My main application for GMRS is mobile communications with other members of a group when away from cell service while camping or four wheeling. To that end I constructed an antenna mount concealed under the fiberglass truck canopy using an old headache rack and some telecom rack shelves.
Just finished cobbling this together last night. I've got probably ten hours into it, half to modify the headache rack to fit the inside of the shell, and half to install the antenna mount and figure out how to get the cable into the truck and to solder on the PL-259 connector.
I need to do some further testing and I may need to make an extension to the shelf to better position everything, we'll see. Since I'm dual-licensed for amateur and GMRS this is a COMPACTenna in 2m/70cm, it seems to work well enough for GMRS that it'll be good enough, but I haven't ruled out a dedicated antenna for GMRS on the other shelf.
