It's always been only mediocre. Could be because my antenna is only mounted at the 40ft level. It hears way better than my HT, but that's not saying much. I have no test equipment. I'm guessing the radio is fine and my antenna is too low.

Are odd repeater splits legal on gmrs? There's a repeater in KY that has an odd split...it listens on 21R and transmits on 22R. I didn't think that was allowed. Just curious.

Well I would but the ham I bought them from programmed one to be a receiver and the other to be a transmitter only. I do not have the cables, software and experience to reprogram them, so that option is out.

I have a repeater made from 2 old Motorola MCS-2000 radios. Coverage is good on transmit, but the receiver radio seems to have only mediocre sensitivity. I was wondering if an external FET preamp could be installed between the receiver radio and the duplexer, to make the repeater "hear" better. I know us hams use preamps for weak signal work on 2m, seems it could be done on FM on GMRS....

I live in KY but have property in the mountains of north central PA in Potter County. The property is situated down in a valley below mountains on a four sides. I was just wondering...if I wanted to set up a low power mountain top repeater that's water proof and solar/battery powered, how expensive would that be? Also, it would be located on state owned forest land. How can I get permission to set one up? Setting up a repeater at my camp would be almost pointless as there are mountains in all directions....

I frequently travel through mid Ohio on my way to and from PA. There is a very active repeater that has users that have radios that have what I call an end of transmission screech. What kind of radios make that sound when you unkey? It's not like the typical bubble pack radio "Roger beep". Anyone have a clue?

Lately it's been working really well. Antenna height above terrain is not optimal, so my expectations were probably a bit too much. Thanks for the replies. Mark WRKM-215 / W4UDX
