Anyone try this radio out yet?
Looks like it may give some better options vs the Midland mxt275. Wideband and possible more channels. Looks interesting.

This. It's not that Midland gear is bad, per se, but that's one aspect they're kind of limited.
I wonder if the wouxun kg1000g might be a better choice, and it's similar price wise to the Midland, though it doesn't include the antenna. That said, a basic 1/4 wave is around $10, and it sounds like op already has a mount.
I have the KG100G on my list also but I like the handset on the Midlands better. The idea of having everything hidden but the mic is appealing.
Also I'd like to buy something that at least has some profits staying in the US.

I bought and tried the melowave version. Failed in about a week. I'm looking for a 1/4 wave nmo mount now.

I'm pretty new to GMRS but I'm liking the flexibility and performance for emergency and remote communication. Right now I only have small handhelds but on my vehicle have added an NMO antenna mount for better reception.
I'm trying to decide if it's worth going to a MXT575 or if a MXT275 would be good enough. The lower power and narrow band only are holding me back on the MXT275.
Anyone have experience with either they'd like to share?
Thanks

So years ago I bought a cheap Walmart FRS Radio (Ozark Trail OZA19LT001) that talks between channels 1 (462.562) and 22 (462.725), and I forgot all about it for I only used it a couple times while camping and hiking. So I pulled it back out about a week ago and played with it so I could figure out what tones equaled what Hz (tone 1=67 hz, tone 2=100hz, it has "127 tones" or something similar. They're all over the place and hard to calculate exactly which one.) While doing so I found that almost all GMRS repeaters were still being picked up by my cheap 20 dollar for 2 pack radio, even though it has a hard time communicating with each other (figures it would suck at transmitting and be okay at receiving).
So I hit scan. This thing scans incredibly fast. So i set it to no tones and pick up everything it heard. So I had my HT set to the channels I generally use (16/575 and 20/675) and my cheap one listening for other frequencies. This way I could use FRS channels I picked up while also having the option to pick up GMRS 15/550 - 22/725.
Obviously not the fastest way to scan. I'm sure there's plenty a million times faster. But to go from 1/562 - 22/725 in only about 2 seconds, it scans at a decent pace im not upset about.
Anyone else have jury rigged ways of picking up frequencies while not disturbing their HT/Mobile?
Any idea of what brand radio you're having luck with? I'd like a cheap handheld scanner.

Sounds good. I'll play around with the settings also when I have time, and report back how it works for me.

As anyone adjusted the settings from 2 to 5? I've appreciated the spreadsheet and the settings have helped. Now I'm wondering about spreading out the lower settings because I get the feeling 4 Matt be too high and 3 is too low (after adjusting from the factory settings.

Thank you for sharing this.
I'm new to GMRS and looking to learn more about the system and how is working in the area.

It also has more channels you can program vs the Midland.
