  1. I did go back and add the spring as there are some low hanging branches in our neighborhood, but too the pic before adding the spring. Let me see if I can find one. EDIT - went outside and took a couple with spring. Very stable at highway speeds. EDIT 2 - Yes, I know it's a 2M/70CM antenna, but it does work great on GMRS.
  2. Well, here's my $0.02, but it's probably worth about what you're paying for it. I may "upgrade" in the future, but right now I can't get away from the Tid H8. It's a pretty good radio and price point and it just works well. And with a Diamond SRJ77CA antenna I'm getting great transmission and reception. And it works with Chirp.

  4. Lip mount on the rear hatch. Works pretty well.
  5. I also have the Comet CA-2X4SR (PL259 mount) and have been very happy with it.
  6. No, it's a "me" thing. I've had issues in the past where I've had two identical radios and uploaded an image from one to the other and had that one not operate correctly.
  7. Isn't the site and forums two different log-ins?
  8. I have several H8 units and all of them perform just fine. The one thing I don't do is upload a Chirp file from a different H8 radio, even if they are identical. I always download a fresh file from the radio and then copy and paste from another Chirp file. Honestly, I could probably upload Chirp file A to radio B with no issues.
  9. Really good lawyer. That's why their prices are so high.
  10. Well, honestly I'm usually holding a cold beverage in both hands. That way I don't have to get up as often.
  11. Ok, I'm going to throw a little extra fuel on the fire. So if linked repeaters are now illegal, how is this group still in service? https://nggmrs.org/ *Largest GMRS Network in the United States *20+ Area Linked Repeaters
  12. My "ham shack" consists of a chair on my front porch with one GMRS HT radio (locked to GMRS frequencies) and one HAM HT radio (locked to HAM frequencies) and a cold beverage. I can talk on both (which I am properly licensed for) from the same chair.....usually. Might have to get up and move 5 feet for better signal.
  13. Just my $0.02, and probably not worth that. I have a number of BooFwang HT radios. They're nice and perform quite well with the right antenna. I decided to go with Tid Radio (in particular the H8) mainly because the screen shows the channel number, name and frequency. Now the H3 shows the same info, but on a smaller screen. The H8 just feels better to me and works great with a Diamond antenna. While both models of Tid will do GMRS and amateur radio frequencies (if unlocked), I opted to keep the frequencies separate and have one GMRS H8 and one amateur radio H8 (with frequency specific antennas) and each are doing a great job.
  14. Not at all. I’m one of those who “studied” for the test. Been licensed a whopping 3 month. But in my defense I took the practice tests before actually “studying” and passed with a 90% average. All I’m saying is it shouldn’t be a memorization test. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  15. Take the "peer group" out of the equation. You pick up a "study guide" that has the actual test questions and read at your leisure. That's not studying, that's memorizing. When I took all my CompTIA, Micro$oft and Cisco certifications, you had to know the material. The study questions were just that, to study. They weren't actual test questions. You had to know the material in order to pass the exam. Just my $0.02.
  16. I have the H3 and H8 and prefer the H8 for its size. I actually used the H8 as a mobile unit with a Comet antenna for a few weeks until my mobile unit arrived. It's still my go-to HT. And I like that if you're in channel mode, you get the channel number, name and frequency all on the same screen.
  17. Well, the group I mentioned is a "pay-to-play" group. Maybe that's why?
  18. Did linking ever really "go away"? I mean, there's a large GMRS group in the southeast US and all of their repeaters are linked.

    Very new to radio

Some of those radios (with decent antennas and location) are working just fine for repeaters 20-65 miles away. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. I think I'd have to use an HT with air band just to listen in. LOL
  21. I'm using that same cable on Baofeng (2 models), TID Radio (2 models) and an Explorer QRZ-1. Works just fine.

  23. Yes!!! I started using Linux Mint years ago and really like it.
  24. I love this line: "Please don't wait for the next disaster to be left in the dark without communication or information. Don't think you can rely on your neighbor in an emergency because they may have evacuated, been injured, or suffered worse."
  25. Excellent, thanks. I have a TID H8 in GMRS mode that I've programmed with the local GMRS repeaters and started showing my wife how to use it.
