  1. I don't have much experience with that repeater, maybe someone else can give they're thoughts if you can't get anything more. But, my only ideas are, have you tried different heights just to check and you tried adjusting the power? I believe each channel can be set to different powers. You're getting 25w on each channel?

Yeah, I also tried it at about.. 24 foot I'd say. It's surprisingly worse at that point. I can do 40 or 25 on each channel, I tried it with 40 and it makes little difference.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

  2. Hey! Doubtful I'll have an answer or suggestion by the time I leave tomorrow, but I was loaned a Motorola GR1225 UHF Repeater for an event I'm doing this weekend. Along with some LMR400 and an antenna. Essentially the full setup. Its a full 40 watt repeater with tuned duplexer.

But, the issue is, the range is so short! I'm only pushing 25 watts and this was just pulled from a working environment where it was actually pushing the full 40 and coverage was perfect. The only changes are the LMR, the one previously used was some high dollar 15 bucks a foot extremely low loss cable, and the antenna. Its a UHF J-Pole antenna, and I've already tried multiple types of things including changing the cable, and antenna, adjusting the programming a bit, and the range is just crazy short. I even had a friend stop by and try to trouble shoot it. I just don't understand. I can go without the repeater for this event for the most part, but I would appreciate a solution.

I can't imagine what would be wrong with it, everything is screwed in correctly, fixed up, set right, I've triple checked! The range is only not even a block, the antenna is about 12 foot up in the air in a clear line of sight environment. Help!!

(I'll feel really stupid if its something like the push of a button, lol.)

  3. Well, there is a risk of an unlicensed person getting on the zello channel and using the repeater.

Depending on what permissions you have set. In my case its only being used by me and my buddy if either of us are out of range or don't have a reliable signal. The repeater we're on is about 15 miles away in a rough spot putting out 40 watts, its not the highest spot in the area. I'm within range most of the time, but for those rare times him or I am not, we still have a way to communicate with the users on it. The Zello Channel is passworded as well as Zelect+ were only Admins, Mods, or Trusted Users can talk and listen. So its pretty secure as far as that goes.

  4. I will allow someone else to step in and answer the legality of it. I know in past discussions, linking via RF is prohibited. But I don't recall anything over the internet. I've already got my project parts coming in for my link. The last thing I need to order is a directional antenna, since I don't have quick access to my site and I'm still experimenting with Zello, I'd like to keep it at home for a bit and play around with it. Hope your question gets answered!

  5. Well, avoiding questions of application and legality...

I suspect you are going to have a real problem finding something meeting the description you provided. However, given the difference in frequency, why not just use two antennas?  It will still be hard to find much below 1 or 2gHz that would meet your needs for directionality. But it would be easier than finding a dual-band directional antenna.

However, I think you'll quickly run into the issue is one of diminishing returns. If you can actually find 2 antennas meeting your needs and also providing any useful gain, you will probably be in the $200+ range, per antenna and the difference in gain from a high-quality vertical antenna would probably be around 3db.

My guess is you'd be better off by spending your money improving your feed line and connectors and removing any adapters and then buying a high quality dual-band vertical which should get you gain of 8+dm VHF and 11+ UHF.   (Eg. http://www.theantennafarm.com/catalog/comet-gp-9nc-1087.html )

You might play with placement of a reflector behind a dual-band vertical omni. But, that would really be hit or miss and you'd have to have the proper test equipment, time and interest.

anyway, just my 2 cents worth

Thanks for putting the first sentence in there.. Lol.. Alright, appreciate the cents. ;)

  6. Well the repeater is at a spot that will not cover anything East, at all, however, it'll cover everything West. It cuts off North and South at basically 180 degrees. Instead of transmitting towards the areas I can't cover, I figured why not have it with a directional antenna facing the direction I can cover so it can focus it in that area.

I attached the image of the coverage, it has full line of sight with the city of Dallas, the red circle is the repeaters location, the black is where the coverage ends or I will have no coverage.

