  1. I must be searching wrong. Does anyone have the thread for the required software?
  2. Any idea how I can obtain the software?
  3. Greetings all. I recently obtained a used Vertex VXR 7000U Repeater/Base Station along with the programming software. I found the software relatively easy and much like CHIRP software with the exception of one issue. When I programmed it for GMRS repeater frequencies and set it for wide band, when uploading it to the radio I receive an error message telling me that by law it can only be used in narrow band. It then switches it back to narrow band during the transfer. Can anyone tell me if this is a software issue or my radio itself? This unit is in very good condition and everything seems to work with the exception of this problem.
  4. Roadrunner Beep. Beep Beep!
  5. Do any of you that own repeaters use some type of auto ID? If so, is it as simple as plug and play, or how does it work. Yes, I spent some time doing a search on this forum and most likely used the wrong words because I couldn’t find what I’m looking for. I also searched the web and a few radio sale places. Thank you in advance for your input.
  6. Thank you for all of the input. The main reason for my original question was to verify that Roger Beeps are not the new EMP in the radio world. I understand and respect that some like it and others hate it, but thankfully it’s still a free Country that we can still make our own choices. I personally don’t care if I use the Roger Beep or not on this persons repeater. It just so happened that the particular radio that I was using for my very first interaction on GMRS had the Roger Beep enabled. I don’t mind turning it off. I just don’t like someone, who by the way is just another user not the owner of the repeater, feeding me a line of B.S. for the sake of getting me to disable it. If I wanted to be manipulated by people spoon feeding me crap I’d get into politics. I will say that after listening to repeater traffic for the past few weeks that I somewhat like the Roger Beep for the sake of knowing when the transmission is complete. There are a few people that keep their radio keyed while they’re thinking and many times when that happens several other people try to key up. I am in the process of getting my own repeater up and running due to the fact that there are none in my immediate area. (The repeater that I currently access is just barely in range.) And when I do set it up I’m going to use my Roger Beep. I’m looking forward to the first person telling me that I need to shut it off so as not to ruin the repeater. And as far as gay truck drivers looking to meet up because of my Roger Beep……. Well, thats why we have German Shepherds. I will provide public access to my repeater because I’m generally a nice guy. If people boycott my repeater because I use a Roger Beep; I really don’t care. The main reason for my repeater is for family communication.
  7. As I have posted the other week, I am fairly new to GMRS, although I have been around two way communication for many years. I have recently received permission to use a repeater in my area and am very appreciative of this. The other day, after listening several day to the local traffic to learn proper etiquette, I attempted to communicate through the repeater by identifying myself with call sign and location. Some guy instantly acknowledged me and demanded that I turn off my roger beep because it raises havoc with the equipment. From my previous listening, I know that this individual is not the owner of the repeater. Now, if the owner himself doesn’t like roger beeps, its his equipment, and he is gracious enough to allow me to use it. For this I’m am very thankful and will oblige any demands or requests that he has. If I don’t like his demands and requests, I don’t have to use his service. My question to the forum is; a roger beep is a roger beep. As far as I can tell, it’s just an additional part of your transmission. I really need someone to explain in terms that my little rat like brain can comprehend how a roger beep is going to take out someone’s equipment. The way I look at this whole thing….. Instead of idiots that like to deadkey and jam repeaters, it they are that malicious, why don’t they just send out a series of roger beeps and nuke the entire system. Apparently roger beeps can be as destructive as an actual EMP. Thanks ahead of time for your feedback. I look much forward to learning more about the destructive powers of the roger beep.
  8. Interesting video. I wonder if the power output is the same or greater than the Retevis.
  9. Greetings! What do you use to seal your outdoor Type-N and PL-259 connections? Is dielectric silicone acceptable, or should I be using something else?
  10. Back in the early 80’s, I worked EMS in a small town. Our ambulance had a radio that was called “Pack-Rat”. We had the regular two way that was installed in the rig, and a handheld docked next to it. When you undocked the handheld it would use the rig radio as a repeater. So even when sub terrain, as long as the rig was on that property it would repeat all trans and rec to the handheld. It was awesome. Until the FCC banned it. Unfortunately I don’t recall the reasoning behind it, but we ended up with a crappy radio in the rig with no pack rat after.
