Following back up on this. Any ideas at all?

I'm hitting a repeater network that I can hear near Casper, but which has traffic all the way into Montana.  Calling in on simplex, I'm told that its a system linked into the internet.

A couple of questions.

One, I don't grasp how this works.

Two, is anyone familiar with this network?  I'd like to join it, if I could figure it out.

I have a MXT115 in my Jeep and a KG100G in a pickup truck. My Jeep rarely gets more than 100 miles from my house, and that only ever puts me within range of 1 repeater, which seems to have next to no activity.

 

I'm tempted to switch out the Mxt115 for a Mxt500 although the main use of the radio in the Jeep is to reach handhelds while out in the sticks, or to call back to a camper. That does mean that I use it in some hilly country. On flat ground, with the MXT115, I've communicated as far as 25 miles with another 15 watt radio, but obviously I wouldn't expect that with run of the mill handhelds.

 

So, here's my question. Do I gain anything at all, in real terms, by swapping out my MXT115 with a MXT500? More wattage, yes, but I won't be picking up more, I know. Thoughts?

[NL-770G Antenna question]

I just purchase a NL-770G antenna.  I seem to have a problem breaking antennas, which I have high mounted on a Jeep.

I was surprised that this antenna doe snot have a spring base (or rather lower part of the antenna where it mounts before it screws in).  I have the antenna mounts, or whatever they are called, from a couple of broken antennas.  Can I swap those out?

If not, what would folks here suggest this problem, before I hit a tree branch or something.

Actually, I found the number for the code (but I'm still curious what the "N" stands for.

I'm trying to program in a DCS code on a Midland MXT115 where the repeater lists its DCS Code as 145N.

145 doesn't appear to be an option for the Midland.  Am I correct?  And what's the "N" refer to?

[Good book on radio]

I've just gotten into GMRS and I'd like to learn more about radio.  Most of the stuff I find on the net tends to be published by people who know far more than I do, so much what I'd like to learn is routine to them.

 

Can anyone recommend a good book on the topic of radio?  I guess it'd almost be a text book.

[Connecting to repeater]

I guess I have the same question.  I occasionally travel through a big city in another state with my vehicle, and in the afternoons they have a really active club that has a repeater.  I'd like to join in, but in looking them up here, they use a "split band" and I have a Midland Micromobile.  I think I'm therefore flat out of luck, am I correct?
