TidRadio TD-H3 nothing heard for 2 seconds after transmit

I just got a brand new set of H3 plus and I'm having this problem. What am I doing wrong? It stinks at all things Tone related. Cuts off things I'm supposed to hear by muting the first few syllables. Randomly lets unwanted traffic through the ctcss rx tone. Like, the audio coming in is from a DCS repeater and it comes through on ctcss channel like a kid with a fake ID. But not every time.
