when that was still a thing

Repeater connection with Midland mxt115
WSIF574 replied to Magnum1776's question in Technical Discussion
Sounds to me like everything on your set up is correct. I think it’s that because the receive tone is set you will not hear anyone that is replying to you that is not replying through the repeater. They are hearing and replying on symplex channel 22. -
A good external antenna setup for an ht
WSIF574 replied to beerftw's question in Technical Discussion
Everyone has given great advice. LMR 400 you can’t go wrong with but will need a mount and NMO connector. Magnetic mount would work too but because you mentioned upgrading to a base station I would skip that. Antenna choice can be tricky( kind of ) some just work better than others just because of there SWR , frequency resonance, and other variables. But don’t over think it. May want to order a few different ones from Amazon and try them out and see how each one performs then keep the one that sounds best. -
Well the antenna that comes with the radio 99.9% of the time works fine. A higher gain antenna for handheld radios mainly improves the receive side. Feed line has no bearing on this as it’s a handheld and there is no mention of using it as a base station. The radioddity is made in china. You still need to program that radio for repeater use.
-
Once you know you have your settings correct. If you still can’t hit a repeater, if possible try to get on your roof and try. The Leisure world repeater is most likely a roof top antenna at 15 -20 ft. Line of sight even at 3-4 miles could be the problem. For example if the antenna is at 15 ft at 4 miles it would appear to only be right at ground level on the horizon now add in every home and you need to get through all of them. I struggle here in Az due to every house and building having stucco backed with chicken wire.

Hanging antenna for repeater when hunting
WSIF574 replied to WSLC227's question in Technical Discussion
Should work just fine. Just use good coax as the higher you go the more loss you will have. If your radio has dual watch use it. One on repeater one on simplex. Depending where you are compared to your group and repeater the simplex may work better -
The answer for me is no. When I read this post I looked at other purchases I have made. I play guitar, American made guitars cost anywhere from 3 to 5 times the price of overseas made. The sound quality is not 5 times better. Build structure maybe. This would go for radios too. Look at a BTech GMRS pro. $150 American company using overseas manufacturing and others hardware. Now would you pay $500 for the same thing with out the 5-10% chance of having to deal with a dud radio? I will not

Getting back into it...Michigan's beautiful Keweenaw
WSIF574 replied to WSKU631's topic in General Discussion
Welcome. My opinion on this is that with out a good repeater base GMRS and FRS just will not have the coverage for emergency communication other than a small community. I guess you could pass the information using the "telephone game " method but that relies on everyone being in place at the same time. HAM is the way to go for large scale emergencies. In that type of situation you can use the HAM bands for better coverage/range. -
Can hear others but can't hear myself or my friend
WSIF574 replied to WSKT609's question in Technical Discussion
Using TSQL will make no difference other than turning off the speaker for anything not coming in with that tone output. Better to leave it the way it is so to hear any traffic on that channel before keying up -

WSIF574 replied to WSKT609's question in Technical Discussion
Like others have said line of sight is everything. In a down town area you are dealing with large buildings and a lot of RF noise. I would get a abree AR771G antenna for both radios. It might help, might not. -
What I was trying to say is I can’t activate that option even on the one I listed that I own. So others can request codes for my repeater
-
I cant figure out how to activate that button on my repeater.

Milkor says it will do all Tidradio models. That or just use chirp and find any tidradio model that will download from the H9 and copy and paste it to the H3 file.then upload

Baofeng DM32-UV CPS will NOT install
WSIF574 replied to Northcutt114's question in Technical Discussion
It could be your firewall. I have had problems downloading Milkor software on one of my computers and had to turn off the firewall. It may have accepted it as it came through Google Drive as a trusted source -
Everyone has given good advice. Mine would be don’t get frustrated with it. GMRS is quiet compared to CB. Signals get blocked easily. Some locations will give you miles of range others 1/2 mile. Don’t be afraid to ask questions here. There are no dumb questions. I have gotten a lot of good feedback. Welcome to the site. And have fun with it!
