  1. So NO ONE knows what this does or what it's for?
  2. Randy did a good video about TX from a HAM radio on GMRS frequencies and FCC fines and in a nut shell NO ONE has gotten a fine in the last 14 years for using a HAM radio as a GMRS radio. The FCC just doesn't care. Also, they're not Laws, they're Rules and Regulations. As fare as the UVD1P, it's designed for 136-174MHz and 350-470MHz so there should be zero power loss on GMRS and MURS frequencies. As GMRS folks we should be a bit more relaxed about stuff and not as "legalistic" as all those Sad Hams are about things.
  3. It just seems odd to me that basically the same radio can be advertised as a "HAM" radio and a "GMRS" radio simply because it's locked to that frequency and it has the FCC Stamp of Approval. As long as I only Tx on the frequency I'm licensed for equipment shouldn't matter that much.
  4. The UV9PX is totally different. The display and a lot of other things are nothing like the UVD1P. I know that "some people" have issues with using a "HAM" radio on GMRS and other frequencies but I really doubt I'll end up in Federal Prison for using one in the middle of the desert. Bottom line is I really like the radio and for the price it's hard to beat.
  5. Just picked up a second one. I plan on doing a video in the near future after I've lived with it for a bit talking about the very few negatives I've found, all of which are very minor things. All in all I've very happy with the UVD1P, for a SuperHet, Dual Channel, VHF/UHF radio for $115 it's hard to ask for anything more. I'd love to see Randy do a video on this radio some day. I think he may like it even better than the 805G and 905G that he likes.
  6. While reading though the manual I noticed something called "Dealer Channel Mode" and wonder just what this is for?
  7. From more videos that I've watched the 5/8 Smiley Duck is suppose to be 6db and be equal to the longer Nagoya 771. I ordered one for my UVD1P since the Abbree 771 didn't fit this radio properly.
  8. First, let me say that I'm no NotaRubicon(aka Randy)so please don't judge my videos too harshly. Second, I'm as pleased as a pig in slop with my new KG-UVD1P. It does everything I need it to do and does it simply enough that my brain doesn't hurt after messing with it. Here's a little video I made for my channel.
  9. Just got the UVD1P in and set it up for GMRS/MURS/NOAA and DPS and wow, this is a really nice radio for $115 bucks. UHF/VHF, easy to set up in CHIRP Legacy and it's a SuperHet which is awesome. I think this is my "Goldilocks" radio. It's Just Right. Kind of makes me think about returning the 805G and using the funds to get another UVD1P or maybe I'll just keep the 805G and use it as a loner for people that aren't that radio savvy since it a pretty simple radio to us. Either way if anyone is looking for a nice radio that can be frequency expanded to work with GMRS/MURS and that can pick up NOAA Weather THIS should be high on your list. It's also hard to believe it's a 13+ year old design. Guess that's why it's been around for so long, it's just that awesome.
  10. Let me also add that I'm coming from a musician's point of view with this question. I know that when I use to play electric guitar it could sound loud in the room but the high frequency didn't penetrate walls that well. When I switched to bass it might not sound as loud but the lower frequency could be felt through the entire house. Thanks for the great answers.
  11. Hypothetical question. If you TX a MURS channel at the same 5 Watts you use for a GMRS channel would MURS give you a bit more range since it in the lower VHF range as opposed to the higher UHF range of the GMRS frequency?
  12. Yep, unlike the 805G and 905G which are UHF only the UVD1P is UHF and VHF and you can tweak the Tx/Rx in the software. It's CHIRP Legacy compatible as well so this should work out nicely.
  13. Also just ordered a KG-UVD1P since it looks like it's easy to expand Rx/TX frequencies so I can do GMRS/MURS on it. The KG-905G was only going to be UHF like the 805G I already have so I canceled it for the UVD1P instead.
  14. Just found out this is a UHF only same as the 805G so I canceled my order.
  15. Just like the 805G can be programed in CHIRP Legacy with the 816/818/UVD1P profiles can the KG-935G profile be used for the 905G? If not which profiles might work. Thanks.
  16. I'm sure if I wanted to take the time I could install WINE and Play on Linux and get it working or even go into VirtualBox and spin up a Win10 VM and do stuff from there but I'm just too lazy, LOL. I've been running a Linux Distro of one kind or another since Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I'm running a Debian spin called MX-Linux(23.1)with the KDE Desktop and I absolutely love it. I just upgraded from 19.1 so I could get the latest kernnel and features. Long as I can program the channels into my radio I'm fine if I can get the settings from the radio set. Some radios aren't as user friendly and you really need CHIRP to get the the settings but with the KG-805G there's really not much to set so I'm good.
  17. I noticed that the KG-818 and KG-UVD1P profiles in chirp legacy also work with the KG-805G but none of them give me anything in the Settings Tab. Since Wouxun makes a MURS version of this radio us there anyway to unlock it to do VHF for MURS frequencies and even possibly NOAA?
  18. Because I'm not a maid, I don't do Windows, LOL. Their software only work on that crappy Op System. The CHIRP Legacy Flatpak easily installs on my MX 23.1 Linux System and works well enough to get the job done.
  19. Just got my 805g and used the 816g profile in CHIRP to program some channels and it works fine for that. What it doesn't do is let you see the Settings of the radio. I tried some of the other profiles and found that the KG-818 and KG-UVD1P work as well. Still no Settings though.
  20. True to what was said in another post you CAN program the radio in CHIRP Legacy using the KG-816 listing BUT you don't see any Settings. Not that it's much of an issue since they're are very few settings to actually set. Added the CTCSS tones to the 3 local repeaters and added my DPS/Highway Patrol channels and set them to Rx only. Also, set all the GMRS channels to "skip" so when I scan I'll only get the DPS channels. All in all at first impression I'd say for an $80 dollar GMRS/UHF Only radio that's a SuperHet it's a pretty good deal. Especially if you're looking for something simple that's just for the GMRS channels. P.S. The only negative I can think of by this radio being UHF only is no VHF NOAA Weather Radio.
  21. I don't know how we've gotten so far off topic. I really doubt I'll ever need or use a repeater while dove hunting or shooting in the desert so it's a moot point. I simply wanted to talk about the GMRS Pro and the learning curve it has compared to simpler radios like the V2. Once you get the hang of it it's not too bad though. I do wonder if it has something akin to VFO mode though so I could add a frequency without having to save it into memory.
  22. What if it's an Open Repeated free for everyone to use?
  23. Wouldn't it "bother" anyone who's tuned into the simplex channel just the same as everyone who's tuned into the repeater channel? I honestly don't see what the big deal is. It just seems like an easy, automatic way of letting people know you're finished talking. If I'm talking to someone and others who aren't part of the conversation are listening in and don't like hearing a Roger Beep they're more than free to move to a different channel. No one is forcing them to stay and put up with listening to it. I just think "some people" like making a mountain out of a mole hill.
  24. So why is this an issue on Repeater channels?
  25. I don't think it transmits a RB on repeater channels, just simplex.
