Ctcss tones on 22 near philly pa

So I when I drive up 476 I start picking up this signal on channel 22 that sounds like a machine gun. I did a little scanning thru the dcs and ctcss codes and found it on every single ctcss code and not on a single dcs code. What is causing this? Any ideas and does anyone in the area hear it to? It makes scanning for open conversation impossible.

I would guess that you are picking up interference from a nearby TDM digital repeater, or perhaps someone is illegally using TDM or DMR on the GMRS band.

I believe that Montgomery County has 462.725 on the air as an "Emergency Service" repeater using the 141.3 travel tone. I'd assume that they monitor that channel - and if it was a constant carrier that was opening up all radios on Channel 22, the county themselves would be aware of it.

I am in Central Montco near 476, and I just went and put both 467.725 and 462.725 into a radio attached to my roof mounted antenna to listen & see what I could hear, and I'm not receiving anything constant on either 462.725 or 467.725 on CSQ. I do get some sporadic and weak simplex analog voice on 462.725 that sounds like its related to construction work.

I'd ask what type of radio you're hearing this on - and what's your situation? (in car portable, mobile with roof mounted antenna, base radio, etc.) The fact that you refer to it as "Channel 22" makes me think you might be suffering from front end overload on a cheap portable. There's a ton of radio traffic on the Route 476 widening project right now.

Just a thought... See if there is any digital activity in the area on 154.240 MHz.

My UV5-R generates its own 2nd and 3rd harmonic distortion when it is in overload condition. (154.240 X 3 = 462.720)

I finally got my brothers log in info so this is me the OP. I heard it on 2 different days when I was working in the area. The exact locations were plymouth meeting near butler and german town the first day, and the second day was at the top of fountain rd over looking the mall. I start picking it up intermittently on 76 west just before the 320 exit. I will be up there tomorrow so I will update if it is still happening. The unit I heard it on was a brand new btech 50x1 mobile unit with a Nagoya nc-200 on a rb-50 magnet mount but I also keep a cheap cobra micro talk handheld with me, the first day I was up there the handheld only picked it up intermittently and I didn't pick up anything on it the second day.

Ok so I was up that way again today and it seems to have gone down quite a bit. It kicks in really strong right as I am driving by the plymouth meeting mall but then fades away. Maybe there is some kind of commercial radio set up in the mall that is causing interference. It was damp and drizzling all day today and clear last week when I heard it all the way from king of prussia so maybe that explains why it was weak today.
