  1. I didn’t think of that! There was actually no issue with the radio at all. I had a UV-5R that was set to the repeater channel to see if I could hear anything from my GM-30. I know, this is frowned upon. But I’ve got limited resources for testing and only use the UV-5R to listen for my radio. Turns out the UV-5R was unsurprisingly unable to receive from the GMRS repeater. I could not set the tones on it. I ended up transmitting on my GM-30 asking for a quick radio check and instantly got a response. I’m still new in all this, so I come across small issues that are basically only issues due to my lack of knowledge or experience with the radios. Moral of the story is don’t use the wrong equipment to solve issues.
  2. If somebody could delete this, that would be great. I believe I've fixed this. I'm trying to set up a local repeater on my new GM-30, but I'm not having any luck being able to transmit on it. I've tried looking at everything in the Radioddity software, and I'm certain I've got everything correct, but it's just not working at all. It appears as if I have the latest firmware, and it just does not want to work. Does anybody have any knowledge of this radio or insight on the issue? I've tried swapping the TX & RX tones, with no luck, I've tried changing the squelch, and no issues at all. I did notice that I cannot change the step in the settings on the radio or in the software though, not sure if this is part of the problem or not.
  3. I went with my girlfriends dad to a local ham radio outlet because I got him interested in ham and GMRS. This anytone was one of 4 ht's they had they were selling as GMRS. My issue was 100% user error. It was setup with 3 beeps before transmitting, so I assumed this meant it was blocking me out from transmitting. User error is a killer for me! However, it was stupid how they shipped the radio with a total menu lock that per the manual, can only be disabled by programming the radio. Which gave me trouble because I wasn’t even able to disable this without updating the firmware first. I love the radio and I’d love to get one for myself, but that factory lockout is really annoying. Especially when you’re not expecting it!
  4. Does anybody know how to get the 878UV II Plus to work on GMRS? I’m not having any luck with it transmitting. Is there some sort of update or firmware you need to get it to work?
  5. I'm currently just using a magnetic mount antenna, the cable is far too short to make it fit in my car without having the passenger choked by the cable. I'd love to have a lip mount, but I have a small sedan that doesn't really have anywhere good for a lip mount, sadly. Thinking about just just getting this antenna, I've had good luck using one in the past. And it's small! https://www.buytwowayradios.com/midland-mxta13.html
  6. This didn't help my issue, I tried it last night and it was the same as using he "V/M" button on the radio, still locked me out of GMRS. I came across somebody who has also had this issue in the past, which provided instructions from AnyTone that did help solve the issue I had.
  7. I just wanted to post an update to anybody who is either wondering what ended up happening with me or for anybody out there who may be having the same issues I had. After doing a little more reading online and in this community, I came across a post talking about how sometimes this radio is shipped set for HAM only, which obviously is an issue when you're trying to buy a GMRS radio. Somebody in another thread had linked to an article about flashing the software to update it to be GMRS ONLY. Below is a link to the post which helped me out. I set this up last night and played around with the radio last night and on my way in to work this morning, and have had nothing but good luck having it work for GMRS since! I've gotten local repeaters programmed and am loving this simple small radio thus far!
  8. It is Version 2.30 - I just attempted the update from this post and I am now able to transmit on GMRS frequencies! I should note that at first it did not work, but then I turned the radio off, changed the mode in the V/M menu and now it works fine as far as I can tell! Now to figure out this repeater programming!
  9. I saw something yesterday about somebody saying they make the GMRS-only version, but I don't see that anywhere. However, your memory is correct, that is all there is too it
  10. I don't remember. I will report back tonight when I mess with it a little more, I just didn't have time to check anything last night sadly.
  11. I will check that firmware update out tonight. Hopefully it's some help! Thank you!
  12. I just picked up an anytone at779uv today, and I tried doing what the internet says about going to the menu upon startup with the VM button to select GMRS, however, whenever I try to transmit in a GMRS frequency, it won't allow me to. Any frequency except for a GMRS frequency works though. Do I need to set it up to work on a computer or is there something I'm just failing to understand in this radio?
  13. The “FUN” button does not work for this. I can’t get anything to happen once I’m in the mode selecting for GMRS. I can’t find anything online either
  14. It's a little unfortunate that it will wipe all channels. What I'm not able to figure out though is what button do I push to start up in said mode from this menu. I can find GMRS in the menu, but I don't know how to select it. I'm currently attempting to figure out how to program a repeater into it without using my computer currently. Would be very nice to be able to get at least one repeater dialed in until I can mess with it on my computer at home tonight!
  15. I snuck away from my desk for a second to check it out a little bit more. You were right! I'm just not entirley sure what exactly I did to put it into GMRS mode, not sure which button did the trick lol.
  16. I just picked my AnyTone AT-779UV from an Amazon locker on my way to work. Is this thing for GMRS? Because it looks like everything is preset for regular ham channels. I can still go to a GMRS channel, but I've currently got it stuck in FM radio and about to read the manual, I'm a little unsure how to work it quite yet
  17. Awesome, thank you so much for your help! The anytone at779uv seems like a much better option, for the time being, I will absolutely be getting this one! Thank you for the size comparison, this is a great help! I'm not seeing this listed on CHIRP's website, however. Is it supported with CHIRP, or fairly eas to get programmed? It seems like a pretty straight forward little radio for sure!
  18. Would you be able to elaborate a little more on this? I surely hope you're not saying that when you change the tone for one channel, it applies to all channels! Thank you for the info, I'll absolutely look into these options! I absolutely love the small size, my car is small so I don't want a big bulky radio to take up valuble space in it for now, lol
  19. Welcome aboard! I just got my license on Friday and can say that I've had issues with my first radio so far, but I've learned so much from this community already! This is an amazing resource for GMRS!
  20. I have decided to become more familiar with the manual, as everybody keeps referring me to parts of it to help clear up the confusion. I did also watch a couple videos about the radio by some rubicon guy. Thankfully I got the newer version of the radio with USB C. However, I do still think repeaters are sort of an issue on these units. From everything that I can see, you cannot set an input and output tone to be different, there’s no split tone option on the radio. Which seems like a huge dealbreaker to me. So unfortunately it seems like the issues with repeaters still do persist. Also keeping in mind that it is in fact still shortwave only, unfortunately. I may return the radio and save a few extra bucks to get something a little more expensive and feature full. Thank you for your help!
  21. I do not see 165N in my DCS tones on this little radio, would 65 be the right one for that, do you know? I'm starting to feel like I bought the wrong radio to start out. A lot of people online seem to say it's really awful for repeater use.
  22. I have made sure to be logged into both. I started on the repeater map, and actually had a hard time posting this thread for this reason
  23. I'm looking at many local in Phoenix, Arizona. But in particular, I am looking at SHAWBUTE 725, it appears to be a good choice from my newbie perspective. However, in particular, this one confuses me because it says in the description "USE DCS CODE 165N ON THE ENCODE SIDE OF YOUR RADIO ONLY FOR LINK ACCESS" - which I'm assuming may not apply to me, but I also I'm not entirely sure what that means.
  24. The part that I am having trouble with is finding out what the tone is from the repeater info on this site. I don't seem to see anything about that on there. Would it not be showing that if it's an open system?
