walmslsj89 Posted September 2, 2020 Report Posted September 2, 2020 Hi there, I'm new to the game. In learning about GMRS, I've been scanning channels, etc hoping to hear talk. One thing I picked up on is what appears to be CW Morse code: ' - - - . . . - - - . . ' either O - S - O - I or O - S - 8, I believe. It is on channel 3, 462.6125. It's not toned but rather static toned and possible that the tone is not heard because perhaps I'm picking up something pretty far away. I't been going on repeatedly for at least 2-3 weeks. Curious what you all think is causing this tone? I'm located on the Wisconsin - Minnesota border in Stillwater, MN. Thanks! Quote
ULTRA2 Posted September 2, 2020 Report Posted September 2, 2020 Hi the frequency you posted is FRS (Family Radio Service) CH3 you may have picked up stray signal coming from the frequency. Please note that GMRS CH 18 and FRS CH3 is close to each other frequency wise CH 18 is 462.625 and as you posted FRS CH3 is 462.6125 as you can see the frequency is only 12.5khz away from each other. (PLEASE CORRECT IF WRONG) Quote
walmslsj89 Posted September 2, 2020 Author Report Posted September 2, 2020 Hi thanks for reply. Thanks for the correction: yes FRS 3, 462.6125. But I'm listening with 12.5khz bandwidth and I just checked 462.625 (FRS18 )with no signal emanating from that frequency nor on the other side (462.6125 - 12.5kHz). Something seems to be cyclically transmitting the same sequence over about every 2.5 seconds on 462.6125 or nearby, not random voice. Quote
ULTRA2 Posted September 2, 2020 Report Posted September 2, 2020 You may also have picked up the repeater id tone for ch18 Quote
WRAK968 Posted September 2, 2020 Report Posted September 2, 2020 Well this has me a bit curious. Being the CW code is repeating, would it be possible to record the message for about 30 seconds or so and e-mail it to me? I can then try to decode the CW and see what exactly it says. Quote
Jones Posted September 2, 2020 Report Posted September 2, 2020 It could be the radio's IF and mixer picking up a shadow of a VLF beacon station. Is the beacon transmitting R O S in Morse? . - . - - - . . . If so, that is the airport beacon at Rush City on 282 Khz. Quote
walmslsj89 Posted September 4, 2020 Author Report Posted September 4, 2020 Thanks Jones, this is making more sense. The noisy tones are '- - - . . . - - - . . ', so at least there is what is an O and an S in there, but separation of audible tones might be muffled effecting my interpretation. On another note, SQL is maxed, and the tone is still coming through. WRAK968: I'll grab a recording after I find the time to drive further out from my home toward ROS NDB to see if the ROS theory holds true. I pinged a pilot in the family to learn a little more about that side of things.Best,S. Quote
