  1. Also, is there a good way to track and tag batteries? Color dots or using a labeler? Seems there is always one dud battery that gets back into the mix...
  2. Great info gentlemen, thanks and appreciated.
  3. Seeing a few of these on ebay in the $400-500 range -- worth it? Wondering about programming and what kind/size of antenna you would have to put up? Thanks
  4. I have a few radios I am putting into storage in a pelican case - do you remove the batteries or keep them in the radio itself? Thx
  5. I picked up a DTR 650 recently and I'm going over all the features - is there a way to lock the key buttons on the radio? Perhaps I missed it in the manual, couldn't find it.
  6. I bought two of these to play around with, got about a mile with the stock antenna in my neighborhood. I had a few text messages go through even though the app indicated they did not when it was out of the mile radius. Anyone have a recommendation for a better antenna? Thinking outdoor pole mount. Thx
  7. Even compared to say the stock rubber duck antenna?
  8. I've got an MFJ-1719S on my Yaesu 70D that I use just when I want to keep a compact feel to the radio, kind of more like a large cell phone. Anyone else use these types of antennas? I guess it depends on the situation - easier to put in a coat pocket or backpack, quick grab, accessible.
  9. Thanks all for the info, great to know about this, been wondering about it for awhile now.
  10. On one of the GMRS local repeaters I monitor I hear data burst sounds every now and then -- is it ok to do this without permission from the owner?
  11. Might be a good weekend project, I found an extra one laying around.
  12. Would ammo (metal) boxes work? Something like this? https://www.minutemanstove.com/products/minuteman-faraday-emp-electronics-protection-box?variant=40623487287375 If so, would be a good way to stash an emergency radio and some accessories.
  13. I have a couple, just bought them for USB charging capability -- haven't put them to any test yet, wouldn't have an issue having a friend or family use it even if it gets lost or destroyed at the price point.
  14. I own several BTECH and Radioddity (GM-30) radios for having the ability to charge via a USB-C cable, say if out hiking and using an anker cell phone battery to recharge in the backpack. Anyone own similar radios for this feature? Any pros/cons that you have found? I do like getting away from the charging dock for portability/convenience in the field. I also have a couple of midland frs radios that will do this, I wish they had more radios that featured this option.
  15. Interesting article: https://www.vice.com/en/article/4a3n3j/backdoor-in-police-radios-tetra-burst "A group of cybersecurity researchers has uncovered what they believe is an intentional backdoor in encrypted radios used by police, military, and critical infrastructure entities around the world. The backdoor may have existed for decades, potentially exposing a wealth of sensitive information transmitted across them, according to the researchers." Secure is never totally secure, right?