  11. No internet, and no cell service.
  12. Thank you. This is why I asked first. Perhaps I didn’t do a very good job at explaining my actual goal here. I instead went right to my possible solution. I don’t mind putting a base station in the cabin. But I will have the potential of missing out on the person attempting to contact me unless I stay near enough to the station, or upset the rest of the family by having the volume cranked way up. The same for when outside of the cabin. I have very limited reach with my handheld, and don’t want to have the radio in my vehicle constantly on with the volume cranked way up not to mention the potential of a dead battery. Is there any interface that will allow me to be somewhat free of staying glued to the base and yet having access?
  13. Greetings. Can a repeater be used to hit another repeater. At my cabin, there is a repeater about forty miles away that I can hit with my mobile, but barely reach with my handheld. Can I set up a Retevis RT97 on my property so I can access the better Repeater with my handheld while indoors?
  14. I like that. The numeric identifier after. Thanks!
  15. Greetings everyone. As a fairly new person to the GMRS world, I am concerned and very conscientious about doing things proper. Now, please correct me if I’m wrong on any of this, and also guide me along. My understanding is that I only need one license for my family. If this is true, if I’m talking to my wife through a repeater, do we both give our call sign after transmission, or does just one of us need to? Either way seems like it would seem confusing to a third party listening in, and if I can resolve this ahead of time instead of having someone consuming my time correcting me when I’m possibly in a hurry. Thank you ahead of time for any of your input.
  16. Greetings everyone! I have a two fold question that has been haunting me for quite some time now. I made the mistake of searching the web for answers and have come to the conclusion that there are many self proclaimed experts out there that just like to ramble on with no concerns of blowing someone’s base station up or burning down their building. If you put an antenna on a tower, are they each separately grounded, or does the tower ground take care of everything that’s attached to it? If everything is properly grounded, is it still best to disconnect your coax, (If able to) during an electrical storm, or is your equipment safe? Isn’t there a National Electrical Code that must be followed for the grounding of towers and antennas? If there is, what is it, and why is everyone re-inventing the wheel?
  17. Thank you for your help! I have requested permission from both the West Milwaukee and the Waukesha repeaters. So far my experience on this forum has been outstanding. I once was looking into ham radio but unfortunately encountered a handful of extremely rude people. I realize that not all hams are rude, but apparently my area is saturated with the bad ones. I love to learn new things and ask many questions while building off of the answers from past questions. However; I must admit that I don’t deal with condescending jerks very well. It never comes out well.? I’m a nerd that loves technology. I’ve been dabbling in two way communication for forty plus years and know just enough to be dangerous.? Now that I’m retired I want to learn more. I hope to be an asset to other newbies some day and be part of keeping GMRS from turning into another Children’s Band Radio fiasco. Again; thank you for your advice and help.
  18. Thank you for your reply. I am located in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin.
  19. I hope that it’s acceptable to ask this question on this thread due to similarity. I am fairly new to GMRS but have searched the web for local repeaters with no result. Closest listed repeater is 100 miles or further and yet I can hear some people talking each night that would seem to be fairly close due to some of the things that they speak about are unique to my specific area. It would seem through their conversation that the repeater is open to the public. (They were talking about multiple people that pass through their system) Is there a way that I can scan and figure out the offsets and Ctcss or Cdcss so I can gain access? I currently have a Baofeng BF-F8HP.
  20. Hello everyone. I’m new to the forum so please be patient with me. I’ve read through as many posts as possible, and came kind of close to an answer, but not fully. I have a Jeep Wrangler that has a fiberglass top. So my question is; how and where do I mount my GMRS antenna to benefit a ground plane? If I mount it to the metal tailgate, does it use the rest of the frame and metal parts of the body as a ground plane? I personally don’t think so, but instead of redesigning the wheel; I’m pretty sure that some of you have already conquered this quest. Thank you in advance for any constructive replies.
  21. How did you mount your antenna to your Jeep and obtain a decent ground plane?