(Won't let me attach the correct image, check my next reply for the correct one)

  7. Hey all, I have a VHF/UHF Cross band Repeater, and am looking for a dual band directional antenna, I figured I could ask here without being murdered as I have been before on RR. I don't know what information y'all need but I've done some looking around and have yet to find a dual band directional antenna, I'm looking for 180°. Thanks :)

  8. I was sitting in Saginaw when that tornado hit. I remember driving down I35 to Austin and it was just a wall of north bound utility trucks. Fort Worth's setup is very similar, most of the talk groups are encrypted.

Down here in the Austin area, GATTRS is a mix. Some are encrypted, others not. Sometimes it's dictated by the department (Round Rock PD for example) other times it's not. Sometimes it's dictated by other systems. One of the talk groups I utilize is tied to TxWARN and therefore has to be strapped secure.

Now there are also interoperability talk groups (which number in the 30's which are clear). Theoretically once dispatched, traffic can move to an OPs TG but doesn't always happen so many departments choose to encrypt everything.

In 800 MHz there are a handful of interoperability channels which are analog only (info is published in NIFOG). There are also some semi-new channels in 700 MHz which are Phase 1 only (clear).

You might write your city management about the importance of disaster talk groups which can be tied in to in case of emergency which are clear. Make a stink about it. News agencies generally don't like being cut out of operations due to encryption either.

I appreciate the reply, I actually took a look at the new APX6000's we got in, no encryption loaded as far as talkgroups go, didn't get to put it into Service Mode to see whats loaded. Dallas has a dedicated system for IOP, those talkgroups were loaded in and they are in the clear. Although, it was so heckitc, no one was on the same channel, lol, some accidentally switched when moving stuff around and bumping into things, others just stayed where they are. So confusing.. I run my cities Scanner page and oml the amount of "Thank you"s and hugs I get are crazy, I've had people tell me "Without you, I wouldn't have lived through that tornado" and it just amazes me.. And the departments wants to shut that bond off? Geez..

  9. I spoke with my PD Chief of my city and its all going to be 100% encrypted, but when I got to take a look at the new radios, none of the new talkgroups had encryption loaded on them, noted we're still quite a few months away from switching over. I suppose I could've put it into service mode and that would for sure tell me, I've been speaking with some of the Radio System Managers and they have been updating me on whats being added and stuff, I saw on RR the new system has been added to the database.

  10. Living in Austin, I tried this repeater today from the top of the Murchison/Far West hill, adjacent to the Austin ISD I/B tower, but was unable to pass a signal through it.  I tried listening to it for several hours today and heard nothing.

Thanks for letting us know, if you have a little Baofeng and have free time, you may just try going through tones, have CSQ on RX and switch through the TX.

  11. I apparently have random repeaters assigned to my account.. It shows I have 23 repeater listings.. I know the website was being worked on yesterday, I was just posting here to see if anyone else had the issue before I talk to Rich.

  12. I thought I remember replying to this thread a while back.

I ended up going to HRO, obviously not the place for GMRS, awesome that I realized that after the fact, but I bought 2 antennas, not knowing they were Ham band only, I was told they sell all sorts of stuff, not just for Hams, and I specified I wanted on that is something around 136-174 and 400-470, I suppose they thought I was talking about the receive end of it. I bought the same NA-771 and realized it was also a Ham band antenna. That may be part of your issue, because I noticed crazy results when using a Ham antenna on GMRS, and using a generic antenna on GMRS. So make sure to check the transmit and receive range when buying an antenna. I had a GMRS contact 15 miles away on simplex, rough terrain and lots of buildings, on a GMRS antenna, we made it 4 miles on a Ham antenna, HUGE difference, same location, same power, same route.. Crazy..

  13. First off, to the Admins, I apologize if this is in the wrong section, I couldn't decide if it was to go onto the fcc rules or general discussion.

"New  System with link established to DMR and our own national network.  Available for use.  National network requires monthly service fee plus cost of portable radio"

    3 things that scare me:

1, "link established to DMR and our own national network"

    2, "aprox 100 mile range"

    3, "available for use"

Doesn't sound legal or real to me. Anyone in the Austin area able to confirm the repeater is real?

I may try giving them a call later, says in the accounts description "Seacoast Telephone (James Black) is the owner of this account.  If you have questions about repeaters listed under our license, please call 603-758-6500 during normal business hours (8am to 5pm)."
