Has anyone bought the NEW Baofeng GRMS UV-5R?
DarrylLicht replied to Tommy2watts's topic in General Discussion
Dammit I lagged that putt! On a more back to topic subject... I'm curious why when Programming the UV-5R GMRS radios with Chirp that the NOAA stations do not appear anywhere in Chirp? Apparently they are hard coded into these HTs? Can anyone confirm? -

I'd go even more basic as lag is not a "radio" specific term and is used in many forms of communication like computer networking A lag is simply a delay in transmission or reception of a communications signal. As we all know whenever a federal entity is involved the lag time increases dramatically! -

RUT ROH -- Just noticed that when I plug my Baofeng UV-5R GRMS radio into Chirp it identifies as a Radioddity UV-5R? Is that expected? Or is this an indication I have a knock-off? -
Good evening mygmrs'ers! With respect to Chirp and the various column settings using the Tremont Ranch Open Repeater as an example, below are the published settings here on mygmrs: Would this be correct settings for that repeater in Chirp?: Do I need a tone squelch or duplex setting here? Some column settings here seem mutually exclusive, meaning fill one out and it blanks others. Learning slowly but surely. Thanks again for all the help past and present gentlemen!

Many online "experts" highly tout the Nagoya NA-771-G as one of the best antennas for GMRS HTs. My new Baofeng UV5R came with this Abbree AR-771 antenna. Is doesn't seem to get any better reception than the shorter rubber duck antenna. Is this AR-771 just trying to capitalize on the Chinese copycat name? Is it garbage as I suspect? I smell a review/comparison coming!

Why is a Roger beep called a roger beep?
DarrylLicht replied to DarrylLicht's topic in General Discussion
Suddenly I find myself worried about balding... -
In the early days of radio communications a "roger" was used to acknowledge a message or question had been received. As in the "roger that" phrase used by law enforcement and military So why is the beep used at the end of TX called a roger beep? Nobody is acknowledging anything, except the broadcaster/transmitter is saying I'm finished. I highly doubt the engineer who developed it was called Roger. LOL Anyone know why its called a roger beep?

Musta been OffRoaderX then as he was active online at that time. I wanted two for camping and hiking with the wife n grandkids. We had an "incident" several years ago in J-tree, (kids went climbing and exploring, we all got separated I found kids and the wife didn't show up for several more hours). Lesson learned and I wanted a way to keep in touch and teach the GKs. Plus I am wanting to start going out on 4x4 group drives and they usually require a GMRS radio (scored a midland MTX275 for the truck). Hell the 2 for the $44 special with all the accessories felt like a cheap investment. Adding the antenna, extended batts, and the programming cable I'm still well under $200 total. I'm no techno-phobe, taught Computer Science, PC repair, data communications, networking, etc for over 20 years. I just might not be as quick to pick up as when i was 20... or 30... or 40! Getting old sucks, but it sure beats the alternative! BUT I WILL PICK THIS UP! Again, I want to thank you all for the wonderful help and support today. Tomorrow I will be in NFL mode, but I'll check in here.
