  1. No friends, but some nice folks nearby said they might help me out with the duplexer. I don't have my fingers crossed, but my other plan is to buy a full repeater.
  2. I'll be taking everyone's suggestions and get a dedicated repeater. Any suggestions are appreciated. Yes I watch NotaRubicon on YT, he also mentioned that the Wouxuns worked but he wanted something better. I'm gonna give up on my budget build and splurge on something manufactured for this purpose. Probably gonna end up taking your advice. Got any suggestions for a repeater?
  3. The Btech GMRS Pro has a removable antenna. Btech puts a little bit of glue to accommodate the regulations, but it is easy to remove. I would get a Btech GMRS Pro handheld and a uhf amplifier. The radio has a "parrot repeater" function so you can have a little simplex repeater that will send/receive data, has 20-40 watts of power, and has the antenna height and range you would need.
  4. I have a no brand china duplexer. It is rated at 30 watts and marked as tuned for 467.700 and 462.700. yes, Im aware that the quality of the duplexer is not ideal, but others have had better experience. I am attempting to shield the receiving radio to hopefully lessen the desense, any suggestions?
  5. Not using those radios but that could definitely be the problem. I was going to try shielding the receiver more as I have them pretty close to each other. Any suggestions as to methods?
  6. That narrows it down lol. Yeah I figured I just had something fubbernucked. Time to hyper analyze the whole system . I was also thinking coax. Quick question, if the SWR is acceptable and power loss is minimal; does that rule out the duplexer? Also, should the radios be further apart? I currently have them only 5 feet apart but there is a metal wall barrier between.
  7. Wattage before duplexer is about 24 watts, after duplexer generally around 18 to 20 watts. Using a Btech 20v2 for receive and a Radioditty db-20G for transmit.
  8. Once again I am in need of some assistance. Everyone was very helpful last time so I have faith. I am in the process of building my first repeater for family use. I have the antenna approximately 30ft above surface, and get decent range using simplex on my 25 watt radios. My problem starts when I connect the duplexer to my setup. I am able to receive and transmit properly, but my range has decreased from ~15 miles to less than one mile. The SWR through the duplexer tested at 1.8 which is less than ideal but I wouldn't assume that to cause such a drastic loss. So now I leave it to y'all's expertise, I'm sure I'm missing some information. I am using LMR400 cable about 50ft long. Update: I have disconnected the duplexer and am temporarily running a "parrot" system to test range. As per luck, someone was monitoring my system at that moment. I was able to reach a contact a few miles away and another over 10 miles away using this parrot system. I guess it's time to invest in a new repeater system.
  9. I agree that 650 is probably a good bet. I'll probably end up going through trial and error. I haven't hit the 650 repeater in Pasco/Wesley chapel from home, but at work I do. The way I see it, I am a new repeater. So I'll apologize and yield the channel if I start causing interference. Of course, the ideal scenario would be to not. And yes, the Spring hill 625 repeater is only a handful of miles from my home so I absolutely cannot use that channel. Nice folks on that repeater. As the antenna goes up higher, the signals certainly come through more.
  10. Thanks, I'm pretty sure it's the EXACT same situation over here. New fire department opened up recently a few blocks from my house. I ain't gonna try to cause problems but I am certainly curious.
  11. Decided I'm gonna get 2 Retevis ra87 radios, so much simpler. I'll just keep my Radioditty in my car for now.
  12. I'll be using an external controller, actually experimenting now with some stuff. If it doesn't work out then this will just be my mobile and I'll figure something else out. Also checking out the retevis ra87. Also, 725 is a no-go. Something between is causing interference. I'm not familiar with the sound, something between dial-up noise and a printer printing? Completely constant 24/7, must be lower power or far away.
  13. Yeah I'm pretty much set on building a Radioditty DB-40G repeater. Got a duplexer on the way straight from Chinaland. Already have one of these Radioditty radios and it's quite fantastic.
  14. Late to the party but leaving a warning for all who want to get a Heixen or HYS 20/25 watt handheld. These radios have extremely bad spurious emissions, even when powered off! Experience was kinda horrifying.
  15. I got a Nagoya NMO200c antenna I think it's called, for my car. Put it in my mobile, so far it's been impressing me. I've hit the Tampa 575 repeater from my driveway which is slightly out of the repeater's estimated range. It's pre tuned for gmrs (and MURS, never used it other than to test) swr on a mag mount was 1.01 . I'm starting my repeater project now. Thank you for your help, wish me luck!
  16. Fair nuff, yeah looking back I definitely reacted poorly and I apologize.
  17. Because all I NEED is 15 miles... Sure I could go up 50, 100, 500 ft, but then interference would be worse, and I would have way more coverage than I NEED.... This'll be a family repeater, only need to talk so far. And it's about 3 times the distance I get with HT to HT simplex range.
  18. Because they don't cover the areas I need to have signal in. I am going between hills at a certain angle that my house has signal to the points I need, but not the repeaters. Thank you, glad to hear from somebody nearby that understands the situation. Lots of repeaters in the area, most don't quite hit the areas I need to have signal. I have driven south to see when I hit the 725 repeaters. I've hit the bartow, possibly the perry 725 too, but honestly I must've missed that one on the map lol.
  19. Hello all, probably got a stupid question for y'all to make fun of. I am slightly new still to GMRS. I got my Callsign about 3 months ago now. I have a simple 20' flagpole antenna and get good (~15 miles) simplex range for my needs. I'm trying to figure out how to avoid causing any interference when choosing what channel to set on my new repeater. There's a lot of repeaters within my range and my thoughts were on RP22 or 462.725 . I have not received anything on this channel and on the map the closest repeater to me that's on the same channel is about 50 miles away. I have tried keying up using the ctcss tones and get nothing, which leads me to believe it is out of range. I want to avoid disruption as much as possible out of respect for other GMRS operators. What's a fool proof method of avoiding interference? Obviously I will use "privacy" tones but is there more I can do to keep the air waves clear. I am almost ready to turn on my repeater system, but just wanted to ask this before I do. Edit: Thank you all for your input. I appreciate your experience and support. While this repeater will likely be open to all who draw near its primary purpose will be family communications between Pasco and Hernando Counties.
