Strange interference on 462.6125

Question

Posted

Good morning brain trust of GMRS.

I was wondering if anyone knew of any reason, I might be getting a repetitive dead carrier on 462.6125 that is disrupting my KG1000G scanning. It doesn't happen all the time but when it does it is a constant dead carrier on for about 2 seconds off for a second and then repeats. When I try to just scan GMRS it is constantly hanging up the scan. I could skip it and sometimes do, but this morning I decided to go out while it was happening with a different radio, the same thing was happening. Different radio antenna and some 7 miles away. I'm receiving it on my base at home as well as my mobile. I originally thought it may be something in my house causing it but i left all that behind. The only thing I could think of I was taking with me in both places were my Tahoe and my mobile phone. I turned my cell phone off but it still existed. When this happens, it can continue for several hours to 15 minutes or less. Any ideas or suggestions.

Thanks, Mark

Have you tried scanning with the engine off in your Tahoe? It is strange that you also get it in your house too. I have had this happen with a handheld in one certain area and I figured it was just a transmission of some kind in that area.

Someone could be using tones for a semi-private (because these are not privacy settings) conversation. Lock onto the channel and do a CTCSS/DCS tone scan and see if you can catch it.

Not this morning, but the Tahoe is parked in the driveway and not running when the base is scanning. It is not equipped with OnStar so that should eliminate that. I saw something on radio reference about John Deer using that frequency for some reason. Not sure why it wouldn't change with a 7-mile movement.  There are some farms around.

I have not tried this. I think the KG1000G is capable of scanning for this. If not, I have a Baofeng that I know is capable of this. I will try. The transmissions are on a regular interval though. Seems off but hey, you never know. There are a few kids in the neighborhood that have FRS radios I have heard on this channel before but at 7 miles they should be able to reach my mobile with them.

FRS radios (2w) can for sure travel 7miles. In fact they can travel much more than 7 miles. Especially if it’s just static.  However I’m betting this has nothing to do with FRS or your house or Tahoe.      This could be a data stream, interference from a local or not so local industrial complex with some machine…. This list is pretty endless.  Here I have something that sounds like a diesel engine of .725.  I just move on.  With out some one being there and tracking the signal, that could be a very long way off just don’t worry about it.  If it’s not something that is limited to one radio or one location then it’s just not gonna do a load of good guessing.

I run into a similar static problem in my town, a business uses a frequency close to 462.675 and it causes a continuous transmission for about 1 miles in each direction.  Also our manufacturing plant uses 462.6125 for the maintenance channel.  If you are on open receive you can hear it. If on a PL tone receive it isn't picked up. Good Luck, lets us know what you find.
