  1. Hey, I have 4 Fender Stratocasters, and all of them blow away any baofeng (or moto)
  2. My two GMRS bao's have this in the menu: UV5G - Menu #14 -- Voice - selections --- "ENG" "CHI" "OFF" UV21G Menu #18 -- Language - same prompts except "CHI" is written in chinese I turn those 'voices' off in all my radios ---- You can just scroll through the menu options to find it
  3. I had this problem a year ago.......and didn't see this thread MY UV5G had that issue too.....I was able to get some firmware that corrected the CH15 issue for it.
  4. No need for a how-to book......just read your translated chinese user manuals.
  5. Can you bring the repeater up? If so, you can 'duplex' by using two radios -- one to key it up and another to listen to the output. If you can hear your transmission that means you are hitting it (you can tell by the signal if you are strong enough by the level of quieting your signal has.)
  6. Not familiar with any of the 8-10 watt HTs --- Do the batteries last long? Does it get too hot after using it a while? Just curious - I'm not planning on getting one though
  7. I have Mint loaded on a HD, but my favorite is Fedora wkstn 40 now -- for basic use and a few music apps My laptop has multiple personality syndrome....... I have a few different Linux distros to mess around with, each on it's own HD. I never got CHIRP to see my cables so I have to use Win7 to use a variety of programming utilities. It will run the latest version of CHIRP so I have to settle for the 'legacy' version which still works for most part.
  8. OK -- I still use win7 - I'd have to put one of my Linux distro hard drives in to see it - I still us win7 for my MS flight sims --- where I can fly/crash my virtual helicopters at my heart's content thanks
  9. I only see this - nothing else: I can scroll to the bottom of the page with no options
  10. I only see a 'cover' page with no options
  11. I've had this one for a long time, and it still works -- only 4 memory channels and 2 meters only It still works but has no PL so I use in on simplex most of the time. Yaesu FT-207R
  12. Yeah, those kid walkie talkies -- I think Montgomery Ward's brand was something like "Airline" How long did those telescoping antennas last ?? --- "can you hear me now?" CBers complaining about the kids on 'their' channel

    emergency trap

35 dollars for a 10 year license for either service - not bad --- cell service can also be iffy at times.....but there is no monthly bill for using the radios.
  14. It still has to connect to the usb - do you know the pin configuration of the 'rj45' connector --- in telco pins 4 and 5 are for line 1 but I forget the data pins - I usually follow the color code for cat 5 on them. Yes it is a "miklor" the input/output should be the same - gnd, tx, rx
  15. You can always make your own.....this one had a counterfeit chip so I got some UART's and made this.....I am using Win 7 no problems This one shows up on com port 4 and works great.
  16. Speaking from experience, make sure you use the CORRECT software......I bricked one of my Retevis RT27V's by not doing that
  17. CBers started that - personally I think that's not bad......revenue generation IS NOT what I call law enforcement, although driving like an idiot should be controlled.
  18. You do realize there is a monitor button - to hear if someone is transmitting (before you do)?
  19. I wonder how much bullying would happen if social media made them use their real names to sign in???
  20. Probably some couldn't afford a baofeng if it drops - be thankful for what you got. Radio 'class warfare' doesn't work for me....I have moto's and bao's -- they both work as intended. It's how the operator uses the radio that means more to me.
  21. @marcspaz I lived in Arlington, VA for 17 years before retiring to the sticks in PA I was a CERT member there too. I found most of the members who did get a tech license rarely used the radios except for the weekly net......kinda sad......If only GMRS was popular then, I would have recommended it instead.
  22. Never take a radio to a gunfight - you can't whip them with a 771
  23. Does that also display behind the case too?
  24. As a former San Franciscan, I can agree about LA being a Zoo! (Go 49ers and Giants)
  25. God, I hope not
