Depends on who offers it.  Our County Sheriff (Minnesota's Ramsey County) runs a first rate program.  We met weekly for 3 hrs per session and took 10 weeks to complete.  I just finished 2 terms on our city council so was well-acquainted with our law enforcement/fire services/county emergency services.  As a retired federal employee I've taken previous courses via FEMA.  I've also done some ARES coursework.

They made no pretense of us ever getting 'called up' to handle a large area disaster (the pros will do that) but we could be called to handle things like crowd control and/or media coordination.  But I did get a nifty backpack w/reflective vest, a green hardhat, flashlight and a multi-tool to close gas mains and break through tempered glass (vehicle rescue).

    Worth it.

Thank you for the information. I'm going to do it when I have more time...I've never been in a class or course where I didn't learn something. The program where I am seems to be pretty comprehensive and they also point toward some FEMA online classes that I can take. Thanks again!

After 5 months on the waiting list, I received notice my KG-UV9GX has shipped.  My order # was in the 130xxx range.  I also ordered the Smiley Slim Line Whip.  Received my Ed Fong DBJ-UHF antenna kit last week.

I completed a CERT program via our county sheriff's office a couple of months ago.  Now studying for my HAM Extra class exam.  Major snowstorm will impact us middle of the week.

    Congrats!

I was just looking at a CERT program last week. How was it?

However, there’s nothing wrong with using tones with simplex.

Good to know...I was under the impression that with tones set on ham simplex you wouldn't know if the frequency was clear before transmitting so it's considered bad form. I suppose it would be the same with GMRS, but that nobody really cares. I say this with my deep expertise and experience; I've been a ham for 2 weeks and a licensed GMRS user for 3 months, so everyone should listen to me.

I'd like to know more about the RT systems software as well. I am waiting on the 9GX as well and have recently seen some videos of people getting theirs. Frankly I'm thinking of cancelling. These people waited at least 6 months to a year to get them! I was told 15 weeks and then Mark said hopefully less. It's been 3 months already. How long ago did you order your gx?

Santa ordered mine for me on December 1st so it's been 11 weeks. Hopefully I'll have it in a month. If you can wait, I think it's going to be worth it; I say this based on my experience so far with the 9PX. The only two gripes are in my original post, and the CTCSS programming definitely makes software a must have. I think I'm going to order the RT Systems software, so I'll update when I do. I don't care about auto racing frequencies, so I'm probably going to replace that bank with ATC frequencies (ground, tower, TRACON, etc.) for airports/areas relevant to me, and good software will make that much easier.

Yes, it is a really nice and well packaged radio. As you noted in your other post, the Band button will wake up the screen. But Menu option #1 AB:s can be setup to Always On.

Thank you. Maybe I'll try that and see how it affects battery life. I wish that when the screen is asleep, pressing a button only woke the screen up without executing that button's function, but that could be annoying in other ways.

The preset tones would be a real annoying thing.

Turn off the display off timer if that’s a setting, but set it for lower brightness and/or pick up a spare battery. I have a radio that turns its display off also and it annoys me also, but I haven’t decided what to do about it.  I turn the volume up/down to get the display.

Unfortunately, the volume doesn't wake it up. It's not a big deal though, I just hit the band button twice and then I don't interrupt anything. It'd would be nice though if volume woke it up.

I really don't get the preset tones, but overall, I'm really happy with it so far and I'm really looking forward to getting my GX soon. It was ordered December 1st so hopefully only a month or so to go. Definitely no regrets!

I know this is probably an easy question to search for, but I can't find any that answer this specifically. I just got my GMRS license and am trying to see if I can hit any repeaters near me (in CT). I don't have a ton of hope because CT is full of hills and mountains, although I do see a few on the map that seem to cover really large ranges.  I am trying to connect to one near me after I input the Rx and Tx CTCS codes. When I hold the PTT button, it shows full signal strength on the radio, but I am unable to hear any noise/morse code, etc back from the repeater (or anyone talking on it).  Does that mean that I am not hitting the receiver? What does the full signal strength in the radio show in this sense?

I'm fairly new to this, but don't be surprised if you don't hear morse code or any traffic on the repeater. The one in my area is quiet 99% of the time, but the owner does monitor it quite a bit I think...he's the only contact I've made on that repeater.

If you are hitting the repeater, you should hear some noise (the kerchunk) of the repeater after you unkey the mic. If you know you are in range of the repeater and you're outside (definitely not in a car if you're using an HT), it's a good way to tell if your radio is configured properly. Even better if you can establish line of site to a repeater. I would also suggest taking the tone off the repeater output frequency to make sure.

  8. I just got one a few days ago, and so far it seems really nice. The only thing that annoys me is the that there are CTCSS tones on all the simplex frequencies (and on the RX only GMRS frequencies), which I just made a post about in the technical discussion forum, and that the Wouxun software is not very good in my view. I'm going to try the RT Systems software, which requires a different cable I think. Also, the ham frequencies are programmed starting in channel 201, which I don't really understand for this model. The GMRS RX only freqs start at channel 1. Not a big deal though and I don't really mind it since GMRS is channel based. I probably would have done the reverse and started the GMRS frequencies at channel 201.

The other thing I forgot to ask about in my post is how to wake up the screen without changing a setting on the radio. What I'm doing now is hitting the monitor button twice or flipping the channel selector up and then back down. But this is annoying if you're scanning because it stops the scan.

I do not have either of those radios so no experience with the RT Systems software for them, but I *do* have their software for pretty much every radio I own (including a Wouxun KG-UV7D), and I highly recommend their programming software.

The answer to the second question is easy ... yes, you can buy one package that includes the cable and just buy the software (which can be downloaded) for the second.  I think they make about seven or eight cables but they are used for multiple different radios each, so once you have that particular cable you don't have to buy it again.  That particular one (USB-K4Y) is used to program any radio with the typical K-type connector.

    Thank you!

  10. I just received my KG-UV9PX and am waiting on my GX. When looking at the programming charts I noticed that CTCSS tones are set on all the simplex and repeater GMRS frequencies, and on all the Ham simplex frequencies on both radios. Why is this? As far as I know, people don't use tones on ham calling frequencies for the most part, and I don't believe on the other simplex frequencies either. For GMRS, I'd have to either remove them or change them anyway unless they just happen to match the tones of others in a group.

Also, I am using the Wouxun red cable and their software but am thinking about getting the RT Systems software if it's better than the Wouxun software. Can I buy one RT systems cable for both radios and just buy the software packages for each radio? The Wouxun software seems a bit antiquated and unstable, and it's a pain to go in and remove all the tones. I've had it crash on me a few times and I would love to be able to export the programming to a CSV, be able to copy/paste, etc. I'm running Windows 11 on a fairly new Dell XPS 13 with 32MB RAM.

    Thanks in advance!
