Baofeng DM32-UV CPS will NOT install

Question

Posted

I'm pulling my hair out over here. I've got CHIRP, a RETEVIS CPS, a Radioddity programming software, as well as a Motorola CPS all installed on my laptop. All work just fine. It's not OHE or PEBAK, I promise. At least I don't think it is.

This Baofeng DM32-UV CPS will not install. I keep getting "Couldn't initialize COM, Error 0" and then it just stops. Program will not install. I've googled and found only one reddit thread but it's archived and the OP just says that he "finally managed to get it working." Tried multiple versions from 1.41 all the way to 1.50. Windows 10, Alienware m15.

HELP?! 😤

Well, I have zero idea why this ridiculous solution worked....but I installed the CPS on another laptop, uploaded it to Google Drive, downloaded it on the laptop in question and voila....it runs just fine. I swear....🤬

I didn't have any issues installing on Windows 10 and 11..   If you are reinstalling, make sure to remove and clean your registry. Also try going into system services and see if you see the comport there.. Another thing to try is right click on the install program and choose install as administrator.  Nine times out out of 10 the latter will get you going.

Did that half a bajillion times to no avail. But installing on another computer and then just c/p'ing the installed program from their to another computer? Worked like a charm. 🤪

It could be your firewall. I have had problems downloading Milkor software on one of my computers and had to turn off the firewall. It may have accepted it as it came through Google Drive as a trusted source

As of this date, Chirp does not have a version that works with DMR

I read many complaints on the Internet about the DM-32, so let us know how well it works for you.

Correct, regarding CHIRP. It only programs analog radios.

So far, bear in mind that I am only 48 hours in. I really like the DM-32. It feels really solid in the hand. Well built, good volume from the speaker. I got my local analog repeaters both GMRS and HAM plugged in and got a few radio checks out of the way last night. All reports were positive. Mic volume was a little low according to one person, but he was the only one who mentioned it.

I'm brand new to DMR and am still learning the ropes but so far, I'm having a little difficulty programming it. I have gotten the DMR channels working on a RETEVIS DMR HT and its proprietary software, but I can't get this DM-32 to talk to that RETEVIS. I'm sure it's something that I'm doing and not the radio.

Doubtful. I turned off the firewall and still, no dice. Anyhow, it's sorted and installed and working. Now I just have to figure out why I can't get DMR up and running on it. 🤦‍♂️

Ugh.....it's because my RX Group List names didn't match....OK, DMR up and running now. 🤓

I was just going to suggest check your receiver. Talk group.

reports on Reddit indicate many people enjoy this radio, but are frustrated with the CPS software

what talk groups do you frequent?

The CPS software is a little tedious. The lack of the ability to copy and paste large chunks at a time makes for some slow going but to this neophyte, I was able to get a pretty good code plug installed in a little over an hour. Once I finally got it installed.

As to talk groups that I frequent, the answer would be none at the moment. There are only a handful of DMR repeaters near me and I'm currently working out how to make contact with them. I don't yet have a hotspot to try out for more net connected systems.

DMR is one of several digital voice modes that isn't the easiest to build code plugs for. It can be a rather long and tedious process. Then you have to go back and double, triple, check the various entries for errors.

I'm not sure how you organized your code plug but I found using a separate "zone" for each repeater and one memory slot for each talk group, slot number and or color code on the repeater worked well for me.

Most radios have only the option to set a "global" DMR ID. The particular radio in the example allows me to set the DMR ID per zone. So, I can use as many ID's as I have zones. For people who may use their radio for both Ham and maybe search and rescue work, where the ID's are very likely different, this is a handy feature.

There is also an option to set the zone DMR ID as global if desired.
