Are there 2 different channel modes on the TD-H3? When pressing the orange V/M button, the voice prompt says "channel mode" twice. Seems like it is cycling through 3 different modes.
-
@WRXB215 My understanding of this radio (TD-H3) is that it can transmit on both HAM and GMRS only when the radio is in Normal mode. Someone correct me if I am wrong about this. If that is true, I was wondering what the difference is between the HAM and GMRS versions being sold on Amazon. The antennas are different and the FCC ID#'s are different. I wasn't sure if there was anything else that made the radios different.
-
When I put my GMRS version in Normal mode, the GMRS channels are no longer programmed into memory, and I thought you could transmit on HAM and GMRS in Normal mode, and HAM frequencies when in HAM mode, even if it's an advertised GMRS version.
-
So, is the only difference between the HAM and GMRS versions of the TD-H3 sold on amazon the antenna that comes with the radio (and the FCC ID#)?
-
For now I have it set to GMRS mode. I have a local repeater on the A band and a local HAM on the B band to listen. When I press the middle PTT button, I noticed that the red light comes on and the screen indicates that I am transmitting. Now I don't have any of the tones setup for that frequency, but I was surprised that the radio acted like it was transmitting. I expected a tone or nothing to indicate that transmitting on HAM was not possible. Just curious.

I just got this radio. Which mode do you guys run in? I have a GMRS license, but no HAM license yet. Is there any advantage to running in Normal mode versus GMRS mode?

Update: I reached out to Radioddity through Amazon, and they said the manufacturer's feedback was misprinted labels. They confirmed the actual capacity is 2500mah.
-
Maybe they misprinted some battery labels and just decided to use them anyway. It just bothers me a little that I might not have a legit battery. I don't have any real way to test the battery, and I don't have another uv-5g plus to run a comparison.
-
WRXB215, Understood, I'm more concerned that the 308 casings have not been properly labeled and may cause damage to my rifle.
-
WRKX686, Can you let me know how you got that info? All the product pages say 2500mah, and I have watched several video reviews where the reviewers say it's 2500mah.
-
The battery doesn't appear to be physically larger. I'm suspicious.

I recently purchased a Baofeng UV-5G Plus from Amazon (1 Pack, sold by Radioddity). The listed battery capacity is 2500mah, but my battery label says 3500mah. Can anyone else confirm which battery they have? Any reason for concern?

I have two of these radios and so far I like them. One thing I have found to be annoying is that they don't seem to charge if I'm using a fast charging brick. I'm guessing this is some kind of limitation with the type c port on the batteries. Most of my chargers these days are some form of fast charging, so I have to search for an older brick to make sure I'm not using a fast charger. Sorry if this has been covered already.

Thanks blastco2. I have a follow up question. I have one of the side buttons on the radio programmed to Scan with a long press. Which type of scan does that initiate? Is it a memory scan of only channels that I have toggled to Allow Scan?
-
Does anyone with this radio know if their is a difference between the Scan button on the mobile app next to Dual CH and the Scan found in Device Settings on the mobile app? Are they scanning in different ways? Is there a way to Scan only the channels/frequencies that you have toggled to Allow scan?
-
Does anyone know if you can setup/program multiple radios using the same mobile phone with the app? Do you have to use a separate mobile device for each radio?
-
Ok for anyone that has this radio (Btech gmrs pro), I was able to figure out how to save Ham channels for monitoring. From the mobile app, you go to Device Settings, and then Channel & Groups. The FRS and GMRS channels are all saved in Group 1, so I put my local Ham frequencies in Group 2. I believe there are 6 groups and 30 channels in each group. I found it more challenging to program the Ham frequencies from the radio. You have to use the two function keys just below the screen to enter into the right screen to be able to edit channels. My next question I am trying to figure out is whether I can Dual Watch from different groups, meaning can I monitor a GMRS repeater channel from Group 1 while also monitoring a Ham channel from Group 2? I may have to program my local gmrs repeater into the same group as the Ham channels that I would want to monitor.
-
Yeah, I haven't figured out yet how to simply input or program a Ham frequency on the Btech GMRS Pro and start listening. Can't figure it out on the radio or on the mobile app.
-
kerstuff, can you describe how you know it has frozen up? Mine may be doing the same thing. And other than that does your radio work fine receiving both Ham and GMRS and transmitting on GMRS?
-
Anyone know of comprehensive tutorial video or youtube video that goes through all the settings and features of the Btech gmrs pro? I need help with how to monitor Ham and other frequencies. I found the Scan feature, but not sure how to save frequencies as channels that I can monitor easily. And I have various other questions. Just wondering if someone has put out a good video on this radio.
-
Sshannon, I didn't know that about the Btech gmrs pros. Would I have to get a different antenna for that? Not sure how to program the radio to do that.

gortex2, my question for satellite devices would be reliability during a storm. I dropped Directv partly because I was tired of losing TV during a storm. Is it the same with Garmin devices, or are they better at holding signal during a storm? I have considered Garmin devices, but they are pretty expensive.

jnr0104, thank you for the helpful info on my area. I was really hoping there would be more gmrs repeaters that would work for my area. I am starting to look into getting equipment to establish a base station at my house. I can do an antenna on my roof. I was really hoping to get about 10 to 15 miles of range because that's about as far as my immediately family gets spread out from each other on any given day. I was thinking I could put a gmrs radio in every car, with backup power and instructions on how to use in case of an emergency where cell phones go down. Do you know if there is a local group that meets up from time to time?
-
We are definitely working on a family plan including the things you mentioned. I mainly just want to be able to communicate with family (wife and kids) in the initial phase of an emergency so we can figure out a plan of where we are meeting. Main emergencies we are thinking through are weather events, or terrorist events that might take out cell phones and power. The challenge I am finding with radio, is that you have to purchase the equipment first in order to know what kind of range and capability you have in your location. I'm really hoping GMRS works out, because I bought nicer radios for that. I just got the UV-5R to monitor Ham and play around. I probably didn't need to do the gmrs unlock. I think it's still working just fine other than the issue I am having. I just have to be careful not to press the PTT button while monitoring Ham.
-
My goal is simply to have a way to communicate with family during an emergency, and I was hoping to get a range of about 10 to 15 miles. After a little research, I decided to get a gmrs license and bought 2 Btech GMRS Pros. However, I have not been able to find many repeaters in my area so far, so I decided to get a Ham radio so I could listen and play around. I'm starting to think that if I really want emergency comms, that I am going to need a base station. But I still haven't decided if gmrs or Ham is going to be the best for my situation. And my cheap UV-5R quickly tripled in price when I added an antenna and extended battery.
